New Bike Day!

Ok... Here goes. For the last few months I've been talking @mtnbikej 's ear off about adding a full suspension bike to the stable. I've read every review and forum post for the Canyon Spectral, YT Jeffsy, SC Hightower, Tallboy, 5010, and the GG Smash, Trail Pistol, and Megatrail. That was the short list. I added one more near the end at Revolution when I was able to briefly pedal a Hightower LT. That was instant love. :inlove: In the end, the Canyon and YT came off the list, because of the press fit bottom brackets.

With two in college, and a stack of recent unexpected bills, I wasn't sure there was going to be a new bike day... I had been watching all of the listings on Colorado Cyclist, Back Country, and had talked to the Path about what kind of deals they had going. The Rocky Mountains that they have on clearance check a lot of the boxes, but then it's another case of a press fit bottom bracket. Bummer... I also missed out on a GG Trail Pistol frame on Pink Bike that went for a really good price... in about two hours. I probably would have been very happy with that one, too...

Over the last few weeks, I made a spread sheet of all the offerings at the on-line retailers, comparing prices and component spec. If money were no option, it would have been a loaded Smash sitting in the garage. :inlove: I'm going on record to say that I will own one of their bikes someday... Back Country had a base model Hightower for $3299, which I thought was a pretty decent deal- $700 off the original price. Then last week it dropped to $2799 for the few that they had remaining. I texted J, and told him I was probably going to order a bike. When he responded that Active Junky was doing 12% cash back, it was a done deal... A new Hightower for not much more than I paid for the Chameleon.   The lifetime frame warranty was also a big selling point. I tend to break things.

It arrived last night when I was out on the Tuesday social. Thankfully I have a kid home for Thanksgiving, and he was able to carry it off the truck for the driver. :Roflmao

I did not expect it to be assembled, but my Back Country "gear advisor" emailed me the other day and sent a picture of the bike fully assembled... That was a pretty nice touch.

This box is huge...

This box is really well packed, but it looks pretty much assembled... And the tires have air.
IMG_0643.jpg

Tires were mounted, and it sounds like there's 4 or 5 ounces of sealant in each. They both had 30+ pounds of air...
IMG_0644.jpg

Awesomely packed... Eventually freed from its cardboard prison with a pair of cutters.
IMG_0646.jpg

Not really much to do...
IMG_0647.jpg

Lots of small touches in the packing...
IMG_0650.jpg

Can't have the chain rubbing on the axle in transit...
IMG_0649.jpg

We went to find some stairs to bounce on...
IMG_0651 (1).jpg

Plans for the future...

I'm still fussing with the cockpit and saddle. I'll probably lose a spacer or two under the stem, and I'll swap out the aluminum bars for the RaceFace carbon bars I have ready to go. I would have done it today, but I want to ride it stock for a ride or two.

The stock wheels were supposed to come with Novatec hubs, but they are SRAM. My last set of Novatec hubs disintegrated after 100 miles, so I'm happy to see they are something else. I've had good luck with SRAM's low end hubs in the past. I may keep this wheelset as a backup...

The everyday wheels will be a set of "JM Custom Wheels". :D Silver Hope hubs with Arc 30 rims. :inlove:

Also in the box was a bag of goodies... The tires were loaded with sealant already, so I have some extra. Pretty nice touch.

Sweeeeet! Hope to maybe see you out at Oaks or SkyPark sometime on that rig. :sneaky:

I wouldn’t even have a device at home to play that disc with unpacking info. 2007

Nice! Congrats on the new bike! I’ve never bought a full bike from Backcountry/Comp Cyclist but I have bought 3 or 4 frames and it’s always been a good transaction.

Awesome bike! I'd put frame protection tape on Asap.

I’m on the fence with full frame protection, or I guess I should say I’m still on one side of the fence. PITA part aside, I just don’t see the need to completely cover the entire bike with plastic. Carbon is strong and scratches are cool. However, I do put little strips of 3M tape on cable rub spots or any other areas I see as wear points. Heck, I’ve gotten so lazy that I just put some electrical tape on my frame now since it’s matte black.

If one is looking to sell a frame down the road then that’s a different story, spend those 4 hours taping that thing up!

I like to keep nice things nice as long as possible- Countless times I hear rocks bouncing off the rims and frame. :whistling:

I get it, I’m actually super anal about keeping my drivetrain clean and used to be the same about all parts of my bike. But I have to ask, do you really protect your rims as well?

I still don’t get protecting every inch of your frame, it reminds me of car bras but on an even more overprotective scale.

I like my bike to show the patina of the trail. Small scratches, some dirt and dust, and a little dried mud on occasion.

But yes, cover wear spots. I had a shifter cable wear completely through the chainstay on my specialized back in the day.

And J told me that Skypark can be done on a hardtail no problem. He wouldn't fib, would he?!!@#@!$ :p:D

Lots of trails can be done on Hardtails. Almost all of those same trails are more fun on a full sus. A little squish in the rear can keep you safer.

Congratu-damn-lations on the bike, the research and the experience. I can't wait to see you piloting this beauty on some chunky stuff. I need to be there when the sly smile comes out at the bottom of a run and you go "Well that was fun..." (I know you Germans don't emote a lot.) Who knows, you might even like The Luge now!

No I do not tape my rims. Last March when my bike was new I went over the bars in Sedona and chipped the swing arm. After that I was big on frame tape. I will admit though that every so often I will hear a rock bounce off the rim or frame and I wince. Eh.. Oh well ride and have fun. :D

So, now that I've come back down from my southern Utah happy place and had time to properly digest this post, all I can say is WTH????? What in the world possessed you to go full squish? Next thing you know you'll be rockin' a rear derailleur and gears!! :gag: But seriously, congrats on the new bike stoke and I'll wave at you as you go even faster down those hills in front of me....:thumbsup:

Very happy for you Steve, I can see you smiling all the way down Motorway and beyond. The bikes geometry for climbing imo feels perfect I enjoy long rides on my Hightower both climbing and descending on it are both fun! it's a do it all kinda bike!! I really dig that canary grey color as well

There's the full story!

I've been semi-away from the internet, and just like that, there's a new Santa Cruz in town!

I was following CC's sale, thinking of jumping on one. Missed all the deals, but there's always next year!

HNBD!
