I must be a freeway ash-hole you are talking about. I rarely drive less than 75 if I can. In most freeway situations (other than heavy traffic), if I drive slower than 75, I will be clogging the flow. That said, I have my head on a swivel and am fully engaged in driving - not texting, programming my nav, looking at e-mail, shaving, eating, smoking or disciplining children. When I pass, I do so as seamlessly as possible (whether it's on the right or the left), using my signals and not needing my brakes or causing anyone else to adjust their driving at all. If I get blocked in, I'm usually quite patient.

I also accelerate faster from stoplights than 98% of all drivers - save for those in Teslas who truly understand how quick their cars really are! Not because my car is fast, but because I pay attention to when the light is going to change. That said, I always look before I leap. Too many red-light runners and late pedestrians to trust a fresh green light.

Sorry if I'm "that guy" to some of you.
Thank you for your service.

I have witnessed things that purely insane on a regular basis! This is a big factor of why I want out.
I had two family members killed in bum-F@ck Days Creek, Oregon. Hit and run, left 'em for dead. The grass is not greener.

I can think of 100 reasons to want to get out, but insane driving on two lane roads is not confined to California.

I usually stay quiet on the subject of roads and traffic here... Because my perspective is different than a native Californian. I usually just chuckle when @DangerDirtyD talks about the horrible road conditions. But I have to agree with this ^^^.

I've lived in three "corners" of the country, and driven in most of the 48 contiguous states. I'll take CA driving and roads over a good swath of the country... Any day. Even with the congestion. People are just not as angry here as they are elsewhere. And the roads have seen improvements since Eisenhower! You can go over 55 here on the interstate without worrying about losing car parts. Try that in the rust belt... :p

The passing on the left is a law in some states but not California, thankfully. Just way too much traffic ( usually).
Could you imagine someone going 65 in the left lanes on a Calif freeway? What else can you do but pass on the right.

But the freeway always has entitled a holes on it.
I used to be the 85mph guy everywhere I went regardless of speed posting... But I never weaved through traffic or passed like a wild man on the right. I never drive the fast lane anymore...
I drive between Bakersfield and Santa Clarita quite often on Interstate 5. The average speed limit is already around 80 mph although posted is 65 for 4 wheeled vehicles and 55 for Semi's.
If I'm driving in lane 2 with the "fast lane" wide open, more people choose to pass on the right then the left anymore, naturally passing through my blind spot.
California posts signs that if you are slower traffic you are to move to the right, meaning slower traffic to the right and faster traffic to the left.
I hate when people pass me on the right.

Rant over!

The balls represent the Freeway Jackwads...

I think the key is using your turn signal. It makes all the difference in the world in LA traffic.
I also find the thank-you wave helps keep the peace when merging.

I hope you guys with sights on AZ don't have some misconception that the drivers on that side of the Colorade River are not some of the worst in the country. SoCal driving has gotten worse, but it doesn't compare to how much worse driving attitudes have gotten in the Grand Canyon State. Check out As$hole Drivers of Phoenix videos on YT if you need some illustrations. Accidents galore, insane passing, weaving, speeding, tailgating – including on surface streets. I'll take SoCal over Phoenix for driving.

Yes, every state has them. Closer to metro areas is where they congregate mostly, but not at all exclusively.

What cracks me up about AZers is how much they complain about Californians and yet, most of them are from there.

Yes, the California migration has been going on for years now, and seems to have intensified over the last 5 or so years, so many people have left and have slowly but steadily brought the famous California mentality to what WAS otherwise more tame. It is funny the Californian migrators are complaining but it’s what everybody it trying to escape, it has to be better somewhere? Phenix was not on my radar.

What element is most important for you to escape? For example, if you are trying to escape crowds, moving to the Front Range of Colorado or any other desirable location close to mountain recreation will also be frustratingly crowded. If you are trying to escape a dominant set of cultural values like superficiality, extreme political correctness or wacky government intervention - you can get the opposite in a lot of places. But you might not like the weather! Or the driving.

As you know - anyplace has its positives and negatives. Which California trait do you most want to escape?

Back in high school but didn't have my license yet, was riding in the car with a cocky over-confident daredevil buddy who just got his. This was cornfield towns north of Indy, lots of straight roads for miles, a few have stop lights. So we're approaching an intersection with a stoplight that is red, going 60 or so, buddy is not slowing, he looks quickly left then right then left, sees a car coming from the sidestreet which has a green light, he guns it, blows right through the red and beats the other car who was panic braking into the intersection. Don't think I ever rode with him again after that.

I'd agree that any state, any community has people like that. Sure some places a higher percentage than others. The fact that there's so many more people here, and traffic, and all in a hurry to get somewhere because life depends on getting there 30 seconds sooner...., or maybe the crazy drivers are just playing games like my buddy....

The usual de blah blah… BMW, Mercedes, Porche, Audi, Ferrari or anything more expensive than my 2010 Honda Civic Sedan...

A Honda!?!@? You must be rich

Just messing... When we were visiting NY, we played "Find the foreign car" at traffic lights and parking lots.

Never did see one... I think there was a foreign dealership a few towns over, though. :p
