deadly violence from citizen to citizen using firearms.
We are quick to pass and accept laws outlawing toys or other products that have a very slight chance of injuring or killing, but God help us if we try to do something about mass shootings other than focus on "mental illness" or fortification of potential targets.

And your solution to this problem ?

I understand your fear. I do not have a fear of being collateral damage, I can protect myself.

I did forget another stat:

In 2020, 620,327 LEGAL induced abortions were reported to CDC from 49 reporting areas.

What do you thing about this collateral damage, or are you concerned about your own well being?

How about this one:
Up to 440,000 deaths each year can be attributed to medical errors, injuries, accidents, and infections, according to the Journal of Patient Safety. That's more than 1,200 fatalities every day.

No fear here…..and it’s not about protecting myself. just pointing out how the stats you posted don’t always equate. A lot for he stats you posted are positions people put them selves personally in.
Yess, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, copd medical accidents and such are not anything that can affect me day to day….that’s why it’s not an apples to apples compares.

As someone who did 31 years in law enforcement, I can tell you there is no realistic solution at this point. As evidenced by our prison populations, it's clear that passing laws doesn't work to deter people from crime. It would be a good start to start strictly enforcing the laws we do have.

If I was king there would be set punishment for each crime, no plea deals. Like going into a resturant, you have a menu (the crime) and you have the price you're going to pay (the punishment) for felony crimes, when you get caught.

See your apples to apples below:

Overview. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), there were 216,366 traffic accidents in the state in 2022, which resulted in 3,854 fatalities and 165,978 injuries.

Gun deaths in California 3,576
(This includes suicide which is ~60% of gun deaths)
CDC website

Californians are about 25% less likely than citizens of other states to die in a mass shooting.
California OAG website

So you have a higher chance to die driving your car than being killed by a gun, so are you going to stop driving your car ?

And your solution to this problem ?
I'd consider doing something radical and looking at implementing what every other country in the world I've lived in did after experiencing a mass shooting, gun control. Did it completely stop the problem? No, obviously it didn't. But it did drop to the point any such tragic occurrence is extremely rare. Not daily like it does here.
What do we have here in comparison? A country where the leading cause of death for a child is by a gun. As far as I'm aware this is the only country in the world where this happens. Certainly within its peer group its the only place this occurs.

I'm not anti-gun, in fact I'm very far from it. What I am anti is the almost unfettered access people in this country have to guns.

This country needs appropriate gun control and guess what, a vast majority of the population support it. So why isn't it being implemented?

To quote one of my favorite comedians Jim Jefferies "I agree with you, if you're a responsible gun owner and you don't F@ck around with them then you should be allowed your guns, you really should. But thats not how society works, we have to play to the 1% that are such fuckwits they ruin it for the rest of us"
Caution, the language is very Australian, definitely NSFW :D

The priorities are all messed up.

Number of deaths for leading causes of death:
Heart disease: 695,547
Cancer: 605,213
COVID-19: 416,893
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 224,935
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 162,890
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 142,342
Alzheimer’s disease: 119,399
Diabetes: 103,294
Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis: 56,585
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 54,358
CDC website

Firearm deaths include all deaths involving guns, such as homicide, suicide, and accidents. More people in the US die from suicide involving a firearm than homicides or accidents.
In 2021, there were a total of 48,830 firearm deaths.
USA Facts website.

Edit
In every state, it’s illegal to drive drunk, yet one person was killed in a drunk-driving crash every 39 minutes in the United States in 2021.

you forgot to break the data down by handgun, long rifle, shot gun, assault rifle (undefined but define it anyway you want).
you also forgot the biggest killer in America each year. So many it takes at least 3 years to count. The most deaths occur in California, the greatest death camp on earth. The under reported number i1 1,000,000 per year. 2740 a day, 114 per hour, and 2 per minute.
Welcome to California the greatest show on earth unless y0u are one of those unlucky 422 per day

I see that statistic brought up a lot, but it needs to come with context. The majority of those deaths are “children” 15-19 years old. 70% is by homicide and the other 30% is suicide. Of the homicides, the majority of them are gang on gang violence by teenagers. Is gang violence and teenage suicide a problem, absolutely but It’s not like innocent kids are getting gunned down walking down the street in large numbers. We have a crime problem and a mental health problem. “Gun control” however you define that isn’t going to fix that. The criminals aren’t going to turn in their guns and there are already millions of guns in circulation.

Most likely over 300 million guns out there and that doesn't count the "ghost guns" and "80% completes".

@Lost Kiwi Whether you agree with the premise or not, the foundation of this country included the 2nd Amendment so I don't EVER see the required number of states ratifying the removal of the Amendment. Even if they did, I can't even imagine the imagine the percentage of firearms that would NOT be turned in by otherwise law abiding citizens....and I can't say I blame them. Taking away the right to own firearms because .00001% of the population are a problem isn't going to go over well.

What would you suggest?
How can you control an inanimate object, a gun ?

You can't compare other contries "gun control" to America. We are a Constutional Republic, which gives us the unalienable right to keep and bare arms, a freedom.

Nothing good ever comes from guns. Like I said earlier, this country has too much freedom. Kiwi is right, get rid of the guns and you'll get rid of the problems associated with them.

Thank goodness our independence didn't come from guns.
Thank goodness the abolishment of slavery didn't come from guns.
Thank goodness your safety by LEO didn't come from guns.
Thank goodness your freedom didn't come from guns.
Thank goodness. . . need we continue ?

How much freedom is too much ?

And the problems associated with guns, if eliminated, would still be problems and just move to another item.... like cars, knives baseball bats, bows and arrows, sticks and stones ? ?

Somehow, I think uvalde, or sandy hook May have played out slightly different with a bow and arrow or knife….
Just a hunch

In that case, the Earth needs to get rid of people all together.

All of those things were horrible killing events. Man killing man. Is that what freedom is worth? I think not. You don't see lions shooting lions. You don't see frogs shooting frogs. You don't bison shooting bison. And you certainly don't see any of those animals shooting each other. But man shoots all of those and each other. What's wrong with that picture??? HELLO?!!!

Stop the guns and you'll stop the killing.

I'm not advocating taking away the right to own firearms at all, I'm advocating for gun control.

What does gun control look like?

Well in NZ these days I can still own a gun if I want to. Sure I can't walk into Walmart and buy one over the counter but I can still get my hands on one if I want to. Now granted the process is a touch arduous for a generation that expects immediate gratification. But in my humble opinion being responsible for owning something that has the ability to kill or maim others en masse (like say a motor vehicle) should come with some checks that you are appropriately capable of handling such a responsibility (like say a drivers license and car insurance).

Whats the process look like to own a gun in NZ?

Well first I have to buy the learners manual. Once I've studied that and learnt it I sit a test. After that I need to buy approved secure equipment to store my guns and ammunition in (they need to be kept separately). Finally the police come and review my secure storage and interview me to make sure I am of sound mind. After all that I have a gun license and I am able to purchase a gun. What guns I can purchase depend on my license. I can't have an assault rifle or anything larger than a certain magazine size. Hand guns face higher license requirements and more scrutiny etc etc.
Going from a hazy memory here (its been a while) but my license only lasts for a certain period of time and then I have to renew to keep it valid.
If I'm caught doing something stupid with my gun then the penalty is severe and I will lose my license and have my gun taken off me.

Now I get the argument that always crops up. What about the criminals and illegal guns? Well, sure, I can buy a gun in NZ on the black market without a license but guess what? Those guns are feckin expensive. Like $20k or more. The people buying them are not your common street thug, more like your organized criminal type (mafia, bikie gang etc) and they have a tendency to use those guns to take each other out, not run amok in -insert public place filled with innocent bystanders here -. The very same thing happened in Australia after they introduced gun control following Port Arthur. Same again in the UK.

I'm well aware of the 2nd Amendment having just spent a week in Tennessee (were I was quite impressed not to get myself shot :D) but come on, if you can't change something called an amendment what can you change? Its been done in the past so why can't it be done again?

In The News!!!! THIS JUST IN!!!

Danimal just bought a pair of bike shorts on eBay. While he says he has had less than stellar luck on that site, he did mentioned the seller says they are New In Bag, and if the pic is to be believed it could be true. He was looking for a pair of "shorts" that will work with the Mtb and gravel bikes.
Danimals go to short, which he says he really likes, is made to be able to use Knee pads so they are too baggie and has caught on the bike accessories a couple times which he mentioned was little disconcerting. So he said he was looking for a pair of "baggies" that are on the slim leg side but still has zipper pockets for "stuff". He declined to specify what "stuff" was. We asked if it's some kind of safety gear or just a phone, but he didn't elude to one or the other. Danimal will see if the seller is legit, and if the Giro Ride shorts live up to the video he watched online. Stay tuned, we will ( we might) post updates as the story evolves.

I wanna see photos of Danimal cheeks in said shorts! There's a thread for that linked 8 posts above!
