I DIDN'T Ride My Bike Today, Cuzz....

And he would not have enjoyed the downhill. I was fine going up, and had plenty of gas to pick up the pace the last couple miles. I even had a nice chat with a German hiker just below the peak. My kid asked me how I could carry a conversation in German with no oxygen. He tried to jump in and managed about 6 words. :p

Coming down was another painful story. Every step hurt... And the last mile of switchbacks (1 mile/1,000 feet) were torture.

did you come down Vivian creek trail and end up in the middle of forest falls? love that area... now if only they let you mtb down San G...

Yep... We started from the Forest Falls parking lot and did the Vivan Creek Trail as an out and back to the peak. About 19 miles round trip. That was my first time, but probably won't be the last...

I had a last minute request to work today.....I really do hate working Saturdays. I got stuck in Riverside for just enough time to jack up my ride schedule today. By the time I got home, it was too warm to head out. Now that i have waited for it to cool down....if I go out, I won't have enough time to recover before I head out at O-Dark:30 tomorrow.

Did I tell you I really hate working on Saturdays.

Next time hit up Sycamore Cyn while you were in the area! Some fun loops in there if you're already this far out. Heat though, that could be the deal breaker...

Didn't ride the pedaler this weekend, instead went up to Kennedy Meadows on the dirt slinger. Did an epic ride with a few friends. One crashed out early broke a bone in his wrist. Got him back to camp then restarted. 125 miles half single-track. Schaeffer to Cedar to Rincon into Kernville for pizza then up the highway back to camp. Thought about Burt while gravity drug use down Cedar. That trail is gnarly to do on a MTB. Rincon was the most difficult trail I have ever put tires on. If you other sinner dirt bikers ever are looking push yourself to the limit, this trail is for you. Be prepared for a long difficult journey. Next summer Cannell is on the MTB menu.

Been stressing over taking down some greenhouses out back. Got zapped by zoning enforcement w/some code violations for not having a site plan and building permits for a wholesale nursery on my property. Things have survived over 35 yrs and would have probably outlived me but I think the $1000 site plan app fee and the building and safety inspection fees are now the county's priority. So this morning me and 3 nursery workers finally got after it and had it down to the ground in a half day. I just got them lunch (Juan Pollo family pack) and a 12 pack of Modelo so after the obligatory gritos they are happy campers. And I hope to have the rest of the clean up done by the deadline and avoid the fines and court appearances for failure to comply. Gonna be a 3-4 margarita night tonight for the aches and pains and to serve as nerve tonic.

Just for perspective the double A-frame in back is 35' x 75' with a steel pipe frame every 5'. The shade area in front is 30' x 35' built w/ 2" steel pipe set in concrete. Frick me!

I didn't ride today, yesterday or for almost 3 weeks because of work and then health issues. Long story short; I have psoriatic arthritis and started a new biologic medication about 6 weeks ago. It basically wipes out my immune system since my immune system is what causes the arthritis to begin with. My neck started hurting and I thought I slept on it wrong but it has been getting worse. So bad that I had to leave work early twice this week and have to start on some steroids tomorrow. Turns out I am having a bad inflammation episode in my spine after my last injection.

If I don't get this under control it can cause heart problems and most of my joints already look like sausages from the inflammation and damage. I don't like taking meds but I am trusting my rheumatologist in that I need to do this.

tl;dr - I didn't ride my bike today and won't be riding my bike tomorrow because I am laid up in bed with a neck so sore that it hurts to talk and swallow.

@Cornholio , sorry to hear what you are going through. Autoimmune health issues are hell, physically and mentally. Hoping for the best for you.

Major healing vibes being sent your way @Cornholio. Health issues suck but are sometimes an undeniable reality no matter how hard we try. I was diagnosed with gout about ten years ago but had a hard time believing it. Had a flare up so bad that one time that my skinny azz bird leg was swollen the size of a trash drum. I told the doc if he didn't figure something out quick I was going to amputate my own damn leg and at the time I meant it. Blood tests showed gout but even the doctor didn't believe it cause I just didn't fit the bill of the typical patient. Avoided going on meds but finally agreed and was allergic to the first one. Went on another and still take it to this day and knock on wood have not had a major issue in years. Moral of the story is sometimes the docs are right.

Completely un related but hear me out. Many years ago I had a family friend who happened to be a major mentor to me as I was growing up sustain a spinal injury that left him paralyzed from the neck down. He was far and away toughest dude Ive ever known and it seemed unbelievable at the time. One time I was talking to him and he tells me "life is like a deck of cards, they deal em & we just have to play em." Turns out he wasn't just the toughest but he was also the smartest dude I've ever known.

So sorry to hear this @Cornholio . My wife was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis 24 years ago and it's very similar. Immune system destroys your own joints. RA affects the smaller joints like hands and feet more then knees and elbows, but it's a gnarly disease. She's been fighting it somewhat successfully with a variety of biologics - Enbrel was successful for about 15 years, and now she's on to Orencia. That's usually mixed with anti-inflammatories, prednisone, methotrexate, pain killers or other combo of pharmacological magic/evil. You eventually build resistance to the biologics, so have to move on to a different one.

Hopefully, you will find a regimen that works for you and keeps you active. Thoughts and prayers with you, my friend!

Best wishes, Cornho. Tricky stuff. A riding pal has been dealing with the same condition. He has been pretty successful with diet and supplements in addition to traditional medicine. I can get you connected with him if you want to know specifically what his regimen is. Best wishes!

After 39 days on the pedals, I'm a little overwhelmed by the joy of not mountain biking. I may discover the joy of getting out of bed today, but don't hold me to it. Endorphin flood cresting. Bikes are fun even when you're not riding them :)

Cool weather sounds ideal for a weekday spin. But, no!...

Intuitively, you figure a month or more of riding every day will get you in shape, but (for me, anyway) that's just not the way it works. After two weeks' riding, I'd be in shape, but 30+ days of riding gets me well out of shape. Beat down. Depleted. In survival mode.

By this weekend I'll be ready for a light ride with the misses, but still not close to "recovered." Prolly the following weekend I'll feel decent. But I gotta say...overtraining provides thee best respite from MTB. Too much of a good thing? I'll never cop to that!!!! Go big or stay home!!!!!!!!

While I am not back on the bike yet I was inspired by @kioti to get ready for a spin this week so I put the bike on the stand to get her ready. My neck is much better but my finger and toe joints are stiff... best thing for that though is movement which means low impact exercise such as cycling is encouraged.

Adding some Stan's and really just wiping my bike unnecessarily to be in the garage doing something bike related. I guess I could grease my hub too.

On a 2 week bike break to work the Big Fresno Fair. Closing out our season for 2016.
Fresno sucks to ride so I just leave the bike at home.
I used to dread extended time off the bike, I thought I would lose my "edge". I might come back a little sloppy but it's fun getting that edge back.
I'll be back on the trails on October 18th.

Dull edge? More like, let the soft tissue catch its breath. Just in time for the season. :sneaky:
