The Movie Thread...

You better see it soon it won't be on the biggest screen long. Length of film a little longer than most and for me the it made sense as it is a journey and it's part of the tension building. Longer movies as long as they are good don't bother me, so I may not be the best judge.
I can't make it down for that... such a great theater though!
Glad to hear it's not long just for the sake of being long. I like slow burn movies (like the original!).

Just saw this evening, loved it! How did K learn to go to Vegas though? That's the only thing I didn't catch.

K had the wooden toy horse analyzed. That's where they found traces of radiation, a certain type I believe, that led him to Las Vegas. :geek:

Yeah, by the Somali guy, 10-4, I remember now!!! I couldn't remember that plot point last night.
Nice set up for a next movie BTW. Not sure I like that, but it was definitely telegraphed...

Amazing read on Blade Runner(s), especially for those of us that are drawn in.

For those of you that aren't it might explain why it resonates so much and/or why it is relevant, and it's influences.

Like the movies It is a bit of a long read but Alas... Not all good things come in 140 characters or less.

I haven't read it yet, but did really enjoy the movie. Unlike some of the reviews I read, I wasn't hoping for it to be edited down. I would have liked more screen time for Dave Bautista's character (can he do nothing wrong? GREAT actor), and less of Leto's (his star is not rising).

Possible spoilers...

Only plot holes I thought about and therefore wish weren't there were a) why did they bury the bones instead of destroying them? That was what gave them up. b) why didn't K think about the fact that his spinner would have some sort of GPS in it and would be easily tracked? Derp.

Going to see Princess Bride tonight in the theatre :)

Living out in the sticks like we do Cathy and I have been signed up for Netflix for years. Cathy is the voratious readers. Me, I'm the books on tape guy. With no kids and day light savings out the window, long dark evenings are often filled with movie watching.

With winter coming on and short days ahead, the Movie Thread.

Last night we watched, what I would call a "sleeper" titled Black Sea.

Starring Jude Law it's about a modern day submarine captain with a rag tag crew that was comissioned to go after a Nazi U-Boat with millions of dollars in gold bars on it to fund the war shipwrecked out in the Black Sea. The crew's greed forces the plans to go very wrong!

I wasn't really sure what to expect, but I have always liked Jude Law. It was gripping and intense and a much better movie than expected!
Never even heard of it. Decent Naval movies get my attention...guess my sea time plays into that.

Most accurate movie of life at sea I have seen yet: Down Periscope! Nailed it!

"Run Silent, Run Deep." One of the best ever.
Nah, way off the mark. Gotta see Das Boot.

"Crimson Tide." Pretty darn good. And thought provoking.
I'm not sure if I have seen that since my seagoing days. I'll have to watch it again to see how it feels.

Good movie regardless.

"The Final Countdown." One of the worst.
My wife loves that movie :)

But I won't argue with you...

Just pure wish fulfillment I think there's room for a very interesting movie between the first Blade Runner and 2049 and in that movie Bautista would be a central character

Inconceivable!!

In searching for Blade Runner I came across Blade Runner: The Final Cut. It came out in 2007. Is it tied to the first one?

Funnily enough... I watched this last night... It is supposedly the version Ridley Scott put together to be the "definitive" version...
There are several sites that compare all the different cuts/edits (some of which are more substantial than others)
I have to say, (surprisingly) I prefer the (original/) U.S. Theatrical version (also the most widely available)
My 2 cents? Watch the US Theatrical cut, then watch the Final Cut (if you want)

Saw Das Boot at the Newport Big Screen, what a great movie. The definitive silent service movie. Here's a great book on Cold War submariners: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1610393589/?tag=imtbtrails-20

The Director's Cut and the Final Cut of BR are pretty similar. Final is re-mastered so it looks better. Not many other differences. I would recommend not watching the theatrical cut. Nothing wrong with it, but the voice-over takes you out of the moodiness and the final add on scene from The Shining (literally) doesn't add to it, all though narratiely correct if you consider the new movie.

No Dave Bautista, but here's a really good anime that shows a little of those between years. Done by the guy who did Cowboy Beebop if that means anything to you.

Will need to check the Anime...

Sigh.. I have no less than 5 cuts of BR on Blu-ray and HD DVD collectors edition ... Unopened.... Really

Regarding Das Boot I also saw it in the theater I also believe at Newport.. I have a slight issue with claustrophobia and I came out if that movie sore in the neck and shoulders as it was so cramped and stressful truly a Excellent movie.

I think I was sitting next to you!!! It's a hassle to go out there, so we only make the trip for really special films... Das Boot was one of them!
Tells you how great that movie was. Did you know how it was filmed in a u-boat mock up, so that all the cast and crew would share the claustrophobic feel while filming? Really cool story, and great result!

I might check this out from redbox
My wife LOVES this movie. I liked the music a lot, but there were some plot points I didn't care for.
It got a little too Edgar Wright-ey at the end, and the actual ending was too implausible. I never read, but that seemed like the studio tacked it on?

.
American Made is OK also. Just seemed like TC doing a matthew mcconaughey impersonation.

Might go see that this weekend... heard it was pretty good, as TC playing MMc is better than TC playing TC.

Speaking of Amazon special delivery service, just watched American Made this weekend... gets two thumbs up.
Cruise dialed back the crazy, and played up the every-man aspect. When he does that, he's a good actor.
Casting of a couple other characters was a bit off IMHO, but it was fine.
