Unoffically Official 2017 VQ and CC Thread

I hung it up after Motorway and was happy to do it. :]
Mega props to all that slogged through.

I'm gonna write up my own ride report about my CC experience today but in short I made it all the way. I finished 100/102 but 48 others either turned around or didn't make the cutoffs. Oh, and I didn't have a rear brake (zero) from before Santiago Peak and on. Big thanks to @mtnbikej for helping me at the first aid station and for tailing me down part of HJ making sure I was good.
Congrats on making it through. That was one tough day on the bike.

Just finished cleaning the bikes, Ann's left pedal was fully seized and she's going to need a new bottom bracket. I'll probably need a new BB on my bike too.

If you're interested in the mud, my friend Sandro took some video with his new GoPro from the race.

Yup.....pretty much as I pictured it.

Note to all the racers and organizers: Nice demonstration of LNT. Trabuco Creek, Main Divide between WHT and TC, and HJ all were absent of trash*.

*Except xmas tree ornaments. I know leaving this trash in the forest has been something of a "tradition," but it creates an unsightly mess and straight-up trash. It's time to let it go.

Hey, I was mentioned in the write-up! :D

"By 1:30 the last racers had come through Bear Springs and Jason and I swept the course, following them down Holy Jim and back down Trabuco Wash to the finish line. One hardly soul, undaunted by having only the front brake, made it all the way down Holy Jim in one piece. Following him down the trail, I was impressed with his impressive efforts."

See.....not only did you finish, but you got honorable mention in the write up. Win/Win if you ask me.

Looks like they fixed the date. Oct. 1st 2017.

I'm going to sign up for either CC or VQ, but I've never done them before. I'm concerned about the cut offs times. I've no doubt I can get to the bottom of Silverado/Maple Springs in 4 hours (9:30 cut off). But the next cut offs seem more difficult :
11:30- Maple Springs/Main Divide
12:00- bottom of Holy Jim
12:45 - bottom of West Horse Thief

I'm having a hard time phrasing my questions and concerns here as I haven't had my coffee yet, but I'm assuming one would need to be at Silverado/Maple Springs well before the 9:30 cut off time in order to make the next few cut offs. What time do you guys shoot for? Would 3 hours be a good goal? Maybe 2.5 hours?

I was asking a lot of questions at the beginning of this thread regarding tires etc. Cutoffs weren't that bad for CC, if I could make them with the conditions this year than most people should do fine if they are in decent shape. I even turned around on MS road after the first cutoff and then turned back around to finish ah the race and still made the 2nd cutoff (albeit AT the final cutoff time, but Black Star was a mess this year and ate up time).

Here's my write up of my first CC this year:

It's been said before...

For CC, shorting for 3-3:30 max for Blackstar to bottom of Motorway (Aid Station 1). This gives you 2-2:30 hours to get up Maple Spring to 4 Corners(11:30 cutoff for CC) from there, you have no more time cutoffs.

VQ is a different animal. BS-MW should be 2:45 max. The 11:30 cutoff at 4 Corners doesn't matter....the 12:45 @ bottom of WHT matters.

So check your times From bottom and of MW to Santiago Peak, and your time from Santiago Peak to Holy Jim Parking lot.

You need about 1-1:10 from HJ parking lot to bottom of WHT.

These are all approximations....as some people climb like goats and descend like grannies....where others climb like snails, but descend like banshees.

Thanks for replying, Cornholio. I remember reading this a few months ago. It's one of my favorite ride reports. That is one hell of an accomplishment. The fact that you kept on trucking is so inspiring. The whole reason I want to do VQ is to really test what I'm capable of. The most I've ever climed in a single day is about 5,300. So I've got some work ahead of me.

Thanks for providing a framework, mtnbikej. Eeesh. 2:45 max for BS-MW. That will require some training. I'm going to spend some of the downtime in the office tomorrow digging through this forum

[QUOTE=" That will require some training. [/QUOTE]

VQ " Will require some training" is an understatement.
There is a reason CC sells out much faster than VQ.
For most participants, VQ will be a culmination of months of training.
You should spend the next few weeks (by Oct 1st.) assessing your ability, and your willingness to dedicate the time to build up your endurance.

I don't know if I'll sign up or not... We shall see. In a way it would be cool to check it off the list, and get revenge on the mud course of 2017. But... I really enjoy just doing the bigger rides without the crowd and at my own pace.

We have the Wrightwood 50 coming up, and I really don't feel prepared for that one. One at a time...
