Foes Dream Build, what would you do?

Dusty pm'd me this morning to see how my build was coming. My frame won't be done for another week or two. So cool for him to reach out. I have not had time to spend an afternoon at the Path to get my fixin's ordered (Crazy busy at work and I am treading water hard to keep up) ... so I thought I would pull a dusty and open-source this bad boy.

Yes, this is a total ripoff of @dustyyoungblood 's thread, but I did not think that it would be cool to hijack his thread, so I started another one. If admin thinks that this should be migrated to @dustyyoungblood 's thread, more power to you.

The bike: Foes Mixer Enduro; The Color (for @herzalot) White. Sticker scheme color: Not sure

Ideal: Light as possible; strong as possible.

Limiting principals: None (I am pretending that money is no object...)

I am thinking:

xx1 drivetrain and shifters (not eagle because I do not like big jumps in gearing, and I don't need anything grannier than a 32x42... love my the XTR on my Pivot, but it is just not that durable)

@dustyyoungblood suggested the new Magura trail brakes (very strongly)

Enve 60/40 wheels with DT Swiss Hubs (I just really like them on my B-son)

Fork: Pike 170

Crank Brothers Enduro TI pedals (I know a guy...)

Thoughts about dropper, bars, stems, cranks, etc.?

Thanks for playing and I TRULY appreciate any input that folks may have here.

Enve bars...just due to the fact I'm running them on both bikes. Stem...Syntace. They are reasonably light and have some nice hardware. Cranks...XX1 or X01. If you're a bit more weight conscious then go Race Face. As for dropper...I'm running a Reverb. If I was to do it all over again...I would give the Fox dropper a try.

I don't really see much variance once you move into the more upper tier stuff. It pretty much comes down to what brand you like best.

Unexpected bonus of this bar/stem combo is the "RSR" logo showing through the opening of the Syntace stem.:D:D

Race Face Next cranks are XC light and DH strong.
That was my first thought. I've put literally thousands of miles on them, bikepacking and trail riding. No performance issues. The protective clear pieces started to fall off early on, so I peeled em off and embraced the shoe rub. I think the spider/DM ring mounting system on XX1 is pathetic. Three dinky bolts. I've seen (read: felt) a DM ring disintegrate on a XX1 crank. RF has a ring that you use a BB tool to crank down. Way more secure to my uneducated thinking.

A mechanical dropper.

Stem brand maybe depends on what you want/need rise/length-wise. Start with a cheapie or parts-bin unit in the ballpark to help zero in. I'm curious about carbon fiber, having just swapped my alloy bars for CF and noting the vibration damping. If I could get the right length and rise, I'd probably be in for Enve. For alloy I like old-school Thompson Masterpiece and Syntace.

Without a doubt...OURY LOCK-ONS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Relish agonizing over the deets, Strandbro! :)

Pedals: Ti spindles scare me on an aggressive trail bike.

Bars: Enve Minaar Bar 800mm....but in all realities, a carbon DH bar from any of the major players will work well. Just find the one that fits you: sweep/rise/bend

Cranks: Carbon are not really all that important. If you want that flashy look, then agree....the RF Next Carbons are nice.

Brakes: Like to keep it simple.....Shimano. XTR Trails or XT's. Reliable, silly simple, pads are widely available.

Drivetrain: XX1 is the way to go if you are gonna stay with 11 spd. Again, no need to complicate it with Di2. Keep in mind that going to Eagle means that you can run a bigger ring up front. So even though you don't need anything spinnier than a 32x42....the 50t would allow you to run a 34 or 36. Just a thought.

Stem: Figure out was size you need. I don't like to drop a bunch of coin on stems anymore. The $ vs. gram isn't that great. The last couple I have done have been Truvativ T20. Light enough and hard to beat for $30.

Dropper: Like Hertz said....it's a crap shoot. KS has some nice posts....but they are a small company. If and when you have to send your post back....even though they are in Foothill Ranch, it's gonna take a while. RS sells all the service parts for the Reverb. The Thomson looks nice, but is not user serviceable. The Fox Transfer might be the "it" post to have.

You got the mixer "enduro" version, and you're gonna have a big ole 29 wheel up there.... go for a Lyrik or Fox 36 for the stiffness. Maybe even in the "boost" version of the fork/front hub to add some more stiffness... Always a personal decision to go for lighter or heavier...
Advanced congrats, that should be a slayer what ever parts you put on it...

I have both a reverb and a KS Lev. The Reverb has been flawless since day one. I have had to replace the cartridge in the KS Lev once, but at least it's fairly inexpensive and is user replaceable. For stems, I've always been a Thomson fan. Not cheap or light, but they've always been bullet proof for me. I have the Next carbon cranks on two bikes. Stupid expensive and probably not much different in performance than the XT cranks that I had before, but you will drop half a pound compared to most other aluminum cranks. I bought both on sale and would do it again. Congrats on the new bike build. I'm jealous. I REALLY like the process of sourcing parts and building a frame up.

Without a doubt...OURY LOCK-ONS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Relish agonizing over the deets, Strandbro! :)

No bullshit!!!!! every time I tried to run another grip other than oury lock on I ended up throwing them away after 2-3 ride. The TLD lock ones are almost acceptable. The new Ergon would be the only feasible grip other than Oury. Why? The oury rubber is soft slow rebounding and removes vibration and less have fatigue. The diameter is larger than some grips, I have large hands so that really helps. The grooves are deep and edges of knobs are sharp providing great rotational resistance.

SO much amazing 411 IMTB'ers! I really appreciate it. Will do research on the suggestions and make some decisions over the weekend... then send in my build sheet to the boyz!

I will keep everyone posted. Some of these suggestions I would not have thought up on my own. Seriously appreciate the time and thought that you guys put into this.

If you ride with me, you can ride it.

Thanks,

!

Thoughts about dropper, bars, stems, cranks, etc.?
Dropper: 9.8 Fall Line.

Bars: Renthal Carbon Fatbar or Fatbar Lite depending on width preference, but those carbon Syntace look pretty sweet too.

Stem: Thomson Elite X4.

Cranks: RaceFace SixC if you want carbon. XTR or RaceFace Turbine if you want aluminum.

Anyone's thoughts on lyric RC v RCT3? I can't tell the difference.

Thinking 170 w boost.
I would do the 160-170 RCT3 w Boost. 170 on a 29er is a freight train/snowplow/monster truck of a front end. I would do Boost just because - why not? Lateral stiffness is your friend with those numbers. RCT3 because the options come in handy, especially on the death-march climbs you do. You can run it pretty soft for the fast chunk (Rock-It, Stairs, Car Wreck), then use the middle position to firm it up for steep descents with serious compressions (Art School, Joplin), then use the firmest setting for asphalt climbs. I don't think it locks out, per se. The RC won't let you do that, so you will need to achieve your best compromise with air pressure, volume reducing tokens and presumably, a low-speed compression dial.

I just read that the RC is original equipment spec only and not available after-market, so it may be a moot point.

Interesting @Redman ... thanks for that one. I have two reverbs. One has been rebuilt three times. The other has been rock solid... go figure.

Going with Fox X2 shock per Foes recommendation. Optimized for the Mixer Enduro.

Also, as to paint scheme. I was going to go white with black decals, but when I got the call a few hours ago on the final paint decision (because my frame is DONE!) I went with Lime Green with Shimano Blue decals.-- because go big or go home!

Decisions starting to happen.

Thanks for the continued 411!
