New Bike Day!

I find it interesting how Spesh dropped the FSR/Horst rear suspension design on some of the new Epics and went with a single pivot instead.

Good eye. I hadn't noticed that - but then, I haven't seen many XC Speshy's lately. I wonder what the thinking is?

Ahhh - read Rossage's post. Yeti used to do that a little more deliberately. There was a skinny carbon insert where a pivot might be on the seatstay, above the axle on my 575s.

I am thinking that since the patent for FSR has expired, the company can open it's horizons and no longer has a gem to protect. Looks like the Horst link has been discon'ed on all of the Epic full suspension models but it is still being used on everything else with full suspension.

New-ish bike day yesterday.

A few months back one of the neighbors put this frame out with the trash. I can recognize a good beer/beach bike when I see it, so I executed a rescue mission.

I recently scored a cheap wheelset for it and put it together last night. My used parts bin was raided for stem/handlebars, tires, grips, seat and drivetrain upgrade.

Front D that I left on it isn't shifting well so I may try to remove or update that. Pretty good score....

You should wheelie it up and down the block a few times then sell it back to the owner when they come to check you out.

Nice find! I dig on seeing people ride older bikes as well as new. Yeah I'd ditch the FD though and make it a 1x or SS.

The official line was that it only altered the axle path by roughly 1/8", but they saved anywhere from 1/2 lb to 3/4 lb with the new frame design. Eliminating the horst link was part of that redesign.

Won't be going SS on this bike, but 1x would be desirable if I can make it work with minimal investment. The middle/large chainrings seem to be one piece so I'll have to look at what I can do. Sounds like there are some loose or broken BB bearings so that may need to be replaced anyways.

Have a 2016 shimano 9 speed derailer and shifter for donation. I think I can send it by mail. Off my camber 29. Let me know if you want it.

After trying out the new Remedy and
the new Fuel ex, I wasnt feeling comfortable on either one. I then focused on the Spectral cf pro from Canyon since they opened up a showroom in Carlsbad I was able to demo bike there, same thing as the previous 2 bikes felt like my head was over the bars and these where Large size frames. I was in for more demos, I then visited BP bikes which is a local shop I wanted to try out the Hightower Lt. "WoW" first time on a 29er. and I actually dug it! geometry of the bike felt like a really good fit.

I wanted to ride the LT on a trail, so I strated to look on SC website for demo dates. To my surprise they where coming to Trabuco end of March to the Path bike shop and this was my chance. I showed up late the day of and Mike one of the SC reps said they where just waiting for one more guy and they where done, bummer.
He asked me what bike I was intrested in and what was my riding style, I explained
XC/ Trail some techy downhill but nothing
to crazy! He replied the LT might be to much travel for you, he was right. Mike then suggested the regular Hightower all his bikes where all packed up that's when he told me to go into the Path and check them out!

I test road the Large size reg. Hightower mango orange nice color! I instantly felt this bikes geometry was perfect for me those 29er. tires just roll over stuff really good. I told the sales person I'll take it in gloss canary/grey he said they where having a 15% discount off msrp. only that day as a promotion for SC being there.
I told him if I can pay him cash at the end of April and still get the discount he
replied he will honor it, plus he dropped it down a bit more. There was no way I was not gonna buy this bike. Only problem SC sent the wrong color they sent the mango orange, they where notified they sent the canary/ grey early this week, now they sent the wrong colored graphics on the fork fox stickers are orange? they shld. be blue/ black those will arrive prob. next week.

I settled on the XE build kit.
XT brakes.
XT shifter.
XT derailleur.
Race Face Turbine 30t.
E-thirteen cassette 9-46t.
Fox fork 36 performance elite.
Fox shock performance elite float DPS.
Race Face AR27 29er. Wheels.
Santa Cruz carbon handlebar 780mm.
Rockshox reverb stealth. 150mm.

It's not a Santa Cruz I originally had in mind to buy, but I did make a great choice
in my opinion, Lifetime warranty on the frame and pivots at a great price. Im glad I showed up late to the demo.

Congrats on your new steed! I am glad to see that the assimilation into the Borg* is working.

Enjoy your new uber machine. Sounds like everyone who has ridden a Hightower has bought one. Don't forget to order your Chameleon too!

Now about that screen name...

*(...see, nearly everyone in So Cal is buying and riding Santa Cruz bikes so it's like one collective being.... )

Awesome...,,,.welcome to the clan.

It’s hard to argue with a bike that just works that well.

Enjoy.
