Yesterday... The Professor and I planned on riding to Old Camp and then down the Luge, but the weather and mustard had other ideas. The ground wasn't bad, but the mustard was soaking wet, and we had to fight our way through it. We weren't even to F-U Hill and the Professor pulled the plug on the Old Camp idea. At least that's what I think he said. It was hard to understand him with a mouthful of mustard. :p Wet, soaked and frozen we swallowed our pride and dropped down the Luge... A whopping 8 mile ride. At least it was on the single speed for a little extra suffering.

Today... @mtnbikej and I went for a "quick" Maple-Motorway loop. I say quick, because it was a lot quicker than we were in the winter, but it wasn't as quick as we'll (hopefully) get during the summer. All of the sediment has been scraped off of Maple Springs, and the rock fall has been cleared. That means the gate is open for the 4x4 knuckleheads. Thankfully we only saw a couple of people on the pavement section, and a worker installing moto barriers on Main Divide. Main Divide is getting packed down from all of the workers, so there were solid lines in most areas. It's losing its loose rocky face that it wore in the winter. Hmmmmm... Someone had me lead down Motorway- probably to clear the path through the overgrowth. :cautious: And overgrown it was... But in a really neat way. I've never seen so many colors on the Motorway. Reds, Purples, Yellows, Silver, and all of the rest. It was really cool- when we weren't trying to find the trail bed. :p

First time I've done the loop on the single speed since last fall. I'd forgotten how smooth it is. No clank-clank from the derailleur and the cassette. Just tires on dirt... :inlove:

Fun run. Today more than yesterday!

Yup....had a small window to ride today...almost thought i wouldn't get one in.

Was off today. Been a while since had ridden Maple/Motorway. Disappointed to see the gate open again....at least we had a good 4 months of it being closed.

Legs felt heavy from the start. Maybe I should have had breakfast before the ride.

Uneventful up to 4 Corners. Temps were nice most of the way up. Bugs were not an issue.

Dropping from 4 Corners, had some contact lens issues, but they sorted themselves out.

They are replacing the moto barriers that were ripped out when the cut the fire break during the Holy Fire....however, they still have not fixed the barrier at the top of Motorway....WTF???

Steve led down...not sure how comfortable he was out front. The trail is getting pretty overgrown.

Good to get out for a mid day, mid week ride.

Happy to get a post work mini lap in at oaks.

Saw 8 other wheeled vehicles. 4 were well-loved 15 year old hardtails, the other 4 were motorized. One e-rider was younger and fitter than I, the other 3 were able bodied if portly.

Mountain biking is dead, and I must have missed the obituary.

Glad to hear you got out. Mountain biking is alive and well outside the county parks.
It’s just weird how this year, everyone I see is either riding a bike they pulled out of the back of a storage unit for the first time in a decade, or they’re motorized. The prior 3-4 years every rider was on the Santa Cruz flavor of the month.

I tend to avoid weekend mornings when most riders of modern pedal bikes are out. So I’m just wondering how much data there is in my anecdote.

Gotta say, I have yet to see an e-bike on Monroe...

The afternoons are a mix out there.

Still 60% Santa Cruz Uber Bikes here in Laguna.

I met a couple, man and woman, probably in late 50's, early 60's there in the parking lot just about to months ago after all the rain. They asked how to get there, about the trail etc. I gave them the scoop. Not sure if they even made it by the creek bed. There was still a lot of water, hard to follow the trail. ....

Now the Roadies coming down (upp?) fr Baldie I talked to at the top last time, hopefully they made it. The woman said she had a new stumpy, then asked how it compares to the floop... I just said, you will have a lot of fun, won't be a problem.

What goes down must come up. Did Space Mountain again today, but for the first time took the west end of the trail down to Portrero, and then back. Felt super confident getting Smashy on the descents, but it was total amateur hour on the climbs. Couldn't hold a line, back tire constantly slipping. Getting out of granny gear helped with traction, but tis the season I guess. Maybe an air pressure adjustment is in order? Or maybe I just sucked today. Long, steep, and loose AF descents on the west trail meant soul sucking climbs on the return. Traction was so bad even when I had to HAB I could barely even walk. Twas a day, but the finish was super fun. 12.3/2092. Also, a bike glamour shot since for a brief time it was the cleanest it's been since about 500 feet into my first ride on it.

Trailforks wouldn't sync the ride to Strava for some reason, and I've learned that TF's climbing is ambitiously inaccurate. That's my favorite climb right there! Haha! I've actually never witnessed anyone clear it even with perfect traction. There are a lot of tough climbs on the ride you did today.

Today I rode and got that damn monkey off my back after that stupid crash recently:cool:. One of my buddies over at crank bros hit me up and wanted to do a quick lap after work. Of course I was in. We started from crank bros/ my office which is next door and were pushing it on the climbs but no PR's on my account for some reason :gag:. Still felt good regardless. Backstreets of NoLag to Dartmoor, to boat road, to bommer and down that new trail I'm still getting use to TnA:whistling:. The lap itself took us about 50mins door to door:thumbsup:. Since it was new minion day the added bonus was the nice exfoliation the new tires provided by kicking up little bits of sand up on my face. I now have the skin of a 20 something girl...:p Video is below of the last few sections of the trail where I did not crash this time.

Hopefully, I'll get in to see the Doc tomorrow and get this head opened up in time for a little longer ride this weekend.

But, I managed a little spin time up the Trabuco wash to one of the most scenic spots in the forest... Lower Trabuco. I get almost 7 miles and 1,000 feet to the little parking lot at the base of Trabuco, and it's a nice mellow pedal up the wash. I went as far as the abandoned car and turned around. Not epic by any stretch, but it was on dirt... 17 miles and 1600 feet.

Best spot in the forest...

And I played around on the base of Cadillac a little... It's nice to see that they're decorating. o_O

Picture Slot Machine... I miss Trabuco. Best part of the forest. :(

TNBSSR... Minus one Professor and one Mini Professor.

I took the Hightower to make sure everything was working as it should... New Rekon 2.4s front and back, new resin pads for the XT 8020s, new KMC chain, new cassette, and a new/old chainring. It was quiet and smooth, even when I stood and mashed. I declare it KokoReady. :D It's going on the wall until departure, and the single speed will get the call up for any rides between now and then.

Speaking of standing and mashing... One of the single speeders was feeling especially spunky last night! @horsebikerider led the charge up the mountain, and the rest of us just sort of fell off the back and tried to hang on. Damn single speeders. :D:thumbsup:

Nice night, but definitely a little cooler than I expected coming down.

Needs more mustard.....:D

Was across the canyon from @tbarnesarc yesterday... 3 loops in Aliso. Not horn tooting, but first time in a long while I was able to make it up Cholla without a stop, even though a molasses-like 8.5 minutes. Made my day :) Mathis nice and hardpacked now, wasn't too bad either.

Rockit in great shape except the last fast section scares the crap out of me with all the hardened ruts and and diagonal/off camber lips ready to throw me down. Mentally Sensititve is running real fast. It almost seems sanitized, but could be the new bike :) They re-named Meadows trail to Mustard trail (or should). Went up and down it, the invasive plants yanking at my brakes and bars sending me off trail numerous times, and near zero sight lines. Prob will avoid until it gets brushed.

Oh yeah, just a heads up, saw a horsey on Wood canyon rd.. Came up behind it, stopped and walked. Rider was appreciative but waved me by as she turned the horse to see me.

Couple of pics at top of Mustard
