The Fire Thread

Went for a quick spin around the corner before dinner. Tonight was the first time I had a clear view and could actually see the mountains, even though I'm in walking distance.

Visible flames on spanish canyon ridge in the east side of canyon park.

Hate to be the bearer of more bad news, but the SQF Fire complex is burning to the edge of Camp Nelson town and Quaking Aspen CG now. Looks like it has already burned over Camp Nelson trail, Freeman Creek, Jordan peak and it is headed toward Summit Tr, Bear Creek Tr and Slate Mountain. The big trees should be ok. But the rest might look a little different when we can go back in there.

I was hoping to get a few dark side shuttles in this fall.
:bang:

@SnakeCharmer methinks I'll be needing someone to show me the goods in the verdugos soon

Me too....and these fires represent yet another example of why I tell people to quit putting off their trips or plans to travel whether they are mountain bike related or not. I know the Darkside isn't a major "destination" for us locals but I think of all the stuff burning in Oregon that was pure epicness that a few people in our group were planning to ride "next year". Well, that ship has sailed because they won't be open for YEARS, if they even come back at all. The environmentalists have been trying to make many of those areas "Wilderness" already which will = no bikes.

Get out there, hit the road and make your dreams come true.

Thankfully fire is not a factor that should lead to more Wilderness designation. If anything fire should make it less likely. Not just reduced aesthetics from fire but having large dozer lines and fire breaks cut and old fire roads graded for use fighting fires to re-emphasize that burned areas are not roadless. The WilderNuts will continue to fight for more Wilderness regardless.
