The Fire Thread

Two things can both be true at the same time.

Yeah... It still surprises me every time, though.

It does remind me of a student who tested off the IQ charts, but also thought he was Jesus. He was a lot of fun during a particularly bad thunderstorm when he started preaching about the end of the world in the dark cafeteria, where 1500 were waiting for a break in the weather. To his credit, I'm pretty sure he gained some followers that day. It ended, though, when he tried to fly out of a 3rd story window...

The human mind is an interesting contraption...

Assuming he was in an altered state. But hey, even the the dinosaurs had to start somewhere before they could become birds.

If memory serves, it was actually the removal of his anti-psychotics that prompted that particular episode. Scary combo when you're nuts, and you can quote the Bible from cover to cover in the middle of a building-shaking thunderstorm with a captive audience. :Roflmao

His first attempt at flight did not go well, but it was not his last. Persistence.

So Merrill and Sunset Ridge were not effected? I see the houses in the photos and personally have no point of reference because I can't ever remember seeing any homes while riding Mt Wilson except when you finish riding the Darkside

The trail that extends out of the “pointy” end of the fire outline comes out a couple hundred yards from the top of Sunset on the Lowe pavement.

That trail is a hiker trail and is almost vertical, so distance wise it’s probably only 1/4 mile to the Lowe Road (and Sunset…) from the high point of the fire outline.

Thanks for the update and detailed information.

There is some good news, and some bad news as far as Bobcat Fire access. Basically... All the remote back country stuff will reopen. The trails that I have been dying to explore will remain closed... The Forest Service did say that volunteer crews will still be allowed in for tree removal and trail restoration. Contrast that with the situation in the Santa Anas. o_O According to the Lowe Lifes Instagram account, the Gabrielino through that stretch is going to need a lot of time before it's usable. I imagine the other trails in the area are in a similar state.

One small bright spot is the Charlton area re-opening. This makes it possible to add on parts of the Silver Moccasin connecting to the Chilao Campground.

On the same note, it will be some time before the Chantry area opens again. Apparently major damage to the road, so looking at extended wait until that gets repaired.

Any good trails up there for riding?
I’ve only really ridden the trail out to Devil’s Chair. Out and back trail that is really a hiking trail but great views and a nice pedal. You can also ride the Burkheart (spelling?) Trail which branches off of the main trail.
There are trails to/from Jackson Lake in Wrightwood.
@Mikie and @Voodoo Tom are the experts on this. Guys?
I’m not sure what trails are open and what condition they are in after the fire.

Oh, yeah, I've done the Wrightwood trails a few times. Didn't realize devils punch bowl was nearby.
