Snow Sports and/or Surfing

Ok, I think I drove thru there when we went to the Smith Rock . Sisters looked like a cool town also.

Also looking at the other side of the mountains, towards the west coast and closer to large airports.

Thats why the Reno area is attractive to me. ..airport/snow/trails.

Nevada would be the ticket if I could find a reason to go there. No tax on retirement income.

Reno is close to Tahoe. You can ride them thar mt. bikes in the Tahoe area, I'm told! But driving to ride is not everyone's idea of ideal.

According to my buddy Eric who lives in Reno there is good riding close to the city. You don't necessarily have to drive to Tahoe.

@scottay I looked into Reno as well for the same reasons you stated. The people of central Oregon seem super happy and friendly which is also enticing.

Nice, @Redman

PSA, rumor has it that www.eriksbikeshop.com is getting out of snow sports. They're having an advertised sale, but I heard that they're doing 50% off in store, and will honor it online if you ask via the chat. I scored a new pair of Vans Infuse, and they were indeed 50% off with free shipping.

Put my Mercury on Craigslist this morning, and have a dude coming to see it tomorrow. Going back to my trusty Sims Tom Sims Pro (pressed by Never Summer), and not replacing the Merc with something else new.

Weren't getting along with the Merc eh? Boards are all personal preference so it happens unfortunately as you probably know.
I mean, I only gave it one day, and I know that's not giving it a fair shake, but the sidecut was weird in a way that I think I could have gotten used to but never would have loved. Never Summer's vario-grip sidecut just feels so natural to me, but they don't currently make the camber profile I want. The Sims was/is kind of the perfect board for me (NS construction/geometry with camber dominant cam-rock profile), and the Academy Master is essentially the same board, so maybe I'll grab one of those on clearance at some point, since NS isn't pressing Sims any longer.

Can't argue with that and you're not the first person I've heard say that about the sidecut. It took me a while to get use to mine so I can relate to your sentiment. The Merc a lot of board and aggressive so some may view that at as a negative. Those Academy's look sweet plus Chad O is the man so probably can't go wrong there. Hopefully you sell that Merc for a good price then! I may try something out of the Capita line next season to mix it up and keep the merc for the Bachy type mountains.

Something like 3-4' of snow predicted for Mt. High this week. That'll be... interesting. The West has a great base on all runs, so it will be awesome if the snow is not cement. The East however would be my choice as the crowds are light and the runs are looooong! And the steepest run at the area is there.

That said, it was 12-16" of mid-weight snow that ruptured my disk last year. So I think I should steer clear.

We're going to have 4-5 days straight of moisture here in Prescott so no MTB'ing here for a bit. I'm watching the storms in Utah and plan on chasing powder across the state starting on Sunday or Monday. We have a week already booked in Park City the 4-11 so hopefully can hit Big Cottonwood and the stuff outside of Ogden before rolling into PC.

Oh jeeez. Here we go again. My whole joke about calling you "GrampsAlot" is actually coming to fruition with a statement like that :gag:. Plus I've heard you say that before...:whistling: The solution is to snowboard instead of ski in powder and just like I said last time. Mind blown I know. I'm going this weekend some how some way even if I have to rent a 4x truck!! :p

.
Whole setup? Or just the board? Got a suggestion on a complete set-up plus boots from Ericks? The vans size 9 is gone.....

Thanks!
.
Just the board, and it actually did sell this morning. Looks like the boards are getting petty picked over, and I'm not seeing stuff I'm overly familiar with in the right sizes. Maybe Nitro Team or Lib Tech Ejack Knife if you like camber and err on the aggressive side. They do seem to have Union Force, Union Atlas, and Burton Cartel reflex bindings in Medium. Can't go wrong with any of those. Don't really know about boots, as they're so fit specific. I've worn Nike Kaijus for a decade, and bought an extra pair when Nike got out of snowboarding. I hate the idea of getting used to a new boot, but I have to move on some time.

Re: board, this is the one that I mentioned in my previous post, and this is a killer deal: https://www.christysports.com/product/academy-masters-snowboard/499989152938.html. It is essentially, perhaps exactly the same board as the Tom Sims Pro that I ride. Never Summer did OEM manufacturing for both brands, and used this mold for both. Core and carbon layup seem to be the same as well. I think it's a stellar all mountain type of board that is really easy to get along with but can still charge.

If there's 5' of snow by Saturday morning, you better leave your house no later than 5:30 am if you don't want to get behind the asshats who will invariably clog the road! I'll loan you my parking pass when I swing by to try the helmets. I will not loan you one of our cars. :stop:

And yeah bucko - insult me all you want, but me being a hero in the hospital won't do you any good. You've seen my MRI. It didn't fix itself.

PS - Thanks for the helmet loan.

FYI for you SoCal riders.... Keep an eye on Mt. Baldy! If you guys get the snowfall amounts predicted for this upcoming storm Baldy will be EPIC! When it is deep there isnt a local resort that can even be in the same room as Baldy. Steeps, chutes, trees, rock drops, all there at Baldy. Take Chair 3 to the top, travese south and go out of bounds for a bit. Then drop in and ride all the way down to below the parking lot, hitch a ride back to the lot and do it again. OR, take chair 4 to the top and go down Turkey Shoot. Just before you get to Holumac dive out of bounds to the right and ride the goods all the way back down to the parking lot. Best powder in all of SoCal. ONLY IF IT'S DEEP WITH A DECENT BASE.

Or take your rock skis....

I've ridden Turkey Shoot. Ran out of oxygen.

I have heard this for many years. This might be the storm to make it happen. However, there is minimal base, so WYSIWYG.
