VQ and CC?

Can we get a roll call on who is signing up tonight?

I'm still on the fence for one or the other. CC sounds fun because people keep telling me that "You can race CC more because you don't have the WHT climb", and I keep telling them "I don't recall having any extra energy in the bank when I crossed the peak in VQ". :D

I will be signing up for my 5th VQ tonight. I am not sure I am excited about going up WHT again but it always feels great to finish.

Yeah, I saw that this morning too. I'm pretty bummed because Motorway was a fun break in the climbing, but it was still challenging enough where you had to keep focused and thinking.

The only other option I can think of is heading out on the main divide to 4C, which would pretty much suck.

In, CC #4 for me.

Didn't hear about the closures until after registration. Motorway closure may have affected my interest in this race.

Here's what I suspect will happen:

1-year closures are the norm. At best, I would expect the closure to remain in place to keep traffic out of the area until the soil/vegetation stabilizes a little bit so that the public isn't trampling off-trail. At best, it might open up for the event only a few weeks before the event, or just for the event.

Alternate is to descend Eagle and up Bedford....that bypasses almost all of the fire-damaged area...stats work out to about the same. Support logistics become more difficult, but still not impossible. But it would also mean approaching some landowners and other jurisdictions...or.....Maybe it's something really cool that I don't even know about. You know, and uh, and I started feeling... what? What, I thought we were in the trust tree in the nest, were we not?

This is what we were told the other day:

In regards to the fire:

People have been asking if the recent fire will affect the 2015 Pow Wow. BAER teams are currently working to limit the damage the fires have caused related to future erosion and the access created for off-road vehicles by the loss of vegetation.

The fire will not affect the event. As with the last devastating fire we had, as a permit holder we are allowed into any closed area for our event. The public access out side of the support vehicles may be denied, but we will be allowed to have the event.

Thanks for the info mtnbikej. Hard to imagine this event without motorway....just signed up for VQ #2 tonight...

cc #2 for me . rigid singlespeed hope its perfect like the last one. the music and food at the finish was great!

Just got an e-mail from WS notifying of the change in route. No Motorway and Maple Springs, straight through on Main Divide.

It said Motorway will be closed for a year.

My understanding is that Maple Springs was unaffected... Any idea when that will open to bikes again?

They wanna keep people out of the burn area.....but that logic is flawed, since they allow you to access Main Divide from Beeks all the way to top of Motorway.

I called up the ranger and just wanted to share, she said that Maple Springs is closed to ALL TRAFFIC and will likely remain closed for at least a year. From the USFS fire map it looked like maple really didn't get burnt (as opposed to motorway which was right in the middle of the fire), so maybe later on they will open it up later in the year depending on impact assessment?

Bummer those trails will not be in the pow wow.

Bummer. Oh well. Is that section of the main divide back open yet (Motorway to 4C)? I've only ridden it the other direction and it seemed pretty gnarly. It should make it interesting and quite a bit shorter. Maybe 8 miles or so?

I think it is going to shorten it up a little less than 4 miles. Me personally, I would rather ride the extra 4 miles than the stretch from the top of Motorway to 4 corners. Looks like I have two good hike a bikes this year for my Single Speed.

Not 8 miles shorter.....

Down MW, up MS 10.5 miles
MD...MW to 4C 6 miles

Elevation will be less....but not easier.

This is disappointing.
I ride this each year in hopes to improve my time.
Going to make the MS pitstop a challenge.

You mean we don't descend motorway twice normally? I just checked the mileage on Strava again and I have no idea how I was off by that much. ha ha

but yeah, I think it will be a bit shorter, but harder.

Yeah, the aid station will now be at 4 Corners, which means we will need to start the race with a lot more water and fuel. By the time we all get to the aid station most of the hard stuff is over. If the Warriors Society could somehow get some water to the top of motorway that would be a huge help.

If they eliminate 4miles off the CC (and some elevation) I'll be disappointed as well.... This might be the best year to try and finish a VQ.
I never road from motorway to 4 corners, but I can see some dramatic time saving (maple spring up to 4 corners aprox. 75min for me).

A CC with only one big climb (4 corners to the pick is not a cake walk) and one decent will not be the same...

Hopefully the Rwanda 50 will stay 50 miles (and might prove to be a bigger challenge then the CC this year).

IMO the ride down Motorway and up Maple Springs is easier than the stretch across Main Divide. Those climbs going up to 4 corners are no joke and very difficult, without some rain they will be a bike hike a bike for most riders.

Even when they are in good shape, they will still be a HAB for most riders. That being said, I see a record number of finishers based on the time cutoff of 11:30 @ 4 Corners.
