Went for a family hike up Holy Jim this morning. Just as we got to the gate, two bikes came down. A vintage kinda guy and what looked to be his grandson. The guy had a Felt fat tire bike. My family hadn't seen one before and was commenting on how cool it was.
Then I noticed the battery pack....:bang:.. A Felt Lebowske.
Then I glanced at the teen's 29er....another battery pack :bang:.
The urge to jump on the soapbox was strong, but with great effort, I restrained myself.
Soon they were out of sight and the sky became blue again.

I bow :giggle: to your restraint powers! I'm not so sure I could have done that...
(...the sky became blue again. Ha ha Ahhhh, love that!)

I love this topic, it plays out the same every time. Lot's of interesting insecurities on display.

A bike is a tool. Your lifestyle is yours, and it's safe whether someone else is "earning the ride" or not. Downhill Strava times will certainly be safe, at any rate :Roflmao

I can't find any information on how that works. Just says you CAN get $81 a month...but for what? Do I write a letter saying "I rode my bike today"? Do I get a debit card? Do I turn in receipts for bike tires when I do my taxes? Only thing I saw mentioned was it was a credit offered through your company. My company used to have a program (I don't know if they still do) that reimbursed a certain amount of money for riding public transit...but not for bicycles.

I think your company would have to be a participant in the program in order for individuals to benefit. Talk to your HR.

You should get a commuter credit.
I was just looking at this.
That one was phased out a few years ago, at a monthly limit of $20.
The new one is just a proposal so far.
Yes, your company would have to sign up for it.
My didn't for bikes, but does for mass transit and parking - up to $270 a month each for those. Toll roads and bridges are also excluded.
I do use the transit one occasionally when I use Metrolink or the bus.

Even better, we don't have HR!

Outsourced, all done by phone :bang:
Maybe you can don your most prominent cycling kit and knock on the front door of the U.S. House of Representatives and ask how you can apply? Sucks that the most deserving HOoLiGaN here has limited Ways and Means to receive the benefit. I can imagine there will be low-income folk receiving money from this program to fund their bicycles, which could be staged in a garage that also had a car and stolen shopping carts.

Yeah, we have the $20 version. And it's taxable.

To me that's not worth the paperwork and audit issues.

They don't really want you to avoid your car, they just want to sound good.

Yea well you are also the type of person to climb and descend Harding, so I won’t go looking.

26 times per year! Love it. For a Sunday morning workout... can't be beat :) Of course it ain't for everyone, but there's something about being in that zone... total silence while you just burn cals all the way up to the ridge, and then an effortless descent back to your car. Plenty of time to do bigger rides all around the CNF, but if you only have 2.5 hours for max caloric burn, with views to the Pacific most of the way... I miss it terribly.

What I DON'T miss is the government's current pork barrel bill trying to convince us that going even FURTHER into Federal debt in order to subsidize the e-bike industry with a tax-payer funded 15% rebate makes any sense whatsoever.

My stepdad rides a cheater bug zapper overpriced contraption and I ride with him on occasion. He knows hell hasn't froze over so I'll never ride one but there's still plenty of sh!t talk while he hands me my azz on the way up hill and I hand him his on the way back down.

Trying to avoid the political rants, but the eCars get a lot more subsidy than eBikes.

Of course oil companies have been getting way more for way longer, so it's hard to keep track of who is getting the biggest hand out and who to be angriest at.

I hear you, but I consider e-cars to be on a different playing field, since regulars cars burn gas, release CO2 emissions, etc. I think the e-bike industry has chameleon super-powers, and is very adept at changing who they appear to be - depending who they are talking to. To us - they try to portray themselves as the ultimate downhill and wilderness machine, and it's all about maxing your off-road entertainment. To law-makers they portray themselves as an option for handicapped people, or for commuters who will gladly trade in their car for an e-bike... if only they were 15% less expensive :)

But it's all pork... and if you put a plate of pork in front of me, I'm probably going to help myself to it. Heaven forbid someone suggest that this country has eaten enough pork for a few generations...
