I DIDN'T Ride My Bike Today, Cuzz....

Jennifer and I took the puppy for a 3.5 mile hike near Wildwood.

Got a call from the Po Po last night at 12:35 am. Someone or two someone's had flocked two rooms of a public facility with fire extinguishers, setting off fire alarms and making a huge mess. This morning was spent investigating. This afternoon, my daughter and I spent time with a co-worker's 6 yo daughter in hospital receiving chemo... The girls dressed up as reindeer and went through the hospital halls pulling a wagon full of presents singing Rudolf, to the delight of the nurses and other patients, bringing the IV stand along for the ride, of course. She's been receiving chemo, radiation and surgery since last June, yet was singing, dancing and playing with my daughter, whom she's never met until today. Tomorrow, she has surgery to re-install the mainline tubing that came out prior to our arrival. I cannot comprehend how tired of the endless procedures, pain and sickness she must feel, yet you couldn't see it on her face or in her demeanor.

No, I didn't ride today, but I have never felt more fortunate. Cranking up the prayer machine once again. If you believe in any higher power, throw a prayer up for a little 6 yo girl named Taylor.

You're a good man, Herr Herz...

Because I'm in China.

The wife and I spent two days in Beijing on a mini-vacation prior to getting stuck in this smoke filled office in Shanghai for a week and a half.

Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. Standing on the ruins of 'tower 0' looking around the countryside. It was kind of hazy that day as you can see.

One of many pictures, but the wife has most of them as she took the big beefy camera and I just had my iPhone. It was cold, so I kept it in my pocket mostly and let her do the bulk of the picture work :P.

I won't ride tomorrow, either. Of all the luck - I have jury duty tomorrow, at the Fullerton Courthouse. Which as most of you know is the "official" starting point for the - wait for it - Fullerton Loop!!!!

Any other time and weather and I'd throw the bike in the back of the truck, get out of jury duty early, and hit the FLoop. But it's way too wet right now. I'd be fighting the green mud.:(

Went up to Rim Nordic to try Nordic skiing. The boy and I did 5+ miles 400'+ of climb. Had a great time learning together. Rock climbing gym on Monday so not going to ride then either.

Is Nordic skiing what I grew up calling "cross country"? That was my winter sport in snow country... I used to start from the house, and head out for miles. Sometimes onto frozen Lake Erie...

I still think that was one of the best workouts there is...

Yes, but XC does not come up on Strava. I had a hard time believing it was XC when we were skiing on groomed roads. Definitely feeling the effects this morning.

Cuzz I had some top secret work to do in the garage for a certain soon to be 10 year old (on Sunday) kid who calls me dad...

It was about a 2 beer project although I could have milked it for more but I'm riding with Mikie and others in the morning on what he calls an "adventure" ride starting in the middle of nowhere and ending closer to my house so I figured I better behave if I wan't to make it home in one piece...

The bike is made by a company named Trailcraft and is a scaled down version of a bike many of us would be happy to ride...

It's the real deal with chainstay protectors and bashguards...

And it looks good parked next to his old mans bike...

Trailcraft is a company owned by a mother named Ginger who was frustrated with the offerings for high quality kids bikes that don't weigh a ton. This bike as it sits weighs right at 22lbs and she has some higher zoot builds that go around 18lbs but I didn't win the powerball jackpot. The specialized Hardrock he currently rides weighs 34lbs as do most kids bikes(and he weighs about 70lbs). The kid will grow out of it quickly and I'll probably lose a bunch of money but guess what I don't care. It is a true work of art built by an American company. Ginger was an absolute pleasure to deal with and she knows her stuff and builds a quality product. Pops may not be getting a new bike anytime soon but I can't wait to see the smile on the kids face on Sunday morning. Ride report with more pics to follow later this weekend.

...and after getting the obligatory smartass beer quip out of my system, thanks for this post. Those of us with kidlets all wonder the same thing - why do their small bikes have to weigh as much as a 2005 era DH bike? True, the bike I just bought my daughter only cost $200 new, but I'd pay more for a lighter, better build.

Have fun with your kiddo this weekend! Looking forward to the pics.

I took my daughter to Big Bear to spend one last night in my sister-in-law's cabin that they had to sell. :( My wife had a ton of work to do for her business, so we got out of her way to let her concentrate without us underfoot.

We sledded in the backyard yesterday, and went to Snow Summit for some skiing today. The lesson SUCKED! She stood around for nearly a full hour and a half with less than a minute of actual sliding on skis. She wasn't complaining, but after dropping $110, I was furious. I expressed my opinion with management, including the fact that the first time she skied, two years ago when she was 3 (at Ski Cooper, CO), she was doing run after run on the magic carpet lift stopping, turning and having a great time on a relatively long run.

Consequently, the last 30 minutes she was taken to the magic carpet lift where she finally got to actually ski with the instructor. She loved it, and that 30 minutes erased the previous hour and a half of standing around waiting for ten seconds of skiing. Thank deity.

I am grateful for the ten years of having a place to lay my head at Big Bear, and all of the mt. biking access provided. I am also thankful that my daughter is chill!

Thanks for this! 100% my thoughts on kid bikes. So damn heavy. The build looks really solid and well thought out on that as well.

BTW, Islabike is supposed to be pretty good as well. My kids are all onto 26" bikes which is such a relief. Especially as I can find great used bikes now!

I haven't been riding since the 30th of December; my China trip lasted too long, and then when I hit the ground back in the states I've been working 110 hour weeks due to a product launch and being at the center of that storm. I'm hoping to finally get back out on my bike briefly this weekend, although I'm sad I'm going to miss another "OC visits GE" ride; I probably have lost a lot of my legs with my time off the bike, and I can't be that far away from work should things go sideways this weekend.

:cry::cry:
