I Rode My Bike Today...

I went out yesterday for a big ride in the late afternoon. :D

Ran into some friends....spent just about as much time socializing as I did riding. Met up with my wife towards the end.

That's downright embarrassing, J! It took a lot of courage for you to post that. A geared FULL SUSPENSION bike and such puny numbers. You should be ashamed of yourself

OK, actually I was relieved to see just a touch of normalcy, before you morph back into the relentless riding machine we all know you to be.

I know....right?

To be honest it just felt wrong from the beginning. I only took 1 bottle with me knowing/forcing myself to keep it short.

All these posts from that area are making me think I have to do the Terrible 10,000. It might be my only chance to ride up there this summer!

Broken finger be damned!

Slow day at work yesterday so I grabbed my gear and drove up to Idyllwild to get my mountain fix. Seems that every time I haven't been here for a while, I ask myself why I don't drive up here more often. It is just a little over an hour away.

Idyllwild just freekin rocks. Love the HUB trails by the art school. I went by myself and didn't see one other rider until I got back to the car and saw a small group going out. I got lost as usual since none of the trails are marked and I just ventured out exploring. Somehow I ended up climbing up Optimator and found a new trail up top I have never done before I think called "sleep walker" So many awesome rock features. A few I had to go back for a do-over because I knew I could do them after a look over the other side. And, a few of them I probably shouldn't have attempted by myself as far out alone as I was was, but don't tell Mom. I made it back in one piece and had a thrilling time.

Only did 13 miles and 2000 feet or so, but it felt like double that with all the twisting climbing and ducking under trees and techy rock features. The gnats were the only thing that sucked. I almost broke out the net, but instead just tried to ride faster. As long as i didn't stop too long it was fine.

Great pics Carl!! I have YET to ride Iddy. And I was only an hour away too - still am as a matter of fact.

I'll just have to bug mtbbiker to take me; we planned a ride one Sat but I got sick and couldn't go. :(

You probably want to go with someone who knows the place pretty well, it's really easy to get lost up there. i have been several times and I still get lost. I think next time, I'm going to try and get up there for one of the HUB bike shop's Saturday group rides. Hopefully less gnats early in the morning too.

I suggest you do a ride with Brendon at the HUB Cyclery. He's a great tour guide and rider! He and his wife are awesome folks with a great lil shop! One suggestion tho, if you do a Saturday morning ride with the shop, show up with a small bottle of whisky, the boys love them some whisky in the morn! ;)

I got out in the dirt for the first time tonight post injury; did a simple Mathis to Meadows loop. I figured Meadows was one of the softer downhills in Aliso as far as hand vibration goes.

My hand held up okay. I felt it, but not in a pain way. Oddly enough it was mostly my wrist that I felt, and not where I broke it. So while I won't be setting any PR's down Rock-It on race day, I doesn't look like I'll be unduly risking re-injury by going out too early. So I've got that going for me.

It is nice to be able to get out after work, even if I miss dinner with the kids :P (As long as it isn't every night, else the wife would skin me alive)

Oh ya... and I saw the new herd of goats at the top of Meadows tonight. Someone else linked a picture (Danimal?), but there is always room for more goat pictures?

Another summer day, another after work ride. Mid July and a high temp of 79* Gotta love it! New stuff on bike working great - scary good at times. Ran into some old friends I haven't seen for ten years. I cherish these moments.

Pushing 800 posts...Herz, did you really think you'd take it this far? 8-)

The intention of the thread is to appreciate every ride from the mundane to the ridiculous (ahem J ahem). It does my heart good that the heart and soul of this thread has become what it is. Please appreciate every opportunity you get to ride no matter where, what and how.

A basic Fully Loop - under 12 miles and 932 vertical with a fairly large group. And I enjoyed it. The Fully Loop Gods were taking the evening off - no major injuries this evening.

I was part of this ride also. I got a late start and didn't catch up until after the first half. I guess I need to pay more attention to face and names on the rides.
I was riding a blue 26" Trance.

Did you guys see ChrisPBacon?? Hard to miss - he's the one w a couch for a saddle..... 8-)

So went out last evening and rode. Didn't get a ride in on Weds due to other obligations.

Thursdays are usually my recovery/social cruise with my wife and some other friends.

Other friends are out of town, and my wife didn't want to ride....so I called my buddy that has the same mentality that I do.

Went like this:

Me: "You up for a ride?"
Him: "Yup....what'cha thinking?"
Me: "Open to Suggestions, Suz isn't riding"
Him: "Thinking Blackstar/Sierra Peak/Skyline.....and maybe back out to Sierra Peak again"
Me: "I'm down"

We rolled at 3:45(in the afternoon....as in PM  8-) ) It was hot....it was humid, and the pace was much too fast.

Made Beeks' in :59.

I am a creature of habit. When I do this loop I usually drop Skyline 1st then go out to Sierra Peak. Riding buddy, likes to go the other way. So for me it was a little different hitting Sierra Peak on fresher legs. Dropping down Skyline was surprisingly quiet. Not many people out. Climbing back up, I actually welcomed the headwind....helped keep the temps down...even in the shade. The pace slowed down...at least for me. I also started to have issues with my back tightening up....but I kept this to myself. Back at the turnoff for Sierra Peak, buddy asks "is Sierra Peak gonna happen?" "Yup, not a problem....it'll be a little slower this time, but I will get there".

By now the temps cooled down quite a bit and the breeze was blowing nicely. Ran across a hiker and 2 other bikers out there....way too many people for Sierra Peak. Once at the peak, I was giving buddy crap about a picture he was taking. His response: "I think we need to add in a climb to the Ball, maybe go beyond." Me: "Whatever, I am game for anything".

We pushed on up to the Ball, my back was pretty tight....still keeping that to myself. I don't want to screw up anybody else's ride because of my issues. Stopped and chatted with a couple of guys at the Ball...the break felt good. By now it was 7:45, so we chose to head down before it got dark. Was fun being the rabbit and the turtle. Got back to the truck just at dark. Legs felt good most of the ride.

Ended up at 39 miles/ 6300' accent.

I've got a nascent training plan written up for my push to VQ (post hand injury), and part of that has me riding at lunch every Friday. I'm thankful to work close enough to Aliso that I just ride from work to Canyon View and off I go. Today was my first Friday of that training plan. I decided that I wanted to do Cholla to Rock-It and see how my hand held up, seeing as how I'm two days out from the Aliso Race.

It held up remarkably well, more so than I was expecting. I went slower than I have in the past (obviously), but the thing that I noticed was my wrist strength was weaker than normal, but my hand itself (where the break was) was fine. So that was a welcomed discovery. I still won't be setting a PR on Rock-It at the race on Sunday, but it won't be an 11 minute decent either.

But boy was it hot out there. My Garmin said it got up to 97 degrees at some points. I'm glad it was a short lunch ride!

Hit SS today. The park was empty - seems like all the DHers went to Mammoth for Nationals which left nothing but "goaters" at the park (sorry if this offends anyone - I'm just jealous I can't climb). 8-)
They were a little of a henderence but most were gracious and pulled over so I could pass. It made me joyous to see these XCers hittin the park regardless. I'm all for equal opportunity.
