I Rode My Bike Today...

I rode my bike last night for the first time since I broke my 5th metacarpal at the Enduro in the beginning of June. It was a small 7 mile ride on the bike path near my house, but it was nice to get out again finally. I rode with my (removable) splint on to see how that would feel, and it didn't limit me too much. It was slightly hard to shift into my big gear up front (thumb dexterity was slightly constrained), but otherwise I didn't even notice the splint.

I'm going to get back to it this weekend in earnest, although I'll probably pretend I'm a roady this weekend to limit the handlebar vibration. Get out my 29'er hardtail instead of the Burner and ride the bike path between the Church and Cook's and back. I should be healed up enough to ride the Aliso race on the 19th, if not truly compete. Rock-It (where I was going to make up all my time) is going to be tough until my hand is 100%.

Snuck in a quick ride last night (I've been lacking motivation to ride lately) and toward the end of my ride I finally started to feel good on my bike as I was about to descend one of my favorite connector trails. Right after I clean the first switchback, my rear brake lever pulls all the way to the bar. Boo!!!! Rear brake pads are shot. This is what you get for not checking your equipment out frequently. I just ordered some replacements online as West LA shops never stock small wear items I want the instant gratification of purchasing. Here's to hoping Jenson does their usual amazing job of shipping my orders the same day as I place them and UPS delvers them the next day as I am scheduled to ride Saturday morning.

I looked at my bike rear end-less, in the garage on the work stand today... :(

that's why you need a back up bike. and then another back up bike for the back up bike ;)

Welcome back!

I was wondering when you would make your reappearance! :D

CarlS . . . . . . . . . . I like the way you think...
Just to bring you up to speed with just how awesome Mrs. Watson is . . .

The other day Cathy said, "Mikie! This is no good! You HALF to have two bikes for when this happens!"

I looked down at the ground and said in my most sad and pathetic voice, "Yeahhhhh, your right. I really "should" get another bike I guess..."

This forum is rough to read when you are sidelined with an injury. All of these awesome rides taunting me that I can't go on :)

BTW: Let me know when you want to triple peak attempt, I too saw J's RR on that and was intrigued. I need to get some of my endurance back, but I need to kick my VQ training into high gear.

Excellent... The next two weekends are going to be out for me. Baseball tournaments- all day for the next two Saturdays and Sundays. Ah- the joys of parenthood.
Fortunately, this will force me off the bike, and my broken index finger can start to heal. I rode Whiting/Blackstar/Skyline last weekend with it... Like a fool. It really wasn't a problem, except for the steering, braking, and shifting.

I've been putting off the "crash confession" report, as this particular injury happened while going uphill on a short rocky climb I've done 100 times...

OK, time to start a thread called:

"I injured myself on a routine ride on a nothing section of a trail I've ridden 100 times before..."

Ready - go...

bwhahaha.

At least mine was done racing in an Enduro (herz can be proud of me for that!).

Did I say "uphill"? I really meant... "gnarly downhill"... with lots of rocks, roots, crashed Volkswagens, and a -45% grade.

And, not to get off topic, I did ride my bike today. Only about 12 miles, because I ran into a trail closure on the Tijeras Creek Trail with no exit. Grrrrr....

Ya, riding trails 100 times and bam... ...
ridden the trail a 100 times, always fun but on one ride a little mis-hap and broke 3 ribs in the back. Nice clean break.
The trail was typically some large rocks, a few 4' drops then into some gnarly rough downhill. Then one day it happened. Went on a rock without noticing it was covered with sand. Front slipped off and I went into the rocks! Damn that was a painful couple weeks.
The trail was fence line in El Moro. This was before it was dumbed down to a fairly level, calm twisty trail. :?

I'm not going to complain about a broken finger... Nope! Three broken ribs had to hurt like a $&@;$:$:$:!:!:@("!

Yes it did. Was in the hospital waiting for X ray and the wife asks "where does it hurt.". I said in my back just inside the left shoulder blade.....
Nice poke in the back and she says "here?". I screamed like a little girl and promptly passed out cold. Coming to just as the Nurse comes in, nurse asks
"What happened?". Wife says, " I don't know, he just screamed and passed out"......

If that ain't Love

Wait - nobody started a new thread. Stop talking about injuries immediately and start your own dayum thread!! Sheeesh! Hijackers!!! :x

But threads only get that magical life of their own when Herz starts them. ;-)

What, this isn't a new thread? :D

I rode my bike today - from my car to my favorite mechanic's shop to have some more magic installed. Place your bets people - Danimal, you don't get to vote. I'll give the rest of you a hint, it's not blingy valve stems.

I think it's time to start a Form called "I Rode My Bike Today" as this thread has knocked it out of the park!
Good call Herzinator!

Oh, and apparently I injure myself on routine trails all the time! I have the McGill Bermudaz Triangle... :|

Getting back "ON TOPIC" :D

I rode yesterday....quick loop through the Oaks then on to Blackstar to join in on our normal Thursday night social ride.

Fought a headwind all the way out to Blackstar. Then fought that same headwind most of the way back down from Beek's.

A short spin today just to limber up for tomorrow's self-flagellation by bicycle. Went up UT 153, which is the beginning of the race, and then up FR 122 in the Fishlake National Forest. God's country. Only 13 miles and shy of 800 feet. And according to Strava, I'm slower than Tyler Wren, but faster than Jamie Driscoll on an "Unnamed Road Climb".

That's more water than we have in all of Socal! Good luck tomorrow.... Find your happy place and just keep pedaling!

You should start a thread "guess my new suspension set up".

Just get the blingy valve stems. Way less to worry about.

Shake down ride this evening. Quick spin on my favorite test tracks. Great first impression of toys, but some dialing in (and breaking in) needed. More tomorrow. BTW, riding after work is a blessing we should never take for granted!
