The Fire Thread

My daughter’s boyfriend is one of those guys. He got off last night and came by for a quick visit. His two week stint was supposed to be done, but he has been extended into next week. He looked pretty beat.
He has been working around Wilson/Zion the last couple of days. He says he thinks most of the Chantry/Sturdevant area was preserved, and that the fire is moving to the backcountry. He also says despite the reports, it is more than 3% contained, so there is that.

also, news weather this morning said a low pressure ridge is coming, and most of the smoke/ash should be cleared out.:thumbsup:

Yes, I heard the same weather forecast. Looking forward to clearer air.

Hate to be the bearer of more bad news, but the SQF Fire complex is burning to the edge of Camp Nelson town and Quaking Aspen CG now. Looks like it has already burned over Camp Nelson trail, Freeman Creek, Jordan peak and it is headed toward Summit Tr, Bear Creek Tr and Slate Mountain. The big trees should be ok. But the rest might look a little different when we can go back in there.

On my ride yesterday I had an opportunity to chat with a fellow rider. He mentioned that he went to ride Harding and the Luge, but both have signs up indicating the area is closed. That's good considering the conditions. Guess I'll stick with county parks for now.

On a good note, looked up and the sky was Blue! or blueish anyway....so I'll ride this afternoon and enjoy the respite from the smoky days.

Yep, I know that spot well. That's were we would park for our Baden-Powell hikes when we were training for Mt. Whitney. This totally sucks, just got a call Mammoth and they highly recommended that I postpone my trip this weekend. O for 2 getting to Mammoth this summer. I hate fires. Can't wait for the Santa Ana's to kick up and wipe the rest of the San Gages off of the map. Going to take a while for some of my favorite local spots to recover.

The snow sticks around until June or July.

Solar-terrestrial geometry. In the Northern Hemisphere, the sun has little effect on the northern slopes in winter. Not as much in summer even. Or the north side of trees, which is why the moss grows on that side. There is significantly less precipitation on the northern slopes of the San Gabriels; it lasts longer because of the lack of insolation.

But you knew that. :facepalm::rolleyes::confused:

(CNN)A firefighter has been killed in the El Dorado Fire, the blaze sparked this month by a botched gender reveal party, according to the San Bernardino National Forest Service.

The firefighter was killed Thursday, the forest service said in a brief statement. The cause of death is under investigation, it said, and the firefighter's identity was withheld pending the notification of next of kin.
"Our deepest sympathies are with the family, friends and fellow firefighters during this time," the forest service said in a brief statement on Twitter.

A helicopter prepares to drop water at a wildfire in Yucaipa, California, on September 5.
The El Dorado Fire was started by a "smoke-generating pyrotechnic device" used at a party over Labor Day weekend in El Dorado Ranch Park in Yucaipa, about 70 miles east of Los Angeles, according to Cal Fire investigators.

Fire officials told CNN at the time that those involved were cooperating with fire investigators.
As of Friday morning, the El Dorado Fire had scorched more than 21,000 acres and was 66% contained.
