I Rode My Bike Today...

I was also out in Oaks Tuesday evening, solo. It had been a while. Ran into an equestrian before the drop on Hawk, that was unexpected (for me), but I had plenty of time to stop, & wait for the all clear.
10.6/1900
Laguna last night... saw an unleashed dog walker toss a bag of dog crap to the side of West Ridge... I made the comment, "That is a nice place to put that" as I rode by... her & the manchild with her proceeded to yell at my friends behind me as they passed.
I missed Ruthie F, only to find my other favorite fellow park users the next day. :(

Lol stubborn approach, love that username!! I want to get this right. So when you come across someone on a horse, you stop ahead? So not to spook them?? And wait for an all clear?

I am not used to being around horses, but I wait for the person on horseback to give me a sign that they are taking their right of way, or would like me to pass first. Since this was on single track, I walked by giving the horse as much room as possible when the owner told me it was ok to pass.

Bells.

Buy one, use one. They help immensely.

Got it!! Thanks!

Most horse owners are really cool... Throw out a compliment about "the beautiful horse" and they usually melt, even if they were grumpy to start. Same with dog owners... They can't help but be polite if you blow smoke up their asses about how beautiful Fido is. :p :Roflmao

Mr. Stubborn Approach nails it... The horses have the right of way, but on top of that, you don't want to surprise them. Make sure they know you're there, and 99 times out of a 100, the owner will quickly make the situation safe to pass.

When you meet the 1 exception to the rule, you'll know it. And nothing you do will make the situation better. :devilish:

Yep, I ALWAYS come to a stop well ahead of horseback riders and wait for them to pass or until they confirm it is ok to pass (9/10 it’s the latter). Never once had an issue out at Oaks or anywhere else for the matter. If coming from behind I will make myself known from afar to get their attention, screw Strava times!

In fact I stopped and met/chatted with a member here who rides horses while I was coming down lower Goat at Oaks while she was riding up.

Speaking of Oaks, I’ll report back soon to this thread because I am going out there now!

Went old school today. With my Niner getting a new wheel built (cuz fat guys are hard on wheels) before Bikerpelli, I pulled out my 2012 Ellsworth Moment. 26x2.25 tires, 2x10 gearing, 720mm bar width and no dropper post!! Thing climbs like a scalded cat.

Anyway, I rode all fire road, 2N49 to 2N59. 14.2 miles and 2200’ of climbing. This starts on the west side of Silverwood Lake. Saw a park ranger who told me to watch out for the mountain lion They had multiple sightings of a male cub in the past week. Saw his tracks, but no cat. Did see a couple large doe, though.

Looking west toward Baldy.

I played a little hooky this morning and went out at Aliso. Weekday mornings at the coastal parks are very nice. Warm sunny morning with only couple other bikes out and handful of hikers. Bike was making noises again in drive train and bottom bracket. (At the shop now getting dialed) Rode up to TOW and down through the mustard tunnel on Meadows. Back up the gut for a quick Lynx run. 11, 1530'
Parking ticket waiting for me back at truck near Canyon View Park. Street sweeping 1st/3rd Thursday. Only one sign a block away. $48 well spent for a morning out on the trail and not at work.

Most horse owners are really cool... Throw out a SINCERE compliment about "the beautiful horse" and they usually melt, even if they were grumpy to start. Same with dog owners... They can't help but be polite if you GENUINELY CONFIDE about how beautiful Fido is. :p :Roflmao

Fixed... :cautious:

Actually, horses quickly register you are a human once you start talking. At least that is what a couple of horse folks told me.

Quick ride at Oaks to get my blood flowing, have the day off tomorrow so hoping to get a decent ride in if my body cooperates. Heart rate was higher than I like it to be but sustainable. The mustard whacking my arms is a bit annoying but I guess it’s better than complaining about needing rain.

Been very stressed out lately and it’s taken a toll on me. I’ve lost 5lbs and my work belts are on the last hole.

Warming up out there.. Pic I posted in the other riding live thread (definitely wasn’t 108 but warm in the sun):

Got a 90 minute in at Hulda a couple days ago...Pinball is pretty sweet!

2/3 out and back Exploration (99 percent snow free, all downed trees cleared for the part I did) then an hour at Skypark (Arrow, Jumpline, Evergreen “black” line, Jumpline, Arrow)

Got the most obscure height comment I’ve ever gotten by a lady in the gift shop on the way out: “you look like one of the Nephilim!” Have definitely not gotten that one before...so points for creativity and not just the typical air up there stuff!

Oh yeah...OG metal Smash FTW!

Best comedy series of all time, IMO! (OG only, although New is still better than most, and close second to Rick and Morty)

You like my free-association moment up there, eh!!!

A.D. is absolute perfection. Episodic comedic television cannot be improved upon in my opinion. Veep comes close, and I'll miss that when it's over, but it's a lot meaner than A.D. was. Nah, come to think of it, while I like Veep a lot, not even close to A.D.

How is Pinball? I've been meaning to ride it, but the original wasn't fun for me with the real steep transitions/switchbacks. I've never been on the realignment that SS built up. The new bike has given me hella' confidence to ride Return, and the steep drop portion of that used to freak me out like crazy. I still stop at the drop in portion and get my ducks lined up, but at least I ride it w/out pucker now...

I like it...they rerouted it a bit and put in some bridge things at the beginning which allow you to keep speed better. One of the wallrides is slightly blown right now so is a little sketchy. Overall some good flow...

Drove back down to Nevada for the mystery trail that the weaz and I happened upon while hiking.

The dirt road that might normally be ridden up to gain the upper trail was closed, so it made sense that we saw two riders pushing bikes up the trail. It looked like you’d hit the snow in just a couple-few miles, but I was out for some exercise, so the steep HAB worked for me.

Cross the tracks and a river first.

Steep berms.

This spot was attention-getting on the way down, but the runout (shown below) was chill and traction was endless.

Up the trail until snow drifts started appearing.

(The intermittently snow covered trail does continue up that hill and back a ways.)

On my way up, a local rider stopped and chatted. The trail is nine years old and still somewhat underground, so I’m keeping with the local DL MO.

Hiking my bike up two miles/2600' took me well over an hour. Down in :14 (going much slower than the trail was designed to be ridden, I’m sure); I rolled many of the drops and rode very conservatively. Nice little workout on a nice day with few around…score. :)
