Knee Replacement Day October 12th 2021

Ohhhh-Kay!
Just a heads up… Some truths.
Having double knee replacements is probably the most painful thing I’ve gone through.
I thought my Pelvis Presley move with the tree was bad, but it was painful only if I moved, and probably still hits that pain category. But yesterday was… painful. Just laying there, no matter what I did or how I positioned myself.
I was alone for about an hour and I just laid there and cried.

I had to “proof of purchase” the new knees by showing I could walk some in the hospital which I did before I could get discharged.

I thought I had it made on day one and the beginning of day two. Apparently they give you the same pain blocks as they do for child birth. I think it is called an Epidural? Something to do with your spine. But that stays in your system for several hours after surgery. But when that wore off… WOW! Hero to zero in less than 60 seconds.

So it’s Friday morning and now I’m willing to even look at my iPad or texts. The significant key to success is a planned medication chart. A couple days ago, we got off track on the Oxycontin and I think I was O.D.’ing, seriously. CJ was getting me out of bed for the last trip to the bathroom that night and I passed out, hit the floor (naturally on my new knees). I was instantly drenched in sweat and completely disoriented. It was a panic moment.

Starting to do a lot better. Got the pain meds regulated to a half pill every 3 hours. Ice on the bottoms and top of the knees 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off all day. I now have exercises I now have to do to insure range of motion.

Well, there’s that.

:eek::eek::eek:

My wife had one of those fancy gadgets with the circulated cooling for her back years ago… Hers was doctor prescribed. Before Amazon. It did wonders…

Hang in there…

Don't you have a walker? My wife only had one knee done and they told her she needed to use the walker for at least the first three days...

Sorry you're feeling so miserable. All I can offer is (1) do the exercises religiously and (2) it gets better. My wife is like a new person - we go walking all the time for miles on forest trails, where before I was lucky if she could make it around the block on pavement.

You missed the New Walker Day post? ...Aluminum frame, old-school steep geo, low-resistance tires. :geek:

Damn, Mikie, sorry to hear you had rough couple days. If they haven't yet removed the thick dressing that goes on immediately after surgery, take solace in knowing that the cooling units will be infinitely more effective when those are gone. Just try to remember that the pain will be gone before you know it, but the bitchin' new socks will remain. No one can take that from you.

As @mike mentioned, I bought a new one as the old one got tossed due to flexy joints from hard usage: https://www.imtbtrails.com/forum/threads/new-bike-day.6275/page-75#post-266130

It’s my staple of transportation. I get up 4 times a day minimum to use the restroom, and my “got to walk” time. I’m not quite ready to REALLY take it for a spin to see what that new design can really do. So @Runs with Scissors sadistic push for PR’s is a bit premature :whistling:. However my Physical Therapist showed me a trick aftermarket move. She swapped the front wheels with each other moving the wheels to the inside of the frame as opposed to the outside. Wow! What a difference. Like moving away from 800mm bars to like 600mm will give me huge advantages on the tight slalom courses inside the house. Far more door clearance is definitely going to up my game on game days!

It’s around Wolfie’s (@DangerDirtyD) time of night, I’m guessing 1:00/1:30am. Just took another half of some Oxy at midnight and feeling pretty decent (probably the Oxy talking). Either way, it’s nice to be feeling a little better, and it appears my spelling is relatively in check.
Commander Cody… OUT!

The physical therapist is either going to be a hot young chick fresh out of college, or a guy named Bruno who doubles as a bouncer in a biker bar. I'm kinda hoping for Bruno... Get you back into shape quick. None of this touchy feely recovery stuff.

True story. Hernia operation pre op. I swear this is true, they sent in a total hot chick in a nurses uniform to SHAVE ME:confused: I can't remember exactly but I said something like your kidding right? Why don't they do that while you're under?

Anyway. Sure enough it started waking up when she applied the shaving cream. I'm embarrassed and she leaves. Minutes later comes in a large old nurse, at least it wasn't a guy. Problem solved.
Get well Mikie...

Hey Bugz, they have not removed the 400 layers of thick dressing yet. I’m positive if they do a cross section and count the rings I would be hundreds of years old. My calves are swollen and feel sunburned to the touch. Makes me think I’m the Midas Man or Somethin’. I’ll be really glad when removed so I can start feeling some confidence bending my knees without ripping stitches!

Your spelling is better on Oxy.

Thanks for the progress update, boss. :p:thumbsup:

Seriously, what is the next milestone you are going to crush? Hoping you're feeling decent.
Well…
Tomorrow I experience the first “real” physical therapy. It will indicate where I sit in the peloton of knee replacements. Unfortunately, I come in a bit under gunned as I had a double, most people apparently don’t do this.
I can share some insider trading that the right knee is kicking azz on my left knee.
  • Left knee is more swollen
  • Left has more bruising ( eesh! It’s ugly! Actually they are both ugly all the way down to the ankles…)
  • Left has less than 30% range of motion
  • Right is slightly less swollen and only slightly less bruised
  • Right has over 45% range of motion
So my bet is on the right leg for the win!
Uh, wait… I need both….:gotnothing:
Follow up reports forthcoming. Let you know how PT goes with bad cop!
She is here between 2:00 - 4:00pm.

Hmmm, so what you're saying is that you will be leaning right, or favoring the right, or you prefer the progress made by the right. I am shocked by this!

Here's hoping your body is not as polarized as our great nation! :whistling: :speechless: :stop: :sneaky:

Are you goofy/switch foot/right dominant? Presuming so, based on the above.

TFPU. I don’t know enough to say good or bad, but happy to hear you’re ardently on the program. The long haul wins it, bud, so, onward through the fog. Healing vibes!

Going into this my right knee was finally effecting my day to day. Getting from the parking lot to my office at work was getting difficult at best. My left was giving me no grief. Pre-Op the Doc asked if we could only do one, which one? I naturally said the right. So I’m thinking my left got sloppy seconds!:D There. That’s as deep as I was going there. :p:cool:

I posted some bruise pics over on @mike ’s Fall Colors Crash Confession and probably should not have. No comparison to taking a dive on your bike and just getting beat up during surgery.
I just took a meager walk outside and CJ freaked about my legs as it is dark in the house. She took this:

This should motivate you knee replacement holdouts! o_O
