Snow Sports and/or Surfing

Here we go!!
Mt High Conditions 3-10-21.png

Bear Mtn today. Had hoped to do laps on Silver Mountain, but they’ve closed that area and are doing some major snow excavation from those trails to try to keep something else open until next weekend. But Geronimo was in good enough shape, if pretty cut up by the time I left.

Kind of a contrast from last Friday, when my daughter went with her friends in a snowstorm. Drove the Bolt instead of the Outback, as there was definitely no need for all wheel drive, and the Bolt is way more fun on that road.

Town is full of spring vacationers.

Came home and took a nap...

Likely the last ski weekend of my season. Mammoth Thursday and Friday, June on Saturday. Funny how April can be—this same week, a few years ago, we got a foot of fresh every night, all week. This year, it felt like September. Crowds were surprisingly thick during the week, but surprisingly thin over the weekend. The wife’s ideal ski day consists of wide, blue-to-black groomers with nobody on them, and that’s pretty much what June served up, on ice.

Looked at property in Crowley and Swall Meadows on the way home...great access to the Lower Rock Creek trailheads.

Well, it was an OK season. I got in about three "powder" days and some hot laps at the East ski area including 6 runs in Olympic Bowl, which had never been open in my previous years. I think I made the trip up there about 10 times all told - definitely enough to pay off the season pass and then some.

Time to drag out the surfboards!

FTMFL. It's truly surreal that I didn't get a day on snow, again. What a weird time in life. That said, I don't think I have it in me to truly let the season pass me by, so I'll likely do a midweek 1 day bonsai run up to Mammoth in the next few weeks.

Even though I didn't make it up to snowboard this year, it always leaves me a bit melancholy when the season is officially over at Mt. High. I spent many days/nights up there from 2000-2005 riding, nothing beats being one of the first few chairs ups to ride the fresh pow on the East mountain! I have enjoyed all your updates in this thread, thanks for sharing them.

I had at least one missed season, when the kids were little. I usually tried to at least sneak up to Baldy or Summit for a late season consolation run. But it was always a little sad when I’d look up, winter was over, and I’d missed it.

get to Mammoth soon, it’s not going to be a long season...

13 snow days for me this season. Easily a record. There were probably 13 1-day seasons in those kid years.

The thing is, this was two. Last season was the knee recovery. I was sure I'd get tons of days this year. Lot's of conspiring factors, and exactly like you said, I looked up and the season was all but over. Admittedly, there were probably days I could have gone but rode my bike instead, without even really weighing the options. I'm kind of at peace with it, but it's surreal nonetheless.

I re-upped my Mt. High pass for next year, but my daughter is now in the space that Mt. High is not positioned to fill - lower intermediate. There're really only two runs - Chisholm and Conquest - that suit her ability, and Chisholm is the most crowded run at the area. She either need to progress to steeper slopes quickly to handle Wyatt and Catch Ya Later plus the runs at East, or she will be kind of stuck. For me, I'm still diggin' the variety offered when the snow is good, which has been surprisingly often over the past three years.

Now I’ve got to get my bike fitness back...those 13 days came straight out of my saddle time...

Doesn’t Mt High have some sort of reciprocal agreement with Snow Valley? That would at least add a bit of lower intermediate variety.

I remember my first few days of snowboarding, Wyatt psyched me out...how in the world would I make it down that?

Yes. Snow Valley is included, I believe. Or at least a few days. Good idea.

Bought a pair of Altai Hok skis for bc travels, tested them out by snow camping in Little Lakes Valley this weekend:

Camped at Chickenfoot lake, had a blast tooling around the basin. Hoks have a built-in skin underfoot, so climbing was a breeze. The jury's still out on the DH's, as I'm a VERY rusty tele-skier! Biffed it several times with a 40 lb. pack on; nothing like getting shoved into the snow face-first!

Nice!

That’s quite a long road walk from the road closure. In the summer, Chickenfoot Lake made a perfect overnight destination for my early-elementary age kids. I can see how it would be an excellent ski tour.

Did you turn next year’s pass on yet? Redemption time is upon us...Howard Scheckter is calling for a foot of fresh Sunday, followed by a possible dump on the 29th.

Dude, you may have just made my day. I have already renewed for next year, but it didn't even occur to me that I could use next year's pass now, though that makes total sense. I was very loosely planning on going up next Wed/Thurs anyway, as those are my days off. Between this, and my first cup of coffee hitting just right, I'm kind of giddy right now.

Very nice! I've done a good bit of fishing in LLV. That area is about as beautiful as beautiful gets. Has to be even more so in the winter, and without the foot traffic that the place gets. Well done!

Well I finally threw done and ordered a surfboard. Its been several years since I had one and wanted to pick up surfing again. I got a Maurice Cole 7'1 Twin fin reverse vee. My friend in Santa Cruz is the rep and has a few different one of his boards but not a twin reverse vee. I have to work tomorrow but hopefully I can head down to Ventura or Torrance on Sunday and check it out.

Cool. Sounds loose and skaty! Good Luck!

I bought my daughter a new board today. I documented her impaled Costco Wavestorm in another thread. Got her an 8' Odysea soft top from Catch Surf in Laguna. She even got to customize it with some cool stamps (not stickers).

And I surfed for the first time in about a year today, as I documented elsewhere. 7'8" Stewart 949 set up as a 1 + 2 fin. It came as a 5-fin - but that allows for any fin configuration you want. My rib cage is sore. It's a lot like the feeling after your first bike ride in a year. That second ride HURTS! Second surf tomorrow is gonna hurt.

I plan on getting my daughter a softtop board like a Odysea or South Bay board, she goes to UCSB and wants to learn how to surf. We will be in Pismo for a week in July and will try to teach her there.

That Stewart is a nice board!! I looked it up on their site. Lots of volume like mine. I think down the road I’d like to get something like that, I almost did with a Spyder and my friend convinced me to get the Maurice Cole.

So last chair for snowboard, first run for bike, or last chair for bike, first run for snowboard? It looked like spring, except the trees had no buds.
