Who's Riding Where???

SLO on Thursday with my wife. Leaning towards Montana De Oro. Any trails routes I should hit, or avoid? Wife hasn't been on the bike much in the last 6 months due to injury, but has maintained a high level of fitness. Are trails over there relatively tame as far as tech goes?
I’ve never been to Montana de Oro, but I suspect the trails are mild judging by the people who indicate the place is good for MTB.

Would be interested in what you find in SLO especially Montana De Oro. I am going next month and also I am curious what the riding is like

SLO riding is good but not great. It's the scenery and fresh air that sets it apart from down here. MdO is as good as anywhere else up there but it's hard to make loops that don't suck the life out of you from all the steep uphills to tackle. Rolling down the trails at speed with the Pacific right there almost close enough to touch is what makes that place special. The beaches and coast line in the Park are spectacular though. Spend some time checking it out. Mostly XC trails but there is a few chunky exceptions. For me, just being on the Central Coast is the best part. I miss that place.

MDO is awesome, but lots of climbing. But fun when you turn around. Hazard Peak to East Boundry trail is the standard ride. I like Oates Peak, it’s a 6 mile climb with a 6 mile descent. You can hit the Bluff trail for a beautiful cool down ride along the cliffs.

Johnson Ranch is an easy 3 mile loop, but you can add to it with the Irish Hills add on.

The Pismo Preserve is an easy ride, but lots of climbing. Views are awesome also.

I wouldn’t hit TV towers or Madonna mountain very rocky and would worry about crashing, and we wouldn’t want that.

But anyway you look at it, there’s a lot of climbing , if you need anything else you can DM me or text me @ 661-616-8010

This actually sounds perfect. We're not so much going to ride, but we're going so we're taking the bikes. The vibe to effort ratio sounds right up her alley.

I'm heading up to San Francisco in the next couple weeks... My dream would be to hang a left on the way home and head toward @mike 's neck of the woods, as I've never been there. But the wife has been sick, so it's probably not in the cards.

I might end up taking a bike for a couple hours of riding... if that. Maybe a stop in SLO on the way home?

Sorry to hear your bride is feeling low. Getting better is job one. Everything else is optional. I hope you can slip in a ride.

No trail recs, but HIGHLY recommend the Firestone Grill in downtown SLO for eats and drinks. Might be my favorite place to eat at. Get there before lunch hour, as the line to order can end up going out to the street.

MDO is not very tech at all. As a matter of fact, the trails on the south side of the campground (oats peak) are very smooth and flowy. Easy to climb up and turn around whenever you want. The bluff trail and spooners cove offer unparalleled central coast views.

Many trails inland or near SLO at this time of year can be warm so the coastal option is a good choice.

I prefer winter riding there. As matter of fact I have a trip planned weekend of MLK holiday with 3 nights in MDO and then 6 nights up in Big Sur riding the gnar - It sure would be cool to get some IMTB brethren up there to join in on the fun.

I love Mike & Robins vids!

Here is a clip of mine showing a bit of the Oats peak trail on the way back down

We'll be camping at Morro Bay state campground next week, mon-thurs night, and have room for another tent. If anyone is able to come up , you're welcome to join! Just a daily charge for your vehicle. Some nice riding up there!!
Fran, you gotta check out Taco Temple while you're there! Kinda pricey, but big portions. Should this be in the Taco Tuesday thread?

Matt, agree with everything Dan said, Esp. the Johnson Ranch -Irish Hills area. If you head a little father north, Cambria's a great place for romantic strolls, wine tasting, AND a wee bit of mellow biking, at Fiscalini Ranch Preserve. Central Coast is the Bomb!

John, love the vid! It reminded me, though, of the scourge that is PO at MdO. Even up on the high ridges, fer crissakes! Matt, have the Dawn soap at the ready when you finish your rides.

Thanks - I don’t take a lot of video, but I feel that one really captures the flow!

No doubt PO is abundant in that area. Lucky for me I don’t react much to the stuff.
There are rides that I do in Big Sur where the PO is absolutely ridiculous and unavoidable (hazmat suit recommended :p)

I’m looking to kick my spurs into the Ranger this week. Friday? The crystal ball knows…

I aim to tack Trail X onto another N. Shore extravaganza. It’ll yield ghastly numbers if I can get it, and my first run on Trail X this year. A bit warm still but there’s a market at 25 miles and ground water at 40.

Santiago Oaks today. It was hot as balls. Only 13'ish miles, but I spent about 20 minutes on the drops and jumps up around the flag. Yucca is a disaster. I did not think the initial trail work was terrible, but it's obvious newbs and/or eBikes have just destroyed it by not knowing how to ride it.

Only two hikers, one off leash dog, one trail runner, six other riders (two eBikes) ... the middle of the day is great for low levels of people, but not so great for the heat and humidity.

Still fun. :p
