Beware of SNAKES !

I've been eyeballing a trapped rattler for about a week now. It had gotten down into the flood control channel at our City Park and it was only a matter of time before some idiot threw a big rock on it's head from above. I was planning to climb down into the channel to scoop up the snake but the area is super busy with trail and park users and like most flood control channels, it is clearly posted that big fines and jail time come to those who are caught in there. I lowered my uber-long handled net down and tapped the snake gently. In a daze, it crawled right into the net and I lifted it up and out of the channel. It barely rattled. I was expecting it to be furious like large rattlers usually are but this one is rather timid. I lowered it into a 5 gal bucket and snapped on a cover. I will take it up Whiting Woods a little later today for release. It's super fat, quite pretty for a rattler pushing 4 feet and still very timid. I feel good about this. What type is this @SnakeCharmer ?
 
Rolled past a small rattler this am. Just dropping in on the Gabrielino from Red Box and I cruised past a dark blob buzzing away. Freaked out @redwoods too. I went back up to take a look and that 3 footer was heading straight down the trail towards me. Attitude!
Very dark green/black with almost clear rattle.
Be aware out there.

Just about f@cking pooped myself. It was a very interesting color tho.
 
Saw this beautiful snake on the side of the road near the entrance at Irvine Park yesterday. I believe he's a racer.
Unfor he was not in good shape, burning on the hot tarmac and barely able to move. Looks like he got ran over,
a flat spot in the middle of the body. The ranger had left for the day, all I could do was moved
him to the grass in the shade. I've never seen one up close, only racing across once in a blue moon.
Before the fire, met a small western racer in the middle of the trail and moved him into the bushes.
2 racer sightings but wished I didn't see the 2nd one...

That’s a Red Racer, aka, Red Coachwhip.

Total craziness. It would seem that the desert snake species to the East are taking refuge in da OC. Pretty soon there’s gonna be Gila Monsters crawling on Laguna Beach. o_O:rolleyes:
