New Bike Day!

Rock Shox stuff is easier to service in my limited experience. My 2018 Pike on the Hightower gave me fits for a long time. Installed a 150 air shaft before ever riding it but always struggled with a decent setup and never used more than 135 ish. Along came the 2019 debonair whatever airshafts that are all hollowed out and provide a bit larger negative air chamber so I bought one and installed a new set of the green SKF seals. Instant improvement with smaller bumps. Finally removed the remaining puck and kept reducing air pressure till I used full travel. I’ve finally settled on a magic setup that’s running drastically lower air pressure than recommend and might even run a more fluffy fork than @Mikie. I think the SKF green seals are the real magic.
Of which I told @Voodoo Tom about a year ago lose the puck and drop the air pressure...
...and nothing is fluffier than Fluffy! :whistling:

New to me Santa Cruz Hightower CC. Medium. 150/135. So, I’ve been looking for a new used bike to replace my Nomad. A brand new bike wasn’t in the cards, bookoo dolloro’s. I came across this beautiful Sriracha Red Hightower on Craigslist. That was priced just where my budget was. A few texts and calls, a few days later I was loading her up. OC Bike Garage thank you fir the sweet ride!!!!!! This bike is stupid clean! As close to brand new as can be. Still has the original chain and cassette with lots of life left. It came with two sets of wheels, 29 & 27.5+. This thing is freakishly clean. And, I’m stoked on the deal I got!
Once it was loaded up, I drove straight to San Juan Trail. Changed out the grips, adjusted saddle height and position, levers , etc. I didn’t even set/check sag. I just set the pressures to my Nomad settings. Same with tires, Nomad settings. After some fiddling, we blasted off for cocktail rock. I gotta say, immediately I felt right at home. Very similar cockpit feel/setup to my Nomad. The bottom switchbacks were gravy. All the small chatter was smoothed out making the punchy tech sections feel buttery smooth. I stopped at least 6 times to play with the saddle height and lever/shifter position. About 1/2 way up the Reverb started sagging and by the end of the ride wouldn’t fully extend. Got to cocktail rock with a big grin on my face and my quickest time yet by a few minutes. A quick break and threw on my jacket for the always challenging run back down to the car. OHHHHH YEAHHHHH! She likes to open it up. Didn’t really push it & still managed to PR the downhill. I’m really impressed with how well this bike turned in the tight switchbacks. Everything felt effortless. Like it just wants to roll over everything. Crazy how much more than my Nomad. Overall I am very pleased with the first ride initial setup. This bike is only going to get better the more I get it dialed in. Lots of options of what I can do. But, for now I’ll just ride it.
What do I get for becoming one of the Hightower cool guys?:whistling:

You don’t have to own a Hightower to be one of the cool guys, but a 29er helps. :sneaky::D

JK...you’re in if you like your bike and ride it. So it sounds like you are way in! Point Redman

My buddy bought almost the same bike from OC Bike Garage a few months ago for a good price. The same model and color and pretty much the same build and in the almost new condition like yours. I had to take a double take to see if maybe he dropped it back off to sell but the tires are different. Congrats on the new ride!

Looks good......congrats. I found my HT just wants to run.....fast. Big wheels eat up the chunk.

The color suits you.

The Reverb just needs a servicing.....or perhaps just check the air pressure.

And yeah.....it's gets better.

Not a huge Fox fan. I finally figured out how to get my 36 almost as plush as my Marzocchi 350. The latest couple of Lyrics I demo'd were better than any Fox I demo'd (for my tastes). The Pike that was on the Tracer I demo'd for three days was also better than any Fox I demo'd. Not saying Fox are worse than RS, just that the RS were better for me on demo rides. Can't speak to longevity, serviceability or any such thing. The only Rock Shox I've owned (other than the Mag 20 in 1990) was a 2013 Boxxer WC air. It sucked.

Buddy in our group, who is 65 and refuses to try new things, swears by Marzocci's forks due to his past life. He finally bought a new bike two weeks again ,a 2020 Bronson and installed a Lyrik with the Push ACS coils. He **RAVED** about it and said after his maiden voyage "I never thought I'd find something better than Marzocci"...

Good laugh for you hard core guys. My daughter asked me to build a bike for one of her friends, then changed her mind. So, this is my new mountain bike (for one ride). Had a surprising amount of fun at O'Neill on it. View attachment 60605
I haven’t seen a Jones XR since my Gary Fisher Cake days! That bike is so pretty! You should show up on that thing and make a few passes to rub it in, haha! I would...if I had time to ride.

I have a “modern” Klunker and it is fun to take it out in the hills. I wish it had a fork sometimes but the 2.8 tires soak up a lot of the bumps. A lot of times the more simple it is the funner it will be.
