I Rode My Bike Today...

I was going to be in San Diego on Sunday so I decided to make the best use of the morning and hit a couple spots. First I stopped at little know spot that everyone's heard about before, but then I moved over to the newest piece of fun south of the 58. The new concrete pump track off of the 56 in San Diego proper. To say I was impressed is an understatement. Bicycle of all kinds, skateboards of all kinds, people of all ages and lots of spectators. This whole park is brand new and seemed to be very well received by all the locals.

It was a slow start for me today. I had hoped to be on my bike by 10:30 am but work got in the way. It was a late afternoon ride from the tree farm to Santiago Peak. 17 miles of climbing with 17 miles of Yeeehaaawww! I zipped back down the mountain telling myself to chill while avoiding random softball and bowling ball size rocks not to wad it up. I only saw one gravel grinder and one service truck all afternoon.. and a helo flying down below. BTW Gnats taste just like chicken as they swarmed around my head for the most part for much of the ride. Pituwee!:x3: 33.7 miles / 4,926 elevation. ** The Maple Springs road has been graded. The gate could open at any time-

Yesterday was a nice easy paced recovery ride with my buddy Tony.

Today I set out to do some more "flat" miles but unfortunately you have to climb to get to the "flat" sections. Dropped into Cheeseboro and took Sheep Corral over to Las Virgenes and did a lap of the Las Virgenes Open Space then back up and over Sheep Corral and back out to Albertson and home. While cruising down Las Virgenes I saw someone riding what I thought was a familiar looking bike. My suspicions were confirmed later when I ran into the same guy cresting Power Line onto Albertson. Turns out it was @buggravy on his blue GG. Very nice to meet you Matt and glad to see you putting in the miles.

@UPSed Great meeting you as well. Though the disparity in miles covered by each of us between encounters was kind of absurd, but humility was kind of the theme for my ride.

I set out to push myself harder and further than I had before, and to that end mission accomplished. My route was LV Canyon, Tecate, Albertsons to China Flat, down Palo Comado to Sheep Coral, and back to LVC. The climb up LVC and then Tecate was a thing, and Tecate took the wind out of my sails a bit. It was a mess, and challenged me quite a bit. Mainly though, I couldn't shake the feeling that it wasn't the right day for Tecate. Most lines were not over my head, but consequences on either side of some were not unsubstantial. The fact that I was alone, without cell service, no signs of any recent traffic on the trail, and no one knowing that I was on that trail gave me pause and I walked a few lines that I normally wouldn't. That was kind of a buzzkill, even if the right call. I finished strong though, feeling like I had something to prove to myself when I hit Sheep Coral. That has become my favorite, and now that I have some familiarity with the trail I was able to rally sections that I used to pick and choose carefully on. Good, mostly fun day.

Nice picts of Upper Las V cyn. No cell there or even in front @ Sheep Corral-Cheeseboro. You should get great recpt at China Flats, at least on the west side. Also on Runkle Ranch. Good call on taking care when riding empty trails out of coverage. To add a little pucker factor ride it alone at night, Cheese is the bomb at night. There is nobody out so you can just kick it. It is one fast twisty trail. Then when you hit Sulfur Springs it is big ring all the way out.
Happy solo trails
PS when you crash in the outback alone you quickly feel that you are part of the food chain. That clears your head rather quickly, especially at night.

It's bug net season in the Santa Anas... :gag: By July, they should be strong enough to carry off small children.

I figured I'd get one more ride in before Rwanda on Saturday. I let my buddy Tony lead the way since he didn't ride yesterday. It was a similar route to what I did yesterday with a few more miles and a little more elevation. So far I have just over 262 miles and just under 33k feet of elevation for the past 6 days. I'll "rest" tomorrow and hopefully be good to go on Saturday.

edit: i was wondering why i didnt see the pics...
Second try, had no patience to deal with disappearing pics (issue on my side) last night.

Chiquito again with @sir crashalot. That trail beats me up but I keep going back. First time on it with the Megatrail, it was fantastic, and confidence inspiring. Maybe too much so. Big thanks to the Warrior Society for brushing a couple miles from Chiquito falls towards the Candy Store.

One mishap, a drop/roller I've done before and got non-chalant about it and off line, and realized my front was going to miss the roll out and go in a hole. I lifted up hard and landed the chainring on a rock. The chain broke shortly after. Putting a new chain on today, I see the chainring is complete toast, bent to ell and a broke tooth. Thinking about putting my old taco bash guard on (haven't used it since the 2x days), but not sure that would have survived either (sure don't want broken iscg tabs)

Awsome you rolled out of that, scary to watch. I wouldve been dead.
Superdave Osborne!
I had two mishaps, offcamber slideout at teh start, and a plow straight into the bushes near the end.

Waterfall pic is for you @herzalot

TNBSSR... Five Santa Cruz bikes headed up... Two single speeds, one borrowed Hightower with interesting pedals, a Tallboy and a plastic Highball... Bees, snakes, warm temps, no drama. It felt good to be on the single speed again. And it was silent. :inlove:

Coming down, @mtnbikej led mini Professor down Booby Trap. Booby Trap is still there, but it's hard to tell in most spots with the overgrowth. Throw in some kitty litter and deep ruts, and it was an interesting run. o_O :D On a positive note, the new Rekons rolled predictably well, and held the line in the kitty litter.

Hmmmmm, can't view the last two photos for some reason. Ohhh @Mikie ?
This is what happened to me, I figured my pic files were scrambled or something. I went in on my phone and all is well, back on the computer and 2 of 4 ok, back out and back in, then none ok. Still doing it and for other's posts too. Chrome?

Oh yeah, when I was originally setting it up to post I got this error message:

Yep... Same here for the last couple days. Pictures load one minute and not the next. Methinks the database is hanging on by a thread. I also periodically get the "Insufficient Storage" redirect when trying to view pages.

Save us, @Mikie Wan Kenobi. You're our only hope.

None of the pics are coming through @Mikie

Yeah, I'm working it.
Work has had me bogged down.
Be patient, we will get it fixed.
