I Rode My Bike Today...

I took my monster cross on Mendenhall ridge on Sunday for the first time since before the Sand Fire. The closure signs are gone and there's an updated map at Bear Divide, but for some reason they haven't put the updated notice online. The road's in great condition, most of the side-wall slashing rock gardens are gone, even 700x32s would probably be okay up there right now. It looks like the grading went down into Pacoima Canyon, unfortunately I was only able to go in about 10 miles before running out of time and turning around.

What kinda' bike is that, and how fat a tire will it fit?

I wanted to check out the Oakmont trails that @Cyclotourist always mentions. So after riding Crafton Hills Loop ,went over to Oakmont and did a scouting ride. Some nice single track over there. I'll definitely have to go back and ride more of it!

I know that view! I was out there there this afternoon, and noticed a single set of tracks meandering about! Looked like someone was exploring it a bit!

My phone locked up mid-ride, the second time in a few months, so I only have about half of my ride, and unfortunately no pics :-(

It's a chinese carbon CM-057, one of the best selling and well reviewed chiner frames out there. There are reports of a 27.5 x 2.8 fitting depending on the tire/rim combo. I'd like to bikepack this bike so it's something I've looked into but I'd like to be able to do some test-fitting without spending too much money. I think the next upgrade for this bike is a set of these.

Thanks! It looks like a good one, and fitting a + size tire on there is a good trick!

Got a text first thing this morning from my buddy Tony telling me they moved the Devil's Canyon ride to today. Not having enough time to ride from home I met them at the Las Llajas trailhead. I was running a few minutes late so I ended up having to play catch-up. I caught them right at the turnoff to Devil's Canyon. Devil's Canyon starts with a short fire road descent then there's a turnoff for the singletrak. Mostly fast and flowy at the top but then changes to some tight turns with some creek crossings and a couple short trips down a dry rocky creek bed. It's a great trail. From there we just worked our way back over to the starting point hitting Stagecoach along the way. We may incorporate it into a bigger ride tomorrow but with wind in the forecast I may just take a day off.

Went up Space at Sunset. I was passed by a guy with headlights on. Near the top I was passed by another guy with lights on, then another,a couple minutes later a spread out group of four. I got to the top and looked out upon the slope and it was very kinetic the first guy was leaving the main slope on the fast downhill and the others were all spread out across the switchbacks each moving this way and that. Very cool view
Happy night trails on Space

I can guarantee there won't be an Ardent Race on the back for this one...
Hehe, every advantage helps at the edge of traction... Chameleon will be right in its element. I took my El Mar with a worn 2.2 NN down it...I think that was the end of the NN!

And, by dismount, I mean intentional or not! @littlewave, @DangerDirtyD, @knucklebuster and @sir crashalot got a demonstration... The proud and few... And the Weezl too.

David, it that in the area known as the "badlands"?
Real close to them... pre-bad lands! That area is a bit more south and east, out along the 60 towards Banning. You're looking at Live Oak Cyn (IE iteration). A lot of that land you see in the background is undeveloped state parks land which we're slowly figuring out access for!

That front tire has to go! :stop:
I survived yesterday's ride! As long as I'm not going downhill with it, it works pretty good!!!
I know Minion DHFs are the go-to tire 'round here, but is there a lighter tire that works good on the hard pack & ball bearing surface really well? And can go up to Big Bear, Exploration, SART and hold its own? Do I just need to commit? Eyeing the 2.35 Maxxis Ikon or Ardent Race, but they might be a bit wide for the rims. Fork seals are leaky as well, but that's another posting!

Riding FS is definitely a different skill set than a HT, that's for sure!

There are only two rides that I would throw the Minion on for... Cannell Trail and anything with @mike . :p That Race King (I think) was the one that I cut the sidewall in a Temecula Race. It has bad JuJu. I only threw it on there so there was something on the wheel... Even Conti says that's a "rear only" race tire. They're practically slicks when they're new.

I had a 2.4 Mountain King on the front the last time I rode it, and it was a riot. I'd bet anything in that genre would be fine for you on your local stuff... Ardent, Mountain King, Nobby Nic, etc.

I'm partial to the NN and Schwalbe in general, but I need a minimum order to make it work out when buying from Bike24. Maxxis is good for one-off tires from Jenson. Ardents are looking good!

Agree....Yeager is it's own animal....but the penalty for failure is on the lower side. Now that the bottom was rerouted...gone are the sharp rocks that guarantee skin loss. The rest of the trail has enough dirt and brush to save your hide in the event of an unplanned dismount. Fun, but steep.

I hadn't realized this had turned into a tire thread. On my 29" wheelset I am using Maxxis 29×2.35 Forekasters. I have to say I am simply amazed at how well they work and how durable they have been. I believe I have close to 1,000 miles on them and the back is at about 50% tread left. That is when I usually replace a tire. These work so well I will probably wait until there are cords showing.

Now for today's ride report. I woke up and my buddy Tony had texted me saying he wasn't feeling good for today's ride so I decided to head over into Cheeseboro. Well that was until I closed the garage door and decided I didn't know where I wanted to go. After a couple of minutes I decided to do something similar to yesterday's Devil's Canyon ride but from home. I retraced Tuesday's route but left out Chivo to save my legs in case I wanted to do something on the backside of my ride. The turnoff to Devil's Canyon is between Las Llajas and Seashells. Just a short fire road before the turn off to Devil's Canyon. Today I was by myself and was able to keep the throttle on all the way to the bottom. Not one other person. I swear this is one of the most fun trails I have been on in a long time. I may even go back and do it again Sunday with Jennifer. I worked my way over to a bypass route that takes me to the top of Stagecoach. At the bottom of Stagecoach I ran into my buddy Tony. He was feeling better and decided to meet me along my route. From there it's basically road, fire roads and the occasional singletrack to get back home. I actually feel worked today. Right now I'm at 201.4 miles and 28,191' since last Friday. It may be a while before I top this week's MTB stats.

Sack up and mount a Minion. You’ll get a better workout and speed up when it counts.
