The Movie Thread...

I’ve read the entire series three times, and I did not recognize anything in the Apple version.

Bottom line: It usually turns out badly when movies are made from books longer than, say, 90 pages. Beyond that, though:

Marvel: Good effects. Story irrelevant.

The Stand: Done once very well, I have the DVD. Stars Gary Sinise et al. I hear there's another one.

I, Robot: Somewhat close to the book. Done well.

Dune: Strike three. Give it up already.

There are others. Mostly forgettable.

I thought Dune Pt. 1 was really good. Better than the overly long book, which I have read twice (once when I was 12 and recently about a month before the movie came out).
I thought they did a great job with the movie ... with a few minor exceptions. It is a very difficult book to bring to the screen.

Yeah it was terrible. I guess the lead guy is a popular hearthrob with the younger kids:speechless:

Watched it with the the kids, and we all liked it. Looking forward to part II. Totally better than Lynch's Twin Peaks fever dream version. It wasn't particularly memorable, but it was fine in the moment. Probably because we watched on HBO... it would be better in the theater. Cast was great, minus dreamy Paul. Harkonnen invasion scenes were pretty kick ass IMO. I'd be tempted to spend US American money to watch part II in the theater (on $5 day).

Speaking of which, going to see The Cabinet of Dr. Strange's Infinite Madness tomorrow and we're looking forward to that! Doc was weak-sauce in Spidey III... totally out of character to do an spell of that potential as a NBD thing to make a kid happy. I look forward to seeing Dark Doc from the What If stories in this (fingers crossed that's what is implied).

Aaaaand, it's a good one! Not perfect, and a few "Wait a minute..." plot points/holes, but perfectly serviceable distraction from life's travails. If you like Marvel, you'll like it! I think WandaVision and What If? are mandatory viewing to really be immersed in it, but if you're that kind of a person, you've already watched those anyway.

Top Gun Maverick tonight. Fun movie, but very lazy script writing IMO.

It felt very, very familiar: fly through this trench, avoid the canons, hit a target that's 3 meters wide, "Don't think. Just do." (Use the Force, Rooster) It really was an earth-bound version of the original Star Wars (aka Episode IV I believe). There was even a "stay on target" line during training. I laughed out loud.

They took no risks with the audience. I'll leave it at that.

The flying sequences were stupendous - and we really got a glimpse into the physical exertion necessary to pilot an F-18 (or vintage F-14) in these extraordinary maneuvers.

It's all about the flying - so go see it in IMAX.

The Chekhov’s gun that was placed early in the movie was sort of an internal spoiler alert.

It’s like they weren’t even trying to pretend that they werent doing Star Wars. Han Solo & everything.

But I went in expecting a superhero movie, and that’s what we got. Nowadays every movie is a superhero movie. I have many thoughts, all of them spoilerish. Then again, there isn’t much to spoil.

The wife said there was not nearly enough volleyball. I think she was expecting a shot-for-shot remake.

I couldn’t get around why Maverick hadn’t retired 15 years earlier and made bank as an aerospace exec. He could at least have flown for Southwest like “Hoot” Gibson did after retiring as a Shuttle Commander. He isn’t buying that P-51 on O-6 pay.

Props for showing the ROC flag.

LockMart got the product placement, but the actual flying was in Boeing aircraft. Have to assume the Navy wasn’t up to letting the movie crew bend its precious few F-35s.

I saw the prominently displayed Lockheed Martin logo on the stick of the super, super, super, super (+ 6 more) sonic plane/rocket thing at the beginning. I had to laugh at the product placement - like we're going to go out and buy one!

There was NO volleyball.
Spoiler alert!

My sister in law watched the original with her daughter who starts for her HS varsity team. They were appalled at the low quality of the volleyball.

im still trying to figure out how the bartender owns a beachfront house, 40 foot yacht, and a classic 911. So many questions.

“great shot kid, that was one in a million.”

Not that I ever watch movies anymore, but this was a total buzz kill for me on the first rumor of a new movie.

I thought to myself...how long has his career been? LT in 1986? Assuming he was already in for four years to make LT, 4 years of academy, that would put Maverick my fathers age. 60 year old fighter pilot?

You are already old when you are 40 in the military. I could have retired at 38 if I stuck it out.
