The Automobile Thread

Speaking of the dealers. Already had our financing approved though our bank, and they found the car I want at a dealer in Tustin. Ok, cool. Jim from the dealership calls, and asks for info to “ hold the vehicle”. Says it’s standard procedure. Fair enough, so fill out the form. Now I feel dumb for not asking questions because wife and I get notified that our credit score has dropped from hard inquiries initiated from the dealership. We were not told of a credit check and, were not applying for financing from these people, so basically they ran our credit without authorization. Should have been a soft inquiry at most.
He already knew we had financing arranged from our bank yet still went ahead and ran our credit. Unprofessional, and pretty sure it’s illegal.

I'd report that to the management of the dealership. Sounds like good bargaining power to get the price of the car dropped.

Sounds like your bank found the car for you and referred the dealer. The dealer is trying to cut them out of the picture, even though you'd not have gone there had it nor been for your bank. I'd let the rep at the bank you work with know, this is unethical at best.
Also have them remove the check as it was unauthorized, you can also put in a report to the credit agency's. Dealers....I've been to great ones, and sleazy ones. Unfortunately I go loaded for bear when buying and although try to be pleasant the a-hole crimes out in me quick and brutal.

Yah, my wife contacted our bank rep alreadys as well asking what the heck is going on.

I received a set of license plates in the mail a few days ago for someone that doesn't and has never lived at my place. I've received mail for this person sporadically over the years, from car dealers, collection agencies, medical info etc. Even a lawyer looking to sue them, who I returned quite a bit of it to with a note listing the crap I've received. It's now that I just toss mail in the bin and don't even look or return it anymore. However, As I now have a set of new license plates and I'm guessing a registration that goes with it I'm thinking...hehehe....
Most likely send it/take it back to the DMV ( not the dealer) with "Deceased" written on it  to satisfy my passive aggressive behavior. Or maybe toss them in the trash...or.....not decided yet.

What would you do with the new car plates for someone that uses your address who has never lived at your home and you do not know?

At the very least keeping/discarding/destroying the plates will probably cost someone $25 and a month of waiting for replacements. I don't know what would happen RTSing them with "deceased" on the outside. What kind of postage/permit imprint is on it? If it's presorted First Class, then there's no return service on it unless it says there is.

It's weird that someone would use the wrong address for something important like that. (Edit: not entirely surprising though. At work we get returned paychecks because people don't update their mailing addresses. Some of them are among a group of holdouts that refuse to use direct deposit, but I digress.)

I went back to Ontario Hyundai today and wrote a check to the finance guy who tried to be a piece of Sh!t, but I flushed him down. All he said in response was, “you’re right; let me draft new papers.”

I thought people with 500 credit scores are supposed to get freebies and handouts without having to argue.

F&I is where they make the $$$! I've only bought from a dealer once (Cerritos) and the F&I guy was awful.
Rest of the experience was great though.

I'll exercise common sense and just go around them. Or wait.
Tell me you don't ride without telling me you don't ride.

When I'm crossing an intersection and a vehicle pulls up in haste to the right turn lane in front and perpendicular to me, I prefer not to stop in the middle of the intersection

Some of us put in some serious mileage. Some of us ride a motorcycle, and also prefer not to stop in the middle of the intersection

More than a few years ago I went with my SIL to Longo Toyota to buy her first car, just to make sure she didn't get taken advantage of.
She found the car she wanted and off we went to the sales office. I wrote down the price I thought was fair on a piece of paper, folded it and put it in her purse, without her seeing the price.
I didn't have to get involved because she was handling the negotiations well. Then again I was giving the salesman a pretty good staredown.
After a few lines from the salesman, SIL just told him he has one time to get the best price from his master, now go get it. He came back with the price, which she was willing to pay.
Off he went for the paperwork.
While he was out I told her to look at what I wrote on the paper. She did and the look on her face was worth the time. It was within $50 of what she paid.

Update: Ok, so talked to our bank, and found out it standard procedure with outside financing to remove the vehicle from the market and show proof there is a real buyer. Also, apparently we pick up the vehicle from the dealership and then finalize with the bank over the next 5 days, so the credit check allows us to drive the vehicle from the dealership. So, everything was legit. Wish the bank or the sales rep would have explained it a bit better beforehand rather than after though.

I am an outside financier. I wish I was able to put an entire down payment on my credit card and get cash back for it. Unfortunately, my name is not on the loan documents, so the funds can’t come from me…unless it’s cash…then money talks and swears.

On another note,... anyone notice there is a slow transition to big block style letters for the model name on the rear center of the vehicle? Toyota is doing it, VW is doing it, Nissan new models... Hyundai new models...

No more squinting and looking at the bottom left corner to see what that car is I guess....

You mean like this……

If I can't see the driver's face, I will ride around the back of the vehicle waiting to turn right. Every time. Or if I haven't started across, I won't start.

I've probably got fewer road miles than you, but still well over 12,000 on the bicycle. Close to 50,000 on motorcycles.

I haven't been hit yet. We won't talk about my idiot move in high school.

I thought that's what it sounded like, but didn't want to prematurely jump to the defense of a potentially shady dealer. But yeah, it's called an option contract. We also do that for people paying "cash" for a car, so that they can take the car the same day. He for sure should have told you what was happening though.

When I’m towing a trailer with kids or groceries, there’s no room to ride behind said vehicle and get back onto the sidewalk. Sharp turns are impossible, and step-ups onto curbs are not simple.

I'm coming through on a bicycle, so you better move and occasionally bow down if you're driving.
