I Rode My Bike Today...

A friend of a friend that rides bikes said a source saw this camera setup on a pole in the Santa Monica mountains. It appears to be looking for Mountain Lions? Yet is at a triple intersection. What’s going on?

Is this for the JPL parking? No visible LEO presence at Red Box or Switzers, nor at the Gould Mesa parking/entrance on CA-2. It's 'easy' (steep FR) to exit Gould Mesa if you're doing the Switzers->JPL section.

There was tape and signs all over at the parking lot and gate when a I was by there a few weeks ago. It was obvious that is was closed then.

From this past weekend

Headed out to the desert before the heat wave hits this week.

I'm sure some of you have heard of this ride... 100 years ago a rail line was punched through Carrizo Gorge east of San Diego nick-named the Impossible Railway. It has numerous tunnels and wooden bridges including Goat Canyon Trestle, the world's largest all wood trestle.

The line was seldom profitable and has been sold a number of times. It last saw freight traffic in 2008 and has since fallen into disrepair. Despite being private railway property, it has become popular with hikers, mountain bikers and motos. It makes for an interesting bike ride now including bypasses around several tunnels that are locked and gated.

Abandoned cars sit on some sidings, these ones from Montreal of all places

Bypass to one of the tunnels has some of the biggest cholla cactus I've ever seen

Nice bit of singletrack

This section bypasses a different tunnel and is no longer rideable. The famous Miles Todd crash, filmed by MTB Bill circa early 2000s. Miles escaped with broken hand, sprained wrist and many bruises

Nice artwork

Bonelli ride this morning...
Empty lot at the park n ride on via Verde just before 6am.
No loop, the trail along the airfield is closed, everything else on the south side good to go.

Parking lot looked like Disney Land when I got back @7:30.... Probably close to 20 bikes on the way in.... Glad I got there early to avoid it..

Mustard it's slowly crowding the doubletrack..
Managed to scrape together just over 10 miles....

Great ride this morning with @Bill and @Danimal from Dan's house. Paved bike path to Cook's Corner. Santiago Canyon road/Modjeska to STT, Luge, back to Whiting and back to Dan's. Sunny, warm but not hot. One rattler coiled on the side of the trail. I don't know how to clear a coiled rattler, so I waited for a minute or two, then bushwhacked on the high side around him, as we had a line of riders stacking up behind us. Where is @SnakeCharmer when you need him? I'm told Bill just pissed him off and flicked him further into the bushes with his front wheel. Bill ain't gonna take no Sh!t from no rattler.

No other real stories to tell. Lots of riders and hikers, as expected. Fun and magically uninterrupted ride down The Luge.

Great socializing with a couple of good dudes. 17.5 mi 2500'. Bikes are fun!

We never got Dad up there for a night ride in the mountains. Maybe there’s hope for the kid. :p

Do mornings count? Technically I rode with you in the dark up black star, along with a couple hundred others.

Edit: And to be fair I do get up at 3:45am for work and have been adding to the overpopulation of the planet the past 4+ years so my riding in general has lagged immensely during parental duties. :p

It was supposed to be hot today.....so the plan was to get out while it was still cool. This means getting out before the sun.

Haven't been doing pre-dawn rides...mostly because it was too cold over the winter. Today was the perfect day to kick it off.

Met up with The Professor and rolled at 4am. Very quiet morning. Slow rolled it up Coal Canyon. He was tired. I got nauseous about 1/3rd the way up. Eventually it would subside. Guessing the Mediteranian we had for dinner was sitting well.

Just after the rock pile, had a small bobcat run out in front of me. We also saw an owl walking around the ground when we entered the RV Park.

It started to get light before we reached Sierra Peak. However the sun hadn't crested over the mountains yet....so technically we had sunrise at Sierra Peak.

From there we headed over to Main Divide/Skyline. Hadn't been on Sierra Ridge for a little while. Some spots had been graded. At the top of Skyline we hopped onto the the Troy Lee Trails. We were only gonna do the first couple. Figured it would be too hot to climb back up from the bottom.

The singletracks were loose and slippery. I don't ride these that often, but are fun when I do. The Professor burped his front tire which led to a washout. A little blood donation to the new dirt for him. On the last steep drop in we did, it was super slippy....even my back tire broke loose and I had to put a foot out. This leads to a nice G-Out. The Professor proceeded to get off balance, got too far behind the seat...which led to the rear tire wedging him under the seat. To make things worse, he hit the G-Out and bottomed out the suspension....pinching him pretty harshly in the manhood. He was quite uncomfortable the rest of the ride.

From there we climbed back up Skyline, back out to Sierra Peak, and dropped down Coal.

When the breeze was blowing, temps were pretty nice. However it did feel a lot warmer than the temps indicated.

Such a great morning to be out.

I rode my bike TONIGHT.

We jumped on our bikes this evening after it got dark. The plan was to hopefully encounter a snake or whatever else was crawling around out there in the desert night.

We saw:

5 mice
1 rabbit
1 stink bug
1 freshly run over Mohave Green rattler
1 snake track in the sand

Mission accomplished!
