California King Snake!

Saw my first Gila Monster since I’ve been out here today. He was chilling on the side of the fire road but cruised up into the brush when I stopped.

And that there in lays the problem. They chew and chew and chew. Their jaws lock and the bite is considered extremely painful due to the clamping force.

I moved a big ass rattler off of the FR this morning in Cherry Canyon. What a fatty!

I forgot my phone today so no pics.

I assume you used the SnakeCharmer method and not the stomp method. You probably picked it up and gave it a friendly belly rub and a name.

Night snake, mildly venomous, not dangerous to humans. Good natural pest control. A small species, 18" maximum length, I believe.

Interesting. A species I’d not heard of before. Wiki says a Mexican species.

They are actually quite common but generally nocturnal so they are seldom seen.

I used to have a pet Chuckwalla as a youngster in addition to way too many snakes. He was soooo chill, just eating wild mustard flowers and carrots. One day, completely out of the blue, he chomped onto my thumb. None of us wanted to hurt the little guy, but we couldn't get him to let loose. Finally, we put an ice cube on his head and he immediately let go. My thumb turned that ugly blurple color and I lost my nail. I equate it to slamming a car door on your thumb. Ahh, those were the days - catching reptiles and raging on our Stingrays.

Anyone else noticed Tarantula Hawks everywhere!

Gotta say one of the few Beastie that kinda wig me.. they seem to fly over and check me out...
