Electric mountain bikes

I now bring to order the imtbtrails MTB Secret Society Coalition of Common Sense!
Can we ALL agree that ALL E-Bikes have motor assist to some degree?
If we do indeed agree than they are a motor bike.
Thus motorized bikes should not be allowed on any trail system that motorized vehicles are banned from.

Land Managers and Bicycle Industry Call on IMBA to Study Impacts of Electric Mountain Bikes

Consumer interest in electric-powered mountain bikes (eMTBs) continues to rise in North America. In response to this trend, IMBA and the Bicycle Products Suppliers Association (BPSA) have agreed to conduct a study of the impacts, both environmental and social, that eMTBs can have on natural-surface trails and trail users. IMBA will facilitate the study with the assistance of qualified researchers, with the intention of producing objective data that can be used to provide recommendations for trail management and spur additional research.

"Little to no scientific information is currently available evaluating the social, environmental and trail impacts related to electric mountain bike use,” said Garrett Villanueva, Assistant Forest Engineer, U.S. Forest Service. “Many questions have emerged, including how pedal-assist electric mountain bikes will evolve, how use of those machines should be regulated and the possibility of user conflicts. IMBA’s proposal to evaluate use and impacts could be a step in the right direction to better understand this new technology."

“From the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management to state and local agencies, we have repeatedly heard from land managers that they are uncertain about the best strategies for classifying and overseeing this new form of recreation,” said Mike Van Abel, IMBA’s executive director. “It is easy to understand their confusion—eMTBs visually resemble traditional mountain bikes, and the power output is typically significantly less than with other forms of motorized recreation.”

Jill Van Winkle, an IMBA Trail Solutions Project Manager who holds a Master's degree in Environmental Science and Management, will manage the study, working in coordination with the Bureau of Land Management and other federal land management agency partners. Regarding environmental impacts, this study seeks to better understand how Class 1 and Class 2 eMTBs compare with those of traditional mountain bikes and gasoline-powered dirt bikes in terms of trail erosion.

"One study will not create a scientific consensus," said Van Winkle. "But it can go a long way in helping us understand the range of impacts and guide the development of best management practices for trails." Van Winkle also notes that the study effort will include a review of existing regulations at the federal, state and local levels, and will document current management strategies.

Larry Pizzi, the chairman of the BPSA’s committee on electric bicycles, said that IMBA is the right partner for this study. “We have heard from multiple sources, including federal land mangers, that IMBA is the only organization with the credibility to produce this data. We are committed to learning from this study and helping guide the development of eMTBs in a way that respects traditional mountain biking and ensures no loss of existing or future access.”

Well, it's nice to know that larger entities are looking into the matter.

I don't care what anybody says, I think they're rad and will absolutely end up buying one once they have em dialed. That first pic of the Santacruz, not gonna lie, chubbed up a little.

Already seeing skinny but deep peel out marks on the trails, where it looked like the e-bike rider held the front brake and opened up the throttle, typically at spots that are good regroup points. Sh!t's gonna be ruined by the few asshats out of many...

At this point, I'm thinking ebikes should be kept fat or kept on the road, preferably with pedal-assist over a throttle.
 
Must be a home brew like the ones I've built. Very few ebikes can rooster tail. Unless the rider is holding the back wheel off the ground a little. :lol:
 
Just wait until e-horses come out next year! One benefit of that is the e-piles left on the trail should be less messy.

Was riding whiting last week and a guy was zipping through on an ebike. Was his first time ever riding a bike on a dirt trail. Had no idea about any possible use restrictions, no helmet, smooth tires etc. I didn't want to be there when the inevitable trip to the ER took place.
 
We have an E bike( Prodecotech) in the shop and I agree with everyone it has no place on the trail, but this thing hauls ass. It will go 28 mph which is pretty fast for a 60 pound bicycle. I really could of used it on the long uphill on Golden Eagle though. Most people who buy these things are usually someone who has a DUI and needs transportation to get around.
 
I doubt that hub motor will help much going up hill. That 28mph on pavement would probably = 3mph or even 0 mph on a dirt incline. It's simply the folly of direct drive hub motors. Well, you might be able to do short hills with momentum alone, but mid-drive is the way to go for climbing.

Those Prodecos are fantastic for commuting, but not a whole of of e-bikes are "trail rated." What I mean by that is, anything south of $3k (unless you build it yourself) is just gonna fall apart if you try to bomb down chutes... hell, even some parts of the Floop. hahaha

I think the majority of the dust we see on e-bikes is from sitting in the garage for long periods of time rather than dirt from any trail. :lol:

It'll be funny to see those DUI riders start getting BUIs. :mrgreen:
 
Hub motor was hauling up dreaded hill in whiting when I saw it! So, if he climbed dreaded on first trip in dirt,....

I could barely ride 5 level miles when first got back in riding

It must have been a geared hub motor rather than direct drive. That makes them climb a bit better, but they're still super inefficient. It requires a ton of amps to get these things going up hill, 5 miles of incline with no pedaling probably depleted his battery.

Then again, if he was pedaling, he could be using the e-power to "flatten the hill" so to speak and get more range out of it. I've been able to pull 50 miles out of a puny 8Ah battery going cycling speeds. I can see a talented rider being able to do the same with a hub drive motor either direct or geared.

I think the future of e-mtb is going to be based more on rental fleets at resorts rather than in people's garages. On the consumer end, it'll probably be similar to Brookstone massage chairs.
