Strong. I sure would love a romp in that 928 S4. Was it not a manual? I had a great uncle that I didn't see often who had a red 928 S. It was the first "nice" car I ever rode in as a kid. I was in awe of that car.

Some of the cars on these lists I would have LOVED to have (especially at the time, excepting the 1972 Datsun when I was 2) ...

Yeah, the 3rd gen RX-7 was an amazing car. I wasn't even in the market for one. I actually went in to look at their MX-6. They had an RX-7 R1 on the showroom floor and asked if I would be interested in it. Darned pushy salespeople. I told them there's no way I can afford that. They told me they'd give it to me for the same price as the MX-6 and I asked, where do I sign?

It's the only car I wish I still had. Unfortunately, it was so much fun to drive, I started commuting in it. I put over 135k on it in less than 4 years.

I loved that Scirocco so much. Black, with tinted windows. I got it in 1990 when I turned 16. I was supposed to get my dad's 1985 100k mile GTI, but had an uncle who always had cool cars. He had that Scirocco with 30K miles on it, and was about to trade it in on the newly released Corrado. My grandmother, in a show of borderline inappropriate generosity bought it from him for what he was going to get for a trade in, and bequeathed it to me. I had no business having a car that nice at 16, but I appreciated every mile in it.

I got the Talon in 93. Bought it the Summer after my freshman year in college off a guy who was in the Army and never drove it. Had 10K miles on it. It was kind of a hot mess, but man was it fun. Relative to what was around at the time, and coming out of the VW, the turbo felt like a rocket. From a dig I could pull away from the 5.0 Mustangs of the day, which were kind of the performance benchmark. It had the worst shifter ever. I went through a couple clutches, and had to have an engine out repair (for what I can't remember) in the first 50K miles. Multitudes of electronic gremlins, and only one of the pop-up headlights actually popped up, so I had to pop the hood and manually wind it up every time I turned the lights on. I think the unreliability is what prompted me to follow it up with a Honda Accord, but damn was it fun when it was working.

1972 Mercedes 220 diesel stick shift ( gift ) 0-50 mph in 15 minutes. Broke the timing chain which broke cam towers. Junk yard towers replaced shimmed with beer can. Developed a short which melted the 27 wires off the keyed switch. I spend a week of my vacation upside down under the dash with a razor blade isolating wires. We got it running again 100%. I was reported to AQMD after a channel 5 news report on smoking cars and how to report them. I had the manuals and went through the injection pump drip procedure for less smoke however I simply said that I was following an Orange County Transit Bus that day in question. They left me alone. That car did smoke black at high elevation.

1971 Ford Courier truck. Stick shift. Hers. ( gift ) She and I traded MBZ for Courier. Her truck was bright orange. Blah!
1974 Triumph Spitfire convertible ( gift from my brother -family car and also death trap in So Cal. due to size. Always ran ) I dumped it for $ 500.00 and never looked back. I still remember the license plate number. The Mrs. loved that car and is still mad at me to this day for selling it.
1977 Mercedes 240 Diesel Auto 0-50 mph in 14 min. 59 seconds. Getting Better! Altitude injection compensation valve. ( Didn't smoke at elevation )
1976 Jeep J10 Truck. 4 speed with granny gear. Loved that truck. Dealer installed air conditioning. Levi interior.
1993 Chevy Safari Van. With bad peeling paint the Mrs. drove it to the Beverly Wilshire hotel for an onsight inspection, pulled up while blasting AC/DC ( Cassette ) and told the valet to not scratch the paint and walked in like a boss for her meeting. When she got home she began yelling at me for a new car. She showed me the worn out van key and that even the yellow cab drivers had new cars. She was so mad the curls in her hair were unspringing. Like a man I solved the problem. I got her a new key and an Earl Scheib paint job. I reluctantly admit that it didn't solve the problem. We went down and bought a 2003 Chevy Tahoe. The Safari Van still had chilly cold A/C after 198,000 miles.

lol
That 240Z went through a total motor rebuild. My buddy had the same car, he chose to do a Chevy 350 v8 conversation. I chose to rebuild the stock 240Z motor going all out for street performance. When I was done it beat his v8 conversation, not only in 1/8 mile times but kicked it’s ass in canyon carving. The power to weight ratio and balance was the key.

Race mid rev cam, bored out .030 over, ported polished, blueprinted, dual downdraft Webber carbs, Hooker 3 into 2 exhaust through two cherry bomb [basically straight] mufflers and stacked out the back. Proved to be quite the performer. Funny, I built this in the mid 1980’s just as 5.0 mustangs hit the streets. I surprised more than a few of those. Loud ass car with centerline wheels and wide 50 series tires all around, fiberglass Porsche style whale tail.

Excuse the 1985 Kodak disposable camera photo that’s been scanned numerous times. ;)

It would be close. My motorcycle list would be shorter, but more eclectic: CZ, Ossa, Bultaco, early Suzuki and Yamaha, BMW, Can Am, Penton, Husky and KTM.

TA

You’re my hero. Loved all those bikes. Had a few older ones. First Yamaha production monoshock. 1975 MX 400B along with some others. Rode the 1974 Yamaha MX 360 and MX 250. Along with most all the first YZ’s. Rode many of the old motocrossers. Bultaco 360 Pursang, a few Huskies, Maico, Honda Elsinore..both the first original 1974 250 and later the 125. Some others that escape my memory at the moment. Some of the ones you listed as owning have always been on my dream list.

Nice! I loved that car when I was a kid. Still looks great.

This covers me, the wife & 2 kids…let’s just say that Dave Ramsey thinks I’m due.

I “sold” my first two to my little brother for a bro-deal. The 4runner & XC90 were totaled. Still have the last 4. So across 31 years of car ownership I’ve sold exactly one car on the open market.

1980 Toyota Pickup (bought 1991)
1994 GMC Sonoma
1998 Nissan Sentra (for wife, just married)
1999 4 runner (bought for wife 2002, took over Sentra)
2006 XC90 for wife, took over 4runner
2013 Fusion PHEV
2015 Outback for wife
2018 Bolt
2009 Mazda3 for daughter

I figured I’d put down my dad’s list. Try to find the theme in his daily drivers. This is someone who started driving when Eisenhower was President:

38 Chevy Coupe
68 Chevy C10
72 Chevy K5
88 Chevy K2500
03 Chevy K2500
15 Chevy Colorado

Now, I suppose we could throw in the motos & project vehicles (the project vehicle list is worthy of a tv show—the K5’s engine swap was legendary), but I’ve marveled at the daily driver consistency. Stick with what works for you.

Brings me back to my high school years. I was always partial to the 944 ... and I am pretty sure everyone in my age range +/- 5 years would take a 944 over a 928.:cautious:

OK, I'll play.

1970 Dodge Coronet 440. 440 was a trim level, not the engine. Mine had 2bbl 318, AT, 2.73 gears. Still went fairly good. Bought it for $300 wh1en I was 15 when it was 10 years old and had the tranny rebuilt in time to drive it when 16.

1963 VW Bug. 1200cc I think 34hp. 4 speed manual of course. My aunt bought it new, drove it for about 10 years, then her 3 daughters used it as first car. Then my mom got it. Then I did, then my sister. Finally junked after about 450 k miles. 3 engine replacements, 1 transacle, a couple of paint jobs and a 12V conversion.

1979 Renault 17TS Gordini. Pretty sporty little thing. Tough to keep running. Engine blew, weak sleeved cylinders.

1970 Jeep Wagoneer. A bucket of problems. Three a rod and put big whole in the block. It had. Buick 350. Got a used one and put it in at my UCI apartment parking lot. Junked it for like $300.

1984? Honda Nighthawk 450. Just a basic twin for commuting. Only moto owned.

1987 Jeep Wrangler. First year of Wrangler. S model. S = stripped. No radio, no backseat, no no carpet, no AC, 2.5l I4, 5 speed manual. First new car. Bought it right after graduating, had lots of fun with it for 8 years. Also had a number of repairs.

1995 GMC Jimmy. Bought new when I got a new job. I think first year for this model. The S10 size. 4x4 4 door. V6 that was basically 6 cylinders of a 8 cyl 350. Thought it would be reliable. It was not. Lots of adventures.

1987 Civic Hatchback. This was a pretty popular year for the hatch, and the S models were cool. Mine was HE or HF I think. 1300cc and only a 4 speed manual. No AC. Got great mileage and reliable. Got it used as an interim dealing with GMC issues.

2006 Dodge Dakota 4x4, dual cab, V6. This was another engine reduced from a good V8, in this case the 318, same as that '70 Dodge above. Again, one I had some issues with, mostly after 130k miles. Donated away and it sold at auction for $3400, surprised me.

2022 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 Dual Cab, short bed, V6, TRD Off Road. Wanted the long bed, basically not available in SoCal with all the issues of the current market. It'd been 16 years since the Dodge so time for a new one.

Since getting together with my wife she has had
1996ish Mercury version of the Fusion.
2002 Ford Explorer.
2006 Camry
2012 Camry
2018 Toyota Highlander (oddly, same engine as my Tacoma)
The Camrys were both 4cyl mid level trim and passed on to her daughter, currently driving the '18.

I forgot to add in our 2007 Chevy HHR. I bought it off a friend for $ 3,000. It has 143,000 miles on it and is our grocery store, Home Depot, Costco runner. The paint is in great condition and runs like new but it doesn't handle road bumps well. We have been driving it for 2-3 years now. Great car. Most importantly my mountain bike fits in the back if I pull the front wheel.

Funnest vehicle Ive owned to date was a 2001 Dodge Dakota Crewcab Sport. It had their OHC 4.7L V8 with a 5 speed manual trans. That thing was torquey has heck. Jumped forward when the clutch was dropped. However, the trans was anything but sporty with its long throws and truck hauling designed gearing. 1st gear was almost worthless since it redlined the motor instantaneously. Good for grunting a loaded down truck up a hill or lauch ramp from a stop and thats it. It started off the line just fine in second gear for normal driving. V8s sound much happier when they are tied to a stick shifter trans.

Forgot the Shaggin Wagon. 1982 Chevy conversion van. Red interior, fold out bed, etc. Found it on CL for $400. Pulled out the remaining middle captain chair and loaded motorcycles inside to take to the track and sleep in. It had fresh tags, but no way it would pass smog (I never even tried). Drove it until the tags expired, then sold it to a junk yard for a profit :Roflmao

You not only win the greatest number of vehicles - you win the most obscure. See if the readers found the unicorn in the list. Or maybe whale is a better analogy.

Car lists are fun.

87 VW Scirocco 16v
1990 Eagle Talon TSI AWD
1995 Honda Accord EX (had this car for 9 years - it was a dark time)

2016 Audi Q5
2018 Subaru Outback 3.6

2021 Audi Q5

The 16v Scirocco was my dream car in high school. A few years later I got a 16V Jetta. It was a great little car.

My first couple of cars were a '67 Ford Galaxie 500 and an '85 Nissan Sentra. I purchased the Galaxie in '83 from the original owners. The husband had bought it for his wife for Christmas in '66. It came with a list of all maintenance performed for the 16 years they had it. I sold it a couple of years later. The Sentra was a demo with maybe 5k miles on it. The first ex-wife took that with her in '89. Rode my motorcycle until I picked up the RX-7 a few years later.
As you can see, I was never really a car guy.

My cousin bought a '66 Galaxie at about the same time you did. It was siting in a driveway year after year but it was well covered, gorgeous, and in excellent condition. My cousin would approach the owner time after time until he finally bit. Baby blue in color, white interior, and white convertible top. Super long and super low and just a pleasure to cruise in. It had a 289 so it was fairly gutless but that didn't matter.

Mine was in excellent shape as well. I think maybe they only drove it to church on Sundays. The white paint was nearly flawless and the red vinyl interior looked brand new. The 289 was gutless but had no problems cruising on the freeway at 80 mph.

I used to admire a B5 blue 1971 CUDA 340 auto parked in a driveway in San Diego. I passed by frequently for about four years and always wanted to stop and ask if they’d sell it. One evening I’m driving by and it was still there. The very next early 7am Saturday morning I was driving by and it was out in the street with a 4-sale sign in the window. I hit the skids and went and inquired about it. An older gentleman in his late 70’s answered and said he had just put it out there. He explained that it was his wife’s car and they were the original owners bought at a Plymouth dealership in Mission Valley just two miles down the street. Seriously, this story intrigued me. He went on to tell me she only used the car to get back and forth to work which was a 10 mile round trip for the last 20 years. I walked around the car and it was all in original condition with only one repaint. I then took it for a test drive and as we are driving I asked what he wanted for it. He says, well she doesn’t want to sell as he pauses and then suddenly blurted out…I guess $2,500 would be fair. After parking it back at his place I told him it’s sold and I’ll be right back with the money.

I owned that car for three years without doing a thing to it. Sold it for double the money. Of course this was in the early 1990’s before these muscle cars skyrocketed in value.
