Today, I rode for doughnuts.

I see bicycles on the 5 through Pendleton quite often and have the same thought. Riding on the freeway shoulder with semi’s passing you at 80 mph just doesn’t sound like fun at all.

At least they are going straight. Years back when I did Ride Around the Bear, we were heading up to Big Bear in between snow Valley and the Dam....semi’s pulling double trailers going around those tight turns.....the cab stayed within the lanes, but the trailers were all over the bike lane.

My understanding is that bicycle traffic on the 5 was legal only when the base wasn't allowing thru-traffic? Or is it always legal?

I've seen them recently. As far as I know, the base is still restricting bicycles riding through. The last time that I checked you had to pre-apply for access online and bring your ID to the gate so they could check the list. Just checked their site, looks like you have to apply for the pass in person now at the visitor center.

@buggravy should be able to help you out with that.
Ha, just saw this. Yeah, my bike's pedals (those same green OneUps above), stem, spokes, and decals match just perfectly. The green grips are off a shade or two. My face still twitches a little bit every time I walk past it in the garage. I'm about to place a little order through Worldwide Cyclery. Thanks @mtnbikej for the reminder to throw some black Gripplers in there.
