Rwanda 50 Mile Ride- 2017

I will probably do the 25 again this year, was hoping to do the 50 but riding has been nearly non-existent for me the past few months.

I am tentatively taking next Friday off to ride actually so I may join in for part of whatever you guys do. I don't have much gas in the tank these days though.

So @Cornholio - with yesterday and all - ready to come out and push me on the 50???:whistling:

So....it's 11 days away. I go out to clean up the bike from yesterday's romp through the stream bottom on MTT, and what do I find??? The drive side BB bearings are shot. Don't want to turn much, lotta resistance even when spinning the crank arm. I take off the cranks, and can barely turn it with my fingers. It appears I've gone through one too many sandy/gritty watercourses. Sh!t!!!

Gotta hope BP Bikes can come through this weekend. Trying to get there during the week isn't realistic, though I'll do my best.

I didn't get 3 months out of my last BB in the wet season... Maybe it's time to invest in one that isn't disposable.

I'll be out there sweeping ... A nice relaxing 50 miler.

Yup.....CK BB has over 20,000 miles on it. Still running smooth. Serviced it about 3 weeks ago. Best $80 I spent(I worked in a shop when I got it)....they go about $150 now.

We've talked about this, but I'll throw it out there for the others... The math really seems to make sense for a non-disposable BB. My Shimano XTRs can die with one really good water ride, like when I rode in the pouring rain in Oregon for 6 hours, with mud and water crossings galore. I knew when I got off the bike that day that it would need to be replaced. Its successor did not last through the rainy season in SoCal... The Shimanos (and similar non-serviceable BBs) are made to be disposable.

So you're saying that servicing them makes them last longer???

Maybe I should do that going forward with the new one.

What type of shimano bb are you using. My external cup 24mm has been running fine for the last 4 years. Just a quick lube yearly. It even survived that week long heavy rain, after my kids decided that my bike needed a thorough wash and left in the open yard. I had to replace the chain and cassette after that drenching .

Not necessarily. It means that they are serviceable. Means that they should last longer. It means that instead of running it into the ground and buying a new one, you can squirt grease into the bearings and extend the service life. Plus with CK, you can always send the BB back in for a refresh.

XTs and XTRs... But they get a lot of miles in a short time... I can get a year out of one when it's dry (4000 miles), but lots of water shortens the life span significantly.

When I think Chris King, I think headsets or hubs. Cane Creek headsets are every bit as good, and DT Swiss hubs are better IMO. I forgot that they made bottom brackets. And from J's experience, it sounds like they make one that is exponentially better than the competition's. I will look into this next time I am in the market for a BB. Thanks!

Has anyone heard anything about the Enduro bottom brackets? I've read good things, but it sounds like they are a little finicky to set up.

I have not... You might want to ask in the shop forum, though. I don't think the Rwanda thread gets much traffic.

I rode most of the 25 course today, minus the climbs. Gotta save the legs for tomorrow... :D The good news is that I made it across all the water crossings this time. The entrances and exits don't always line up with the old lines, but they are clearable. Rocky, but clearable. Sections of the Arroyo Trail are going to be more like an adventure ride this year. I like it... Some of the roadies may not.

It's a good thing that we finish on the Arroyo Trail. Drive trains are going to need a good cleaning after that...

I have discovered the shockingly pathetic stock of tires at LBSs within 20 miles of me. I cannot find a 29" Maxxis Ardent 2.25 anywhere!! So, I will be using my somewhat worn rear tire on this adventure.

I think I'll order one, though, so I can have it in the near future.

REI in Rancho Cucamonga has one I stock. I saw it yesterday. I think it's $60-70 though.
