I DIDN'T Ride My Bike Today, Cuzz....

I spent two months in a wheelchair recovering from a rock climbing accident. It was great! But I only had access to a standard hospital wheelchair, and handled like crap on anything other than flat or level surfaces. And I was living in Mammoth at the time, trying to work out around Lake Mary. Haha! Not advised!

I eventually found a long flat straightaway outside of town and drove out there to train. Even there, that hospital wheelchair couldn't handle the crown of the road and continuously turned onto the unpaved shoulder. The solution was to ride right down the center and keep an eye out for traffic, of which there was very little.

I was just getting ready to rent or borrow a racing wheelchair when my doctor relegated me to crutches. Dammit!

It's just possible that a wheelchair race could keep you two from backsliding in your recoveries. No guarantee.. but possible. If I was your coach, I'd vote "No" on canes, crutches, walkers; three-legged races..o_O

I kind of like the work of crutches, even though it’s exhausting:eek:
You must have been a sight in that rolling chair:Roflmao
Do you still climb?

Crutches and wheelchairs are great for upper body strength. I got much stronger after 4 months total + PT. (Rowing machine was good, too.)

I can't imagine what people thought when they saw me rolling down the middle of the road!?! Very little traffic out on the road to Benton, but still at least one vehicle per workout. I'd roll to the shoulder and let 'em pass, but then get back in the middle, lock that centerline between my footrests and go like hell! There was a slight climb at the far end before the turn-around, and the descent would get that funky chair shimmying at 5mph! Yeehaw!

I continued to climb while I lived in Mammoth. I had to stay close to the ground with bouldering, cuz my broken feet didn't do well with jumping/landing. But I was able to top rope, follow and lead, and I did that until I moved down to OC and would've had to drive to climb. Almost put up a big climbing wall in my new townhome with it's high ceilings, but moved on to road and mountain biking, which I could do right from home. Sadly, my trail running days were over, which I continue to miss.. 20 years later.

Making the best of it during an injury speeds healing IMO, good for you!
TWO broken feet..sheet, I can’t imgaine! Trail running is deep in my bones, giving that up would be cruel and unusual punishment, sorry you’re running days are over.

Just got back from my third visit with Dr. Bob. Told me it would be a miracle if I’m back on my bike within 4 months...:coffee:

So...
@mountaingirl sara ,I accept your wheelchair race challenge down McGill. I uh... have been practicing in all fairness.
