The Fire Thread

I find it hard to believe that the ground and fuel is not soaking wet out at the beach from the dense marine layer/low that is passing overhead now. It's wet here in the foothills.

Ever wonder why the USFS posts "Extreme Fire Danger" during a rain event?

It may be wet on the outside, but it never penetrates to dampen the inside, which means it is susceptible to combustion even then.

It's how we get fires that don't go out in the drizzle. Blame it on this guy...

I must not be paying close attention because I have never heard "extreme fire danger" stated during a wet period.

There was a big smoke cloud in the Arcadia area foothills yesterday afternoon, but then later in the day it was knocked down. Didn't read or hear anything about it but it sure looked threatening from here.

Glad that one got extinguished quickly. It was a the heart of the LCWP trail system between the illegal trail we call sh####r and Camarillo. Not too far from Lizard. Since it was next to the 73, I am going to take a wild guess that it was started by a careless passing motorist throwing something incendiary out of the car window.

The Tumbleweed Fire... Looks to be around 1,000 acres now, after starting just off I-5 near Gorman yesterday afternoon.

South Coast AQMD issued this map of potential smoke impact yesterday afternoon. Looking at the Purple Air map right now, it appears the entire 210 corridor is seeing the impact.

Maybe we’ll get lucky and the fire will burn a cannabis farm.

I have been cruzin the costal sage scrub at a snails pace. Yep everything is dry and many a bush has given up the ghost. BUT the grass is sparse so the fires will tend to be small until El Santa Anna Returns. Then wind driven cold dry air will still have an easy time. But until then which is late Sept or mid October we should be rather good with most fires being less than 10 acres.

The Fly fire, still at 1650 acres, is part of the Dixie Complex, which is at 167k acres with 18% line containment.

Conditions look challenging today. Despite yesterday’s smoke forecast, there is haze and smoke throughout north Tahoe/Truckee. I’ll forfeit the ride and wish firefighters a safe day and property owners good fortunes.
