Not 5 Star Products....Things That Have Failed

I used to ride EBs for the weight savings. I did send them in periodically to be rebuilt but the only time I ever had a failure out on the trail was when one of the springs broke. I mini-bungee corded the broken pieces against the functioning springs to build tension, and then they worked fine for for the rest of the ride.

I am on SPD Shimano pedals now on all of my bikes. I need all of the pedals to be the same design because I use one pair of shoes for all of my bikes. Never had a failure with the Shimanos but ALL of them "click" and I have had the same complaint about them from my riding buddies as well.
 
Nope...the 540's are just as fragile as the others.

Don't know what you guys are doing to those SPD pedals. I have never broken a spindle and still have usable pedals from the early 90's.
Only issue I ever had was that the Ti spindle on an XTR pair was machined wrong and the pedal developed play that could not be adjusted out. Shimano sent me a new pair.

They have all done the same thing. Pedal body comes off the spindle. Sometimes it's just a matter of the preload and locknut backing off, other times the whole threaded end of the spindle snapped off.
 
How long "should" a hub last?

Easton M1 rear axle and new-ish bearings are toast, freehub worn enough to replace. Worked Great on the Divide and a bunch of trail rides here on the hardtail and Czar, now DOA.

Save a few bucks, yea right. Pay up front, or pay at some inconvenient time not of your choosing. The latter is what I'm doing now. The one-bike blues.

Never heard good things about Easton Hubs. Sorry to hear.

DT Swiss FTW!!!! :inlove::inlove::inlove:

My DT 240s lasted 9 years and then I sold them with my Knolly Endorphin. Probably still going strong into year 11.

The early M1 hubs had some known issues regarding the free-hub and axle. They released an update with replacement parts free of charge a few years ago, you should reach out to them to see if they offer it. I have the upgraded version on my 29r hardtail and they have been surprisingly reliable.

Thanks a bunch for that, Erik. I'm aware of the issues with that gen of M1 hubs; mine is a more recent version.

I'm not necessarily saying the hub died prematurely – stuff does wear out when used hard. But yea, not putting any more $ into Easton wheels; once this set is fixed they'll be purged and I'll be back on DTS. :thumbsup:
 
My turn... Tonight was supposed to be the first Black Star to Motorway night ride that wasn't freezing... It was beautiful up there, and the temps were great! I thought that my pedal was creaking a little bit, and I even mentioned to J that I would like to take it to Crank Brothers before the Redlands Strada Rossa. At mile 10, just before the Skinsuit trailhead, my egg beater was still firmly attached to my shoe, but not to the spindle... :thumbsdown:

For the record, this is a Crank Brothers Egg Beater 3 that is about 8 months old. Purchased from the Crank Brothers store... Where it will be going back to tomorrow!

I have a pair of Mallet 3s, a pair of Egg Beater 1s, and this is the first pair that has failed in the last 4 years.

@Faust29, while I have some considerable history with EB pedals, I agree that Shimano SPDs are a better product. They dont have quite as much float as EBs, but they are supreme, comparatively. Invest in a pair of XTR Race pedals and then forget about your pedal failure concerns.

I have had "clicking" bearing issues a few times with Shimano pedals but they have never come apart and I have never broken a spring (broke a few with EBs).

The XTR pedals have a 2 year warranty! :thumbsup:

And after two years, I bet you could get @mtnbikej to rebuild them if needed. :whistling:
