The Fire Thread

Damn actually really close - though I saw no plume or anything, just smelled it.
Looks like a few fires currently out in MoVal area.

Looking at the hpwren cameras, looks like it started a little before 7:45 on the Northeast slope. Not where 4x4's hangout on the west.
Looks right next to a building and then lots of flame near the building.
Looks like no current activity

We're not. The only big fire right now in CA is in Mojave Natl Preserve. Lots of big ones going in OR, WA, MT, AZ, NM. Bedrock fire north of Oakridge may burn into Alpine Trail. In BC, AB, SK some of the fires are over 1.5M acres.

Ouch… Last time I rode Alpine, I watched helis pass overhead all day. It’s a gem, but was quite sanitized last time…

Yeah I rode it last summer. There were tons of shortcuts and cheater lines. Tire Mtn was nice, narrow and very very green though.

Re Santiago peak fire, saw this on a moto forum:

The mountain isn't closed but I'm hearing that the fire crews are turning people back from reaching the towers, but everything else is open. Helicopters had extinguished the blaze by 4 a.m. It was started by teens/twenty-somethings lighting fireworks at sunset. When the fire started, they fled in their trucks downhill. One of the guys rolled his truck, called his dad to pick him up and the dad had him call the authorities instead. The dude's other friends all bailed in their trucks and are currently being sought. It is being called an 'unintentional' fire, but my doG, what kind of idiots would be doing this in the middle of summer....

Some of Interior BC is nothing but smoke. Rossland & Nelson were clear, Revelstoke was clear when we arrived but fluctuated each day and both Golden and Lake Louise are grey as grey can be. The crazy thing as opposed to bad CA fires is I can't smell it and it hasn't bothered me while riding at all. We just started getting some constant drizzle yesterday so the dirt should be great tomorrow here in Golden.

This was our arrival scene in Revelstoke but everyone in town was going on with their lives. The bike shop guys told me everything was open & rideable and the shocker was when he told me “I don’t even think they are fighting that one. Our fires generally burn pretty snow here”

Last year I watched from the top of Frisby Ridge with some other riders as a fire blew up across the valley to the east. The pic above is kinda what the smoke plume looked like. I assumed the little communication tower you can just make out below was the top of Martha Creek Tr was so I decided to hit that asap next day if not already closed, in case fire continued to grow and affect that ride.

No sign of closure and I was correct that the fire was right behind the upper TH. It didn't look like much when I got to the top the next morning but you could still see open flames. No sign of any firefighting efforts. Asked later and a local said BC Fire Service just sends someone over each day in a helo to keep an eye on it. Looks like it raced up the slope and then had no where to go at the ridge top.

So much land up there and comparatively little development, so they let lots of fires burn unless one might impact structures or blow into a developed area. Terrain and extensive clearcut logging also provides lots of fire breaks. And underbrush isn't explosively flammable like it is down here.

That Maui fire is crazy.
36 plus people dead, most of Front St and Lahaina gone?!?!
Any word on the banyan tree?
The earth hates us (humanity) right now... :(

From Kai Lenny...

“It was a truly devastating day for Maui,” says Kai Lenny. “We don’t know the full extent of the damage or the loss of life yet. The fire is still burning. My wife’s family lost two of their businesses and a home, as did so many others. It looks like the entire city was wiped off the face of the earth. I’m still just trying to process exactly what has happened. Thousands are homeless. Unbelievable that it could go from a beautiful Maui day to utter destruction.”

And from another Maui surfer:
“The wind yesterday was so strong it was scary to even go outside at my house. I was covering my head because there was stuff flying everywhere. Lots of trees down. We made it to Haiku last night but after learning that Lahaina was in complete flames, with fires around Kihei and Upcountry, I didn’t feel safe anywhere. I couldn’t sleep and was constantly checking reports. Luckily this morning it seems like the wind has chilled out, at least in Kula where we are.

“It’s just been too much. I am just praying for everyone’s safety and so, so grateful for MFD for fighting. They are so exhausted and overworked. Luckily Maui residents who have not been affected by the fires are helping by setting up stations to drop readymade food, hydration, and snacks for MFD. My heart hurts and I’m just wishing it was all just a dream.”

Sad to hear about much more loss of life, 53 and counting.
Though symbolic, the banyan is worth much less than so much loss of life.
I read it has been damaged, we'll see about it lasting.
