The Fire Thread

El Dorado Fire in upper/eastern Yucaipa, and below Oak Glen. OG is under evacuation orders. El Dorado Ranch Park is one of my favorite places to be, I hope this can get knocked down quick!

Views from last week's hike at ElDo:

And the plume today from a turnout below Angelus Oaks:

El Dorado Fire shown above is 5% contained at 2000+ acres. From the BB side of the mountain it looks like a new-ish plume rising, but the smoke is moving slowly to the NW.

Sorry Mike you can’t seem to avoid the firestorms. I wonder how much Morongo land burned. There is opportunity for the tribe to observe landscape that hasn’t been visible for centuries. The immense historic and scientific potential is one way to look at it I suppose.

We went to Mammoth yesterday, had dinner, and drove home. The trip up was a bit of a comedy of errors that seemed to be the universe telling us to pack it in, but Mammoth was pretty untenable with all the smoke.
Sometimes the universe knows best. Not to mention the little voice inside... Good, honest try.

Big Bear air is still smoke free. It looks like Lake Arrowhead might not be.

ElDo fire noted as "Human Caused..."

108F here right now in Redlands, gusts are picking up, blowing a lot of debris everywhere, and bringing the smoke westerly. Cooling down tonight and tomorrow, but those winds might be worse than the heat.

This is from last night, looking south at Yucaipa Ridge from Constance Peak, pinched from my friend John's Strava. The road cuts at 9:00 in the pic are Hwy 38 below Angelus Oaks. Forest Falls turnout is below that peak, and would be in the far 7:00 of the photo if you could see it.

The Creek Fire around Shaver/Huntington is destroying some great riding areas. And homes. And other structures. :(:(
Yeah, that one sounds no good. 200ish campers/hikers airlifted out, some in not good shape. I mentioned in another thread, but smoke in Mammoth was brutal by yesterday afternoon. Of insignificant importance, we had a big hike with some fishing planned in the Bishop Pass area for today, with back up plans for Duck Pass or Tuolomne Meadows area, but it became apparent that it would be flagrantly unhealthy to try to do anything like that anywhere in the are today, so we bailed last night. Smoke was already thick down to the valley floor in Bishop by the time we pulled through around 9pm.

Looks like there's another one above Azusa now too. 500 acres and counting, started up by the West Fork San Gabriel.

Another suburban family morning
Grandmother screaming at the wall
We have to shout above the din of our rice crispies
We can't hear anything at all
Mother chants her litany of boredom and frustration
But we know all her suicides are fake
Daddy only stares into the distance
There's only so much more that he can take
Many miles away something crawls from the slime
At the bottom of a dark Scottish lake
Another industrial ugly morning
The factory belches filth into the sky
He walks unhindered through the picket lines today,
He doesn't think to wonder why
The secretaries pout and preen like cheap tarts in a red light street,
But all he ever thinks to do is watch,
And every single meeting with his so-called superior
Is a humiliating kick in the crotch
Many miles away something crawls to the surface
Of a dark Scottish loch
Another working day has ended
Only the rush hour hell to face
Packed like lemmings into shiny metal boxes
Contestants in a suicidal race
Daddy grips the wheel and stares alone into the distance
He knows that something somewhere has to break
He sees the family home now, looming in his headlights
The pain upstairs that makes his eyeballs ache
Many miles away there's a shadow on the door
Of a cottage on the shore
Of a dark Scottish lake
Many miles away

Much like this song, the warnings of the past were ignored and downplayed. We get to live with the results.
Contestants in a suicidal race...
