The Automobile Thread

I'm actually giving some serious thought to an e-tron GT right now. It's a car that belies my station in life, but there is a perfect storm of incentives on a 2 year lease that, when combined with an employee deal, would mean about $35K off the sticker price. One of those crazy deals that occasionally pop up for employees where everyone says "remember when....." for years to come. It's still not what I'd call cheap, but the car does come with unlimited free charging with Electrify America for 3 years. It's not the ideal car for my lifestyle, but could be an interesting, semi-short term solution.

But does U-Haul have a hitch for it? Upon which to install your bike rack, of course....:p

Even if, I'd never make it in or out of any driveway without dragging the rack . It does actually have slickly designed mounting points with covers on either side of the glass roof to install low profile OEM cross bars.

Was in San Fran this week and saw a car in front of the hotel with quite a few folks around it. Checked it out and ask a few questions. it was a NIO, first one I've ever seen. Chinese company not yet approved for sale in the U.S. No pics, but car was attractive enough.

China eCars are coming.

After letting my motorcycle sit for over a year, sad, I put a new (lithium upgrade) battery in it* and commuted in today on my gBike. Probably going to be riding my bicycle a little less often in the future. Bike sat since last April, and it started up as if I parked it yesterday. Pretty good for being 20 years old.

*I have never used a battery tender on anything before because I have never let something sit long enough that I would need such a thing (does solar on the van count?).

@stevers let us know about the R1S. I'd love to hear your review and thoughts after driving it a while. Tell us about where and how you use it and how it does.
It's 100% a city queen. Haven't seen dirt in the week that I've had it, and unlikely to see any dirt except the parking lot at trail heads. The main reason to buy is the 3 rows. I usually Turo a 3 row SUV when doing road trips with my 1 child and grandparents. My use case is really a non-minivan minivan. If they made an electric minivan with 300 miles of range, i'd be all over that.

I'm 5'10" and my wife is 5'1". We both think the "low" suspension setting is too high for ingress/egress, but I have some runningboards on order.

Driving-wise, it's violently quick. It has no business doing 0-60 in 3.x seconds, weighing 7,000 lbs. It feels a whole lot faster than my older Tesla S at 5.0s, and comparable to the 488 ferrari and GTRs I've driven. That said, my wife did not appreciate the full pull, and I'd never accelerate like that with the kid in the car. So it's really going to stay in the mild mannered mode for most of it's life.

I just adjusted the hitch and removed the 2nd bike rack so it can clear the rear view camera. The frame of the bike rack kind of interferes with the rear parking sensors, so now i'm looking for a 4" drop hitch. I'll get some pictures of my setup in case anyone is interested in bike rack and how it clears the tailgate/rear sensors.

On my Tacoma, I don't care that the hitch rack interfere with the sensors - I know how to use my mirrors.
I was recently talking with a friend. He's about 6'6" and his wife his not quite 5'. They are looking for basically a full size SUV. They've been renting and trying out, looks like the key will be movable pedals.

FOR SALE: 2020 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring, Excellent, 67,000 miles. I have a silver Grand Touring (loaded) CX-5 recently serviced by the local Mazda dealer I plan to sell or wholesale by the end of the week. The best wholesale bid I have is $19,100. If anyone here wants it, you can have it for the $19,100 wholesale bid. Really nice. ~24mpg average and your bike will fit inside. My gravel bike fits in back with the wheels on and the large MTB with the front wheel off. Local dealers are asking ~$24k for the same vehicle.

Nice car. Nice price. Looks like a perfect vehicle for an active person - about the same size as my Q5 which works perfectly for surf, ski, snowboard, mt. biking needs. Easy to drive, easy to park and carries stuff well.

I may hit you up about this. Been needing a new car for a while now and the CX5 checks a lot of boxes for me. Need to see if my pre approved car loan from Schools First CU would work with a private seller though.

PS: Thanks guys. It's a really nice CX-5, and it's in great shape, but not quite new shape like the cars I purchase new are!
