The Automobile Thread

When I lived in NY, it was common to drive to the south to buy vehicles… Not too much hassle involved.
Before the creation of the EU it wasn't unheard of to travel from the UK to places like Belgium or Germany and buy your car there and then drive it back to the UK saving yourself 20% in VAT. They closed that loophole and it became a lucrative side business for UK armed forces personnel stationed in Europe to buy and sell cars back to UK making a little money on the side.

I still think Costco's deals are the best around right now.

Serious question.... aren't you allowed to buy cars from out of state here? Or do out of state dealers not want the hassle of dealing with state sales tax etc?
Yes, NBD. You just have to have it shipped to CA or else you pay taxes twice and it's a hassle. Shipping is about $500 to $1,000.

@Sidewalk real bummer on that wasted drive.

@UPSed Sales tax is based upon where you register the vehicle. Worked out for me as I bought in a 10.5% area but live in 7.75%

@Lost Kiwi Used to be difficult to buy new out of state for California. We had stricter emission laws than most states and vehicles didn't meet our standards and could not be registered. Most cars are 50 state now.
Cars under something like 7500 (or 15k?) still have to pay CA sales tax as if new.

For my own experience, I could not fill my tank on the $85 limit at the gas station today.

Where is the sales tax 10.5%?

Audi nonsense.....my wife's 2015 A3 has been nearly trouble free for us from day 1. One issue we did have is a sensor in the passenger seat that was faulty. When we took it in to be fixed.....in 2019....they wanted $1200 to fix it so since we could solve the issue by keeping the passenger seatbelt fastened, we passed on the $1200 fix. At some point after that....in 2020....lo and behold, we received a recall notice regarding the issue. The notice specifically stated, "Don't call us, we'll call you when the parts come in". We received 2-3 more of the same notices and even started getting unsolicited emails from CarFax about the issue.

Well, finally in early 2022, we received a notice that the parts were in and to call our local dealer to get the recall repair made. My wife called in January and the first available appointment was today. Since making the appointment, I've received 2 emails and 2 text messages (one of them just last night) about the appointment. My wife goes in today and not only do they no have her down as having an appointment but two years later and THEY STILL DIDN'T HAVE THE PART!!! The service advisor tells my wife "we usually get in a couple of those parts on Tuesday but not always. We can keep your car until tomorrow just in case we get some in. If we don't, the next available appointment is in June". JUNE!!!! What kind of horsescat is that?

What dealership?

Toyota and Subaru aren't producing any more 2022's. What you see is what you get until 2023, basically.

I have been side eyeing a Mustang though. Pretty big trunk, but more portly. Don't really want a turbo, but the gas mileage on the RS engine is pretty good (when you keep your foot out of it). Can also get the handling package with a Torsen, brakes, etc and still be in for less than a GT. But damn that Coyote sound...

I never bragged about "saving gas", only saving time - I never have to go to gas stations. But since you brought it up, a Subaru Crosstrek burning $3/gal gas at 30mpg costs $0.10/mile in fuel. A Tesla Model 3 "burning" $0.16/kWh electricity from SoCal Edison at the rate of 280 Wh/mi costs $0.045/mi to drive. At 12K mi/year, that's a $660 annual savings. That easily covers the cost of renting a Ford Escape from Hertz for a weeklong trip to Utah. :)

The above was from 10/2020 - Let's update with today's numbers!

A Subaru Crosstrek burning $6/gal gas at 30mpg costs $0.20/mile in fuel. A Tesla Model 3 "burning" $0.22/kWh electricity from SoCal Edison at the rate of 280 Wh/mi costs $0.062/mi to drive. At 12K mi/year, that's a ~$1650/year annual savings.

Seems like a lot of manufacturers are struggling with front end design. The M4 and most Lexus' come to mind.
Even some of the new Audis and most new BMWs are getting the front ends wrong, IMO. I didn't like the front of my 2010 Q5, but the 2018 Q5 (and all other Audis) were perfection!

BMW needs to revisit its roots:

Yep, the new 3/4 series got beat with the ugly stick. That pic above is by far the best I've seen it look. It's totally Mr. Ed, and when you add the CA front plate it's Mr. Ed with braces. Not even 15 minutes ago I was talking with a customer about the 4 series being objectively unattractive.

The modern Beemer has front grille openings that look more like a butt print, nowadays. Ya ever painted your nude butt cheeks and then made butt art on paper??? If not, that's what it looks like....

It's also what the mark on a copy machine platen looks like. So I've heard.

It's funny you said that because I always thought the Mustang SVO was really underappreciated, especially after owning one. Sales suffered at least partly due to it having a turbo four instead of a V8 and public notions about what a muscle car like the Mustang should be. Now I have a completely opposite attitude about the EcoBoost Mustang. With the way it has all its styling borrowed from the early models that defined the Mustang image, it's just not right without the V8 sound (even though the Coyote now has a flat-plane crank and IMO sounds a little weird).
