Life...Behind Bars

In my experience, it's not. . . . . unusual. . . . . to have a carbon MTB come into the shop with a creak in the bottom bracket and/or headset area. If I am being honest (what's the point in talking otherwise?), I would probably avoid a carbon frame with a PF BB, if not altogether, just because of the possibility of a creak developing. If I did get one, I would probably install the Praxis PF to Threaded adapter straight away.

As it is, I have a 1x11 drivetrain, and I have to remove the cassette every few months to clean/grease the interface between the freehub body and the cassette. the creak starts to reveal itself on steep climbs, and gets progressively worse until I give it the business. At least I know what it is, and can easily quiet it back down, but I have never had that problem before.

Those of you that suffer unknown creaking on your carbon wunderbikes, you have my sympathy. I would be so disappointed to have such an expensive bike make those embarrassing noises.

Oh, and here is a bar shot. . . .

I fully expected my new carbon wonderbike to creak. And right on cue, about ride #5, here we go. Yup, I think it's embarrassing to have a bike that creaks, clicks, cracks and complains while climbing. Leave the complaining to the rider! Lucky for me, I discovered the source (derailleur) and fixed it. Fortunately, it's quiet as a church mouse for now. I expect that won't last long until something else develops to make me cringe, but I'll take it for now.

Wait - what? This thread is not about creaks and cracks? It's about photos from your handlebars? Uh oh. Let me see what I can find. Stand by.

Best I could come up with. 3-19-16 on STT. Looks like some finger intrusion in the shot.

I had the exact same problem with my SRAM 1x11. Took it in for grease ( again), The Path called sram and they warrantied the cassette.
quiet as a mouse now, no creak at all. And I used the cassette for over a year too!

They had some cassettes that creaked under load, and will warranty them. Tell 'em it sounds like a frog...

And my Carbon bike stopped all carbon creaks after about 6-9 months. All broke in and silent. ( Better not have jinxed myself)

How can I be so poor yet my life be so rich?

I read this earlier today and have been thinking about it.

It's how you live, Rox. You appreciate simple things, and you are thusly rewarded.

We all here are blessed because we have a similar bent. It seems weird at times because we live, generally, amid such excess. I thank my lucky stars I have a mate who, like me, couldn't care less about the typical measures of success. To each his own, but we will never buy into the status quo. Dirtbagging FTW. Appreciate what you got, cuz it's a lot. I'm thankful every day to be living life behind these bars.

Carry on

A shot from behind the bars of my Specialized AWOL taken up on the old Ridge Route and even with Pyramid Lake, but a couple miles east of the I-5. More of a 'mixed surface' ride now that Mother Nature is leaving her mark.

The ridge in the upper left is where the Golden Eagle trail climbs up onto the ridge line.

A picture from Sunday's (4/17) ride on La Tuna Canyon trail in the Verdugo's. This is from the upper part of the single track, which was great. There is a lot of long grass now, which both makes the trail look really pretty and also makes it hard to see some of the rocks and other obstacles. A great ride.

When I stopped to take this picture, I happened to look to the right, down into the canyon, and noticed for the first time that there is a second rusted out car car, just downhill from the reddish one. How did they get there?

Dan
