The Movie Thread...

I went and saw a star war... and liked it!

A lot better than Force Awakens. Some really great call backs to previous SW movies, but not a nostalgic movie by any means. The only part that's missing that just seems wrong is the lack of the 20th Century Fox fanfare in the beginning. In my mind, that was as much a part of Star Wars as the opening John Williams chords!

Go give Disney your money!

I agree wholeheartedly! Not just once, though. See it at least twice!

I saw it. You'll get no spoilers from me... Get yer butts to the theater. :p

Got my tickets for Monday evening Can't wait.

The Last Jedi: I will wait until more people see it before I tear it apart.

In the meanwhile, I will go to see it again this week. Not because I missed anything in the story, because of it's visual intensity.

Yes... Don't be like the knucklehead on the Wall Street Journal site! I was reading about the tax overhaul, and in the middle of the comments section, some bonehead posted a string of Star Wars spoilers.

Ha, just kidding...

John Wick, the first one. Just picked up the Blue Ray at Frys electronics for $10.
This was one of those movies I watched without reading any reviews or pre release hype. Liked it so much that I’ve added it to my movie collection. Sits right next to my Blues Brothers and Nacho Libre DVDs :geek:

The Club Scene is of one of the /my best action , music, choreography, cinematically near perfect action scene/ sequence.

The second John Wick movie is good too.
.
On Netflix...

Godless is a great dark Western with good actors.
The Punisher is good comic book action, lots of violence. Doesn't get going until the end of the first episode tho.

John Wick Trivia: The Band playing on Stage in The 2nd Movie at the "Coronation" is the real band the Created and Performed all the music / soundtrack in the movies (Both) :)

EDIT: So that Club Scene in the 1st movie was their music created to go with the action.

Like the JW2 as well, liked it better the second time...

Watched Coco, it was nice. Not Toy Story 3 sort of good, but waaaay above Cars.
Probably around Up's mid-pack ranking in the Pixar pantheon.

I want to see The Post something bad... maybe next week. Darkest Hour looks good as well. I <3 Gary Oldman

Grown up movie season has arrived!

+1 on The Post. Meryl Streep, meh. But Tom Hanks hasn't made a bad movie yet that I know of.

So what are you thoughts a week into it...? I saw it twice, and loved it, every minute. Except I think they should have had _____ be the pilot in that one scene where the ______ went _____ into the _____.

I gots to say....I was truly underwhelmed. Maybe it's been too long since the last one. Maybe I'm just not attuned to the nuances. I was a Star Wars fanatic on the first three movies (1977-1980's - what teenager wasn't?). The second trilogy was pretty good. But the acting on this one was typical Star Wars (wooden, predictable, stilted, very hard to achieve WSOD, and not up to par as far as I was concerned). It just didn't have the wow factor in the story, although the CGI was pretty good. Maybe I've just become jaded in my old age...which would be a pity, because I love a well-made sci-fi flick. To me, this just wasn't that. :( But at least it was better than "Final Countdown" or "Plan 9 From Outer Space."

(As an aside...this isn't actually Science Fiction. It's Fantasy. Totally different genre, although these days they want you to treat them as one and the same.)

I saw it, it was okay, but that was all. I was truly hoping for better.

I really loved it. Much more that TFA, which I thought was too convoluted and flighty. So we'll have to agree to disagree!

Space Opera, FTW!!!!

BTW, for a REALLY great SF fictional universe, PLEASE check out the Expanse books by James S.A. Corey. They are PERFECT! The TV show is also REALLY good, called The Expanse.
Hard SF, mixed with space opera themes, coupled with cosmic dread... damn fine mix!!!

I hear where you are coming from...40 years later I’m still a SW nut.

To me this installment still had that SW feel...albeit you can tell they are trying to wrap up the original storyline.

There were a few characters and a few scenes I could have done without....but otherwise it did what it was supposed to to...it lived the story forward and kept me entertained.

I still think but was better than The Force Awakens....but Rogue One has been the best of the 3 new SW flicks.

I look forward to seeing how they close this chapter in the next episode. We also are getting to that point where we should be seeing the trailer for the Solo: A Star Wars Story

Agreed - Rogue One rocked!! Maybe that was because it was outside the SW storyline.

But does it stack up against Heinlein? Asimov? :p

Heinlein, definitely. Asimov... meh.
Foundation this, law of robo that, Mule said what?

First 3 books of Expanse...Most Excellent... But careful there stacking Corey with Heinlein just yet..that's hallowed SF ground..

I am a sucker for Hard SF especially when social political aspect.

We could start a whole thread on that but guess that goes in the "I read a book" thread.

I hear you on that... Heinlein is the best (although I couldn't really grok SIASL)! But those Expanse books... they rock my world. I'm signed up to get first read of Persepolis... hopefully any day now! The way Corey mixes in so many different genres, and makes it all work... wow! I hope they are able to continue in the universe and not dilute it. Cibola is the only one I didn't really like, but it had some pieces that added to the continuity.
