Canfield does some of the shortest chainstays on 29er.... 16.3", on a 140mm travel bike. I wouldn't mind giving one a spin though every 29 I've ridden feels way too big, esp the wheelbase, maybe this one would feel different. And they're blowing out the 2017 frames, $999 . They are not made in the US like GG is though...

Two times down the Vista DH and the ends of Live Oak... Three little drops at the end, and then I see the horse coming around the corner, not 20 feet ahead. Thankfully she was nice, and put the beast in reverse.

Sadly, the flattening of the Tijeras Creek Trail and the removal of all those pesky rocks has continued up the part of Live Oak that Rwanda uses. Easily cleanable on a road bike now. Fortunately they left the two short sections alone... Probably because they can't fit their Bobcat of death in there with the twists and little drops.

Oh... And another quick link. This one lasted since last summer. Whacked the left knee and right shin when it let loose. :devilish:

12/1700... Saving the legs for Sunday.

I hadn't realized this had turned into a tire thread. On my 29" wheelset I am using Maxxis 29×2.35 Forekasters. I have to say I am simply amazed at how well they work and how durable they have been. I believe I have close to 1,000 miles on them and the back is at about 50% tread left. That is when I usually replace a tire. These work so well I will probably wait until there are cords showing.

Now for today's ride report. I woke up and my buddy Tony had texted me saying he wasn't feeling good for today's ride so I decided to head over into Cheeseboro. Well that was until I closed the garage door and decided I didn't know where I wanted to go. After a couple of minutes I decided to do something similar to yesterday's Devil's Canyon ride but from home. I retraced Tuesday's route but left out Chivo to save my legs in case I wanted to do something on the backside of my ride. The turnoff to Devil's Canyon is between Las Llajas and Seashells. Just a short fire road before the turn off to Devil's Canyon. Today I was by myself and was able to keep the throttle on all the way to the bottom. Not one other person. I swear this is one of the most fun trails I have been on in a long time. I may even go back and do it again Sunday with Jennifer. I worked my way over to a bypass route that takes me to the top of Stagecoach. At the bottom of Stagecoach I ran into my buddy Tony. He was feeling better and decided to meet me along my route. From there it's basically road, fire roads and the occasional singletrack to get back home. I actually feel worked today. Right now I'm at 201.4 miles and 28,191' since last Friday. It may be a while before I top this week's MTB stats. View attachment 36607 View attachment 36608 View attachment 36606
If you are coming up from Devils are we talking the freight road, the devils slide, or Stagecoach below the Simi side of Lilac lane?

Voodoo Tom and I rode our bikes. Did the Old Ridge Route from Castaic to the Golden Eagle Trailhead via 8N08. Total cruiser out and back.

WOW!!! Looking at the mileage, I was thinking you guys wouldnt be home until tomorrow morning. Seems like you guys zoomed right through it. Outstanding. Of course I have to ask, did you guys hit any of the ST once you reached GE?

Couple pics from today...

Only a mile or so in to the ride and already time for a pitstop:Roflmao:Roflmao:Roflmao

We could not have asked for better weather and there are some great views along the way.

Mikie's Hightower with "roadie ish 29x2.2 Ikons and my Ripley with 2.35 Hans Dampfs. Man I still absolutely love that Ripley, its a great bike for so many things and am blessed to have the stable I have.

Casa Lupitas for the finale. It was awesome to sleep in and get home early and bag a nice long ride like this.

Awesome fun day!

My wife and I were sitting in our car at Sandberg enjoying a post-ride beer when you two rolled through at your turn-around point. You weren't wasting any time! "Ready to roll? Yep, let's go." No messing around! I felt a bit lame thinking about all the miles you guys had ahead of you. Nice work! Sure was a perfect day out there today.

No way now I wish we woulda stopped. It's just hard to get rolling again if you take too many breaks on a long ride like this. Welcome @JimN and I hope you had a great day on Golden Eagle. That trail is kind of our pride & joy and we ride it quite often. Love to ride it with you sometime.

Greer Ranch, AKA 215EC trails. What a hoot. This place was way crowded. The secret is out. Never seen so many riders. The good thing is it’s all singletrack so you do not run into people. Rode with T-2 and new riding buddy Austin who works marketing at Troy Lee. 13 miles 2000 elevation.

Thanks, Tom. I feel the same way on epic adventures like that. Definitely best to keep moving. Those type of rides can be brutal with a largish group of riders of varying average speeds.

Golden Eagle was fantastic today! I've been riding that trail since the mid-90s. I remember back then, it probably only existed due to the moto users, and it was still horribly overgrown often times. It's obviously seeing much more love and care these days, I assume thanks to folks like you. What a gem! Feels like a real backcountry experience, even though you're never really that far from civilization.

My ride log records tell me that this was the first time I've ridden Golden Eagle in over seven years. I have no idea why. I make the trip to Pinos at least once a year, and in my opinion, Golden Eagle is a much better ride. Definitely game to ride it with you sometime.

Yikes man 7 years since you last rode GE I'm pretty sure that's a crime. Glad you enjoyed it. GE is pretty much our home trail and yes we (& a few others) have put some work in to it to keep it in the shape it is now. Reading your post makes it all worth while though. I gotta say just keep an eye on the trailhead invites and join in on some rides. Some of em are last minute choices with only a couple guys and others are well attended by our black & blue wrecking crew of hooligans. We try to ride something different pretty much every week and not afraid to travel for the goods.

Recovery ride today down through Whiting Ranch and along the dirt bike trail to the skatepark, then down Lake Forest Boulevard to the transmission shop where my 96 Tacoma (w/ 300,000+ miles) only needed a new shift solenoid instead of complete remanufactured replacement. Runs like new!

Three (3) rides yesterday.. First riding (the long climb) home from the transmission shop on city streets. Second, late morning (up and down) commute to work in painter clothes/tennies/flats. Third ride, evening into dark (down and up) commute home from job site. Took it easy in the morning, a little harder on the way to work, and some minor-league hammering on the way home. 22+ miles/elevation unknown.

Most importantly, all on the Ripley with Hans Dampf on front and random something or other on back. Switching to Ikons now that I didn't need to sink 3 grand into the truck.

Would have loved to have hopped on this one. I've always wanted to ride this historic route.

Tried San Clemente Singletracks today for my first (and maybe last?) time. It was fun, but not much to it - at least what we rode. Lots of swoopy smooth stuff. I can see that there are many hidden and not-so-hidden techy lines and jump lines that may warrant further exploration. Scott and I sessioned one section that had four features - a drop, step-up jump, a kicker jump and a rock drop. That was fun, but I am too chickenshit to hit kickers with the speed required. I need practice! I'm fine on the drops.

We took a little detour trail trying to find an innovative way back to the car. After a bit of a nerve-wracking long skinny bridge over a pond, we were nearly attacked by a mt. lion. He did pose for a selfie with us, before he attacked. I've never seen a mt. lion look so much like a cheetah before!

Here's Juli (of Santiago Oaks helicopter rescue fame) enjoying the swoop...
