Lügenpresse...

Sadly, there are now multiple versions of the "news" to choose from. And what is worse is that many people get their information from non-news sources. I read an interesting article that 12% of online Americans cited the Daily Show as a place they got their news.

In an age of biased news reporting, I find that it is better to go to the source material and draw my own conclusions, than wait for it to be filtered through an intermediary and distilled down to a 10 second sound bite.

On this, we agree.

Speaking of non news sources, I listen to Fox News and switch to CNN and back again on my commute. Or I used to when I had a commute. It was "intriguing" to say the least. Sean Hannity, Chris Cuomo, Tucker Carlson, Don Lemon, Laura Ingraham, back and forth. Oh let's not forget Morning Joe!

I dare you all to try it. Take some Dramamine first. Or maybe Plaquenil. Dr. Trump says you have nothing to lose! o_O

Been there, done that. Burned the t-shirt. KFI's John & Ken hyperfreak vs NPR's snoozefest. Finally gave up on both. I just look at raw data. Like Sweden vs Europe. Sweden averages 40% telecommuting, ROE (Rest of Europe) does not. Sweden not hammered. ROE hammered.

NYC is hammered and LA is not. Some news outlets can't figure that out. It really is as simple as living cheek by jowl, stacked like cordwood, makes virii spread like, well, virii.

Deny that if you wish. It won't chamge the fact that high density housing is stupid on so many levels.

I can't. I tried it. It's like listening to the Costanza family. All the men yell bitterly and the women are shrill and annoying.
I turn it off and I feel used, dirty. I need to vape some weed just to feel normal.o_O

Ugh. Cable ”news”-who am I supposed to hate today? let’s pick a channel and hate who they hate. That will be good for our souls...

the only thing worse is social media-let’s pick someone to hate and gang up on them.

sounds loopy, but when I’m traveling, the simple approach of the free USA Today in the hotel is refreshing. It’s written at a grade school level but dang it if they don’t just tell you all the important stuff that happened, without telling you how to overreact...

There have been many posts in this thread that declare that other things are more deadly than the current pandemic, like the flu for example. (I do not argue those data).

There have been many posts in this thread that explain the economic consequences of closing down businesses and shutting down social gatherings and interactions, including the collateral damage of joblessness, homelessness, despair and suicide - and the economic consequences of the (over-reaching) stimulus package approved by Congress and the president.

So I am just curious at this point - if we as a nation are over-reacting, what is the proper approach to Coronavirus / COVID 19 / SARS v2? What better solution has been explained or implied by those who feel we have been and are currently over-reacting?

I have been declared too stupid to understand.

We are damned if do.....we are damned if we don't.

It's a no win situation.

The question comes down to what's more important.........

Money or lives?
People that say this is killing the economy, but willing to let people die, are too greedy.
People that say save the lives, even at the expense of the economy, don't care about everyone else that isn't sick.

Are we overreacting......hard to say. It's not like we have been through this before.

Absolutely. I raise the question because I am pretty skeptical of anything the government tells me :)

If you haven't yet, you might enjoy seeing the list of the winners and losers of the $2 trillion aid package. Interestingly, only about 5% goes directly to hospitals for emergency supplies and equipment.

The Aid package was never supposed to be for hospitals. Somehow the the top 1% will seem to come out better than the rest of us.

Google “Stanford Covid Herd Mentality Study”. They have a theory that the virus was here in CA in late Fall 2019 and many of us were already exposed as it spread. Consequently, many of us have built up an immunity. It’s one theory why CA is doing so well compared to NY.

There’s several other theories being pushed out there so I always wait for the END RESULT FALLOUT before buying into any current news stories. Being in law enforcement, I saw how the news spun stories to get them to blow up....and had the story wrong from square one.

I’m currently in another state and saw numerous hikers and bikers out and about today. Didn’t see a single mask yet....including on the restaurant employees tonight. However, all the restaurants are take out or delivery only. Unlike CA, I can still use my own re-fill cup and get my own soft drink at the gas stations.

Double dog dare? Well all you covidiots (not meant as a personal attack although that seems to be fair game now) hey we're all in this together and maybe getting a little edgy, so here is a long meandering path to an actual semi-, ok, not so-, relevant post.

When I took a break from shoveling snow today, I came inside and realized the power was out. Guess Edison didn't do a good enough job on trimming the trees/limbs away from the power lines (since complaining about everything seems to be the theme these days). The heavy wet snow was really weighing things down today. So I throw some wood on the fire in the fireplace to try to dry and warm my cold wet digits, and I grab the old transistor radio because what else do you do when you have no internet access? Technically I could have used the 4G data on the phone, but battery was running low and didn't know how long this outage was gonna last before I could recharge.

Scrolling through the channels (the old analog dial tuner, remember those?) the first semi strong, non-stat icy AM station I get is Rush, and no, not the band. I had actually never listened to this guy before, and technically still haven't I guess, since I was pretty focused on warming my toes and fingers and a little delirious from the shoveling workout (moving a couple feet of wet snow is hard work especially at altitude). But I did hear him say something about the Pope saying covid is punishment for global warming and how dare he, on Good Friday, what's the world coming to... Sounded like the guy was very confident that he knew his stuff. He started taking call-in questions, some were quite odd in a Godwin's law kinda way (I just learned that one, thanks Sassy).

Then the power came on and I shut the radio off and got back on the internet to hear/read the real news from 26 sources that I don't trust.

I think the dogs are getting on each other's nerves, cabin or some other kind of fever? (no they aren't running a temperature as far as you, and I, know). This is all tongue firmly in cheek in case you can't tell, (and also, I'm sure you can tell, I like parenthesis, and commas, too, of course). Hang in there ya'll it'll be over in a few months or maybe next year or when we can test everyone 10 times or we get a vaccine and people quit eating pangolins.

TL/DR:

When you first mentioned "herd mentality" I was thinking about the panic buying of toilet paper.

After hearing about @Danimal's illness, and witnessing both my wife and daughter's versions of the flu over Christmas, wondering if maybe, just maybe...

This is good. It could have done without the political swipe toward the end, even if there is basis, and while I agree that the government has done great harm to the credibility of the media, the media hasn't done itself any favors either. But the broader takeaways in this are quite poignant. Power to the people, and stuff.

Complete bullshit. The media has ruined their own credibility 110%. Their blatant favoritism and refusal to even report certain news stories that don’t fit their agenda is appalling.

Meh. Expect more of this opportunistic radical BS from both left and right.

Note to authors: If you use the word gaslighting, I’m going to call a Godwin foul and ignore you. This was from the left, I’ve seen plenty of if from the right. It’s a cheap way to get clicks without having to write much.

I do agree and have said earlier that this is an unprecedented opportunity to reset both our personal priorities and our priorities as a nation. Do we need multi-million dollar athletes? Do we need to commute to work? Do we need schools and all of the social bullshit that comes with them? Do we need gym memberships? Do we need Starbucks? Do we like clean air? And I do agree with the author/editorialist, we will be convinced by government officials, commercial media and perhaps even "news" media that maybe none of this really happened and let's get back to normal as soon as possible. After all, some would rather host a political rally than a press conference.

I also disagree with the author on some points. I think commercial and political interests will continue to use images of this time to keep us scared, to keep us buying products for personal protection (drugs, vitamins, home schooling, home exercise equipment, air and water filters, security systems, firearms and related accoutrement, food storage solutions and probably even bidets or fancy $1000 Japanese toilet seats (yes, please!)) and to push agendas with the tagline "never again." A ton of new legislation will be proposed to prevent or protect, and perhaps existing organizations will rise in priority again (CDC, WHO, etc). But our natural tendency is to want to return to patterns of normalcy - so we may strive to return as quickly as possible to caring about the Angels/Dodgers and high school sports, and the routines we used to have on say March 1, 2020.

As for sports, if I had not seen on the news they cancelled the sports seasons I would never have known. It effects me not.

I used to work at the LA Times and sat in on the daily newsroom meetings. Though there was bias, there was also a ton of integrity. Sadly, I fear the old school newspaper journalists have been driven out of the business - by us. I think the Wall Street Journal still does a pretty good job, and I subscribe to the Economist, which also does a pretty job and let's face it - because they are based out of the UK they don't have as much skin in the game.

So it makes no difference to you - but will our "forced pause" make a difference for the millions of obsessed fans who spend a tremendous amount of their emotional energy, time and money rooting for a particular team? Will anyone of them wake up to the ridiculousness of that pursuit? I am simultaneously hopeful and doubtful.
