The Fire Thread

This is how it looks from Colorado

Stuck my head out the window this morning when I got up to do a smoke smell check.

Started gagging without 2 seconds. :(
I had pretty much the same experience. It seems thicker than yesterday...
Bummer. FWIW, I just took the dog out and no smoke smell at all. We'll see what the day brings, but currently all is clear(ish) on the Western front.

Dang people, stay safe! Right now I am in the process of helping to raise funds for a bonsai nursery in Oregon that got completely wiped out - owners got a knock on their door at midnight and barely had time to drive out with their two dogs. Fire went from being 20 miles away to burning down their house in a matter of a few hours.

I hit the Santiago Peak streaming cams and all I see is smoke :(

"Today, there was heavy fire activity in the north and south ends, with the south end reaching Santa Anita Canyon near Chantry Flat. This area will have high fire activity throughout the night. Priorities for firefighters will be to hold containment lines and continue to protect Monrovia as the fire travels westward now".

:(

:(

I wonder if it has already reached the Gabrielino near Sturdevant...Bummer. I've been riding those trails since the late 80s.

Some excepts from the morning update.

"
As of today, the park facilities (ranger station, cabins, and the Nature Center) are still standing. Trask Boy Scout Camp is also still standing"

"One major area of concern is the southwest section of the fire which pushed hard to the Santa Anita Wash. It is now positioned in a drainage area below Chantry Flats and presents a threat to not only Monrovia, but the communities of Arcadia and Sierra Madre. Like the City of Monrovia, our neighboring sister cities are now impacted differently. "

"Lower Clamshell Trail served as a contingency fire break and access road for hot shot crews working on those portions of fire in northeastern Monrovia. The fire never reached the trail – which was graded – but burn spots did come very close. There are portions of the Hillside Wilderness Preserve (HWP) which did burn. Fortunately, the HWP served as an important buffer zone between the fire and hundreds of homes in North and Northwest Monrovia"
