Where do You Want to Retire... and Why?

so I have been thinking about being transient and living in multiple states when I retire. The good ones have no income tax, the others will not even hardly know I am there except to send a property tax bill to someplace like NV, Wa, or Tx
Booked Flights for July 7th to South Dakota. Cathy and I are flying out there for a week to check out the Black Hills in the very South West Corner near Rapid City.
South Dakota is rated #2 for retirement.

The Black Hills has networks of trails. TrailForks... Boulder Colorado is only 6 hours away...:sneaky:

No income Tax, no State Tax, No retirement Tax (no 401k tax), Sales Tax is about 4.5%.
Vehicle Registration is $70 bucks per year. No Smog checks, but there are tax reductions and incentives for driving and maintaining Eco friendly vehicles.
No State fuel tax on propane provided you buy from state licensed dealers.

South Dakota is open carry and you can also obtain a CCW valid and renewable every 5 years. A Regular permit for $10 bucks, Gold Card for $70 bucks covers an additional 37 states, and there is an Enhanced Permit available for $100 bucks. All other permits from other states are accepted in South Dakota.

Who needs smog checks? Maybe a dome can be built over South Dakota.

CenCal coast being the closest and most obvious, but I know that's already in your sights. Asheville, NC would be a very worthy contender if you're willing to move across the country.
If crime is a big factor for you, OC is as good as anywhere. much of rural America is one big opioid-induced property crime spree. Every place I consider, I look up the crime data and say “nope.”

I was thinking to myself it all depends on what you are absolutely sick of , and can not live with anymore, leaving it behind and finding new and exciting adventure, and making the best of what another area has to offer? The good has to outweigh what you are running from? It’s a bit of a gamble but one has to hope for getting it right?

Seems like it's in bad faith considering the rules you want everyone to play by.
Not following you. I'm talking about Smog. What are you talking about?
I'm going by evidence that precedes me. I like what I see.

Good friends retired to South Dakota. Mt bikers. You may recall my wife’s friend Juli who was airlifted from Oaks a few years ago, and her husband Scott - a solid rider who fell in love with a Bronson. They are building a house on a large parcel.

They are lonely, and the winters are harsh. But they are riding fat bikes in snow. I wouldn’t move there myself, but to each his own.

BS, but whatever, it's your forum.
Well you got the second part correct, Brett.

The part you are getting wrong is there is less particulates in the South Dakota sky for obvious reasons, less people, less vehicles, and they don't have an over burden of regulation in that arena. They provide incentives for people to keep and maintain clean burning vehicles. Therefore I get to make intelligent choices. You okay with that so far?

So when it was pointed out no doubt in jest, that SD should be sheltered from the rest of the US, I pointed out the real health issue is California as the worse provider of said particulates, also for obvious reasons.

Edit: I'm thinking you can get an exciting career in the fact checking business. It seems to be real popular right now!

Anywhere where there is less people, more quiet, less car thefts, more trails, 4 not too extreme seasons, and good fishing.
Yes! State boundaries matter less.

@Mikie... When one has to brag that Boulder is 6 hours away, something is very wrong. :p:cool: Your best hope is that it's too far for Boulderites to visit your town. :D And, the evils you know are better than the ones you don't. :cautious:

Ha hah! I have never ridden in Colorado (other than from Fruita heading into Utah) and thinking that is a felony to miss out on the Colorado goods. I doubt that Boulderites will trek up my way to ride the Black Hills trails when they have MTB heaven right in their backyard. Be awesome to putt down there and get me some of that!

I just paid my property taxes on my Louisiana Estate. 11 acres with a house $110.00. To bad its in La. I would live there 6 months of the year if they cancel income tax, they have talked about it. Bike riding is all road. They have a 27 mile bike path that has a draw bridge over the bayou. I am the old man of the mountain and will need to figure this out somehow. I liked that place Mikie found around Beaver. I may wander up that way on my vacation soon. Still like west of Bend but Ore is so California like in laws and taxes.
Happy trails in the west county
