Endurance Nutrition

I went back and re-read the beginning of the thread. I thought for sure at that time that I would need to supement with food from a mental perspective. That hasn't been the case so far.

The other thing I'm noticing is that I feel better after the ride ends. I don't have the urge to run in the house and eat everything in the fridge. I'm sure this is due to the steady intake, as opposed to pulling over mid-ride at odd intervals and eating. Time to order more, and I'll use Jaime's coupon code!
Yea, this is some surprisingly effective stuff. I had my doubts, I put it to the test, and it has really proven itself to be no worse than plain water + food. In fact, it's easier, simpler, and isn't as messy as I thought. Seems to be less weight overall too, since I don't seem to need as much water.

I mix up a gallon jug (Rubbermaid MixMate), and just refill and put it in the fridge, so I can just grab it before I head out. No need to clean anything really. No mold except in the threads of the caps really, but water doesn't really touch that and a damp towel wipes it up quick. Mixing up my own makes it cheap enough that I can take it on every ride, and it turns every intended short ride into a longer ride, since it doesn't feel like I've worked myself with such a brief ride.

I mix and drink according to the studies that report that you can absorb about 1 carb per minute.

Ordered a large container of the naked... And the coupon code still works! Thanks, Jaime...

I consider myself very lucky. My wife won't let me touch a paint brush. Something about the paint "ain't supposed to fly".

Thats funny ! Hey but check this out, she doesn't know I'm painting at all... with so much free time in my hands... one day pedaling solo in skyline I was talking to myself... You know what I feel like painting my baby princess room... and the next thing you know... it was the whole interior, will post pics in free zone as soon I'm done...
Back to the Original Post... I tried the Kind Jalapeño and its Freaking good !!! sweet, spicy and nutty..... its like a party of flavors in my mouth!!!

66 miles in El Moro...(3) 24oz bottles of GU Roctane, (4) Scoops per bottle, (4) Salted Watermelon Gels, supplemented with straight water via Camelbak. 7 hours of ride time. No bonking. Worked out to be about 250 cal/hr average, and around 20oz/hr of water...and lost 3% of body weight during ride (166-5=161). No GI issues, although it was a mellow pace with temps in the high 70's and overcast/partly cloudy skies in El Moro. Recovery was (3) bananas and (2) servings of GU Recovery Chocolate...spread out over (3) different shakes of 20 oz each, taken every 30 minutes. No cramps, and very few of the "alien" muscle twitching in the legs that can happen after a long ride when the muscles continue to fire sporadically. I'll edit to add my recovery overnight and ride on Sunday...will follow the same nutrition plan in the Oaks...but probably not as long as ride.

...I guess what they drill into you into the military does no good, in regards to downing fluids to prevent heat stroke...While standing at attention, it finally caught up to me... I was caught swaying and leaning at attention, and was pulled out to sit in AC and given a drink. I think it was more not having breakfast in this case, though (breakfast is a good source of electrolytes, esp if you're only on fresh water).

It's been documented that locking the knees at attention will cause some people to keel over, and fairly quickly. Regardless of fluid and food intake, and despite RH and temp. I don't know how many times I watched this happen in boot camp. Not so much on board ship, since sailors aren't known for spending time at attention after boot camp. We're kinda smarter than that ;)

Tailwind, and only Tailwind, for my 51 miles and 6500 feet today...

I'm digging the Tailwind too! Especially this one! :Roflmao

Tailwind, and only Tailwind, for my 51 miles and 6500 feet today... The nicest part was having a Tailwind slushie at the top of Blackstar, as the last frozen bottle melted. Awesome...

It's really nice to have empty pockets for rides like this...
Never was a fan of freezing the bottle. Made it inflexible, didn't melt quick enough when I wanted it, and risked damaging the bottle and the seals, especially if the flat bottom of the bottle "rounded" and it tipped over and the fluid made it to the top and then froze.

Except I don't worry about that with a $7 plasitc bottle. They are consumable items.

Then again I find certain powder mixes don't freeze well....they seem to seperate and become crystalized...thus less effective.

So I'm the only one who mixes it, puts it in the bottle cage, throws the bike in the back of the truck, drives to the ride start, and then proceeds to drink it as needed at ambient temp??? Or rides to the ride start, etc. Cold fluids while riding? WTF??

Cold water in these 90+ deg temps is a treat, and feels oh so good when drinking!
During the rest of the year, it room temp.

I don't normally freeze them, but that was a long hot ride, and I ended up 25+ miles from home... All three bottles that were frozen were completely melted by the turnaround point. I also don't keep them very long- only a couple months, usually. I just ordered a few new ones with my last Tailwind order. :)

SShhhh.......I just used a 20% of coupon for Tailwind. If you've ordered before use code; upgrade20 says only works on 30 and 50 serving bags.
As a repeat customer, it allowed me to use this coupon today even though is "expired" in Dec-2014.

Bought 3 bags of 30 servings, unflavored, mandarin and berry caffeinated ( I like to spike my juice!).
Danimal is now a happy animal.
