The Automobile Thread

In 2005 I purchased my first Titan. I did all of the research online. I found the exact truck I wanted at Antelope Valley Nissan in Palmdale. I wrote down the VIN number and headed out. As I was pulling up to the dealership I noticed a lot full of Titans. There had to be at least 40 of them. I was hoping to find my future Titan before being seen by a salesperson but no such luck. I told him which truck I was looking for but he kept insisting I look at the ones that were easily accessible. Mine turned out to be right in the middle of the lot. I matched up the VIN numbers and told the guy this is the one I want. While looking at the window sticker I noticed a $5k dealer markup. I questioned the salesman about it and he said something about demand. WTF? You have 40 Titans that have been sitting here for who knows how long. Not to worry. I used Costco's auto buyers program and paid $100 over dealer invoice. It cracks me up though that they would add a markup to a vehicle that wasn't selling. Here's an old pic of the Titan hooked up to the toy hauler.

Not to insult some on this board, I know at least one of you has one ,but I don’t get the love for gray vehicles. We had a hand-me-down ‘80 Buick Century that color. I always said they forgot to paint it. Why the gray love???
Blue/gray? Green/gray?
Rant over.
2005 Nissan Titan....Smoke not gray. :whistling:
2013 Scion FR-S....Asphalt not gray. :whistling:
2015 Toyota Tundra and 2020 Toyota C-HR....Magnetic Gray....got me there.
I've always liked black but after having owned two in that color, I wanted something dark but not black. I actually like gray.

Took delivery of my Corolla Hatchback today. Gotta say it looks a lot better in person and I think I'm really going to enjoy this car. I've only driven it home from the dealership so far but I had a chance to punch it a couple of times. The throttle response is instant in sport mode and it actually gets up and goes. It has a 10spd Direct Shift-CVT transmission with Launch Gear.
From Toyota....Engaged when the vehicle is at rest, Launch Gear is used solely to help the vehicle accelerate up to speed more quickly and efficiently from a stop. Once the vehicle has reached a speed where the CVT transmission is more efficient, the launch gear is disengaged and the transmission functions like a CVT. I really only bought it for commuting but.....

This guy is a goofball but he actually explains the new CVT transmission pretty well.

I don’t mind metallic gray at all. I have a dark gray metallic vehicle right now. It is the enamel type gray that I don’t like. To each his own, but it is not for me. Others obviously like it so they shouldn’t care how I feel.

Are you talking about Nardo Grey? I think it was first made popular by Audi, now its played out as everyone's done a version.

In NZ we'd call that colour something else, I think the best way I can think of translating it would be something akin to "Elsinore racing grey". Apologies to people from Elsinore but that place is a dump and you all have two heads :D
Ideally you need a misted guide coat of black spray paint to get the full racing grey effect.

I did have a racing grey edition Triumph mk2 sedan at one point in my youth, resplendent with anime girls in bikinis and cartman from south park hand-drawn on the hood. Gave the cops a giggle whenever they'd pull me over.

I just looked up Nardo and yes that is the one - and all the variations.
The funny thing is that I have that color on my bike - an Intense Primer. But Primers are two colors. Gray below and on my bike, yellow above. The contrast works.
It sounds like you have had some fun cars.

Congrats!
That Scotty Kilmer guy is a weirdo and kind of clickbait-y. I do enjoy his videos though.

Rant over.

I am guilty of a gray vehicle, actually two currently.

2019 Tacoma TRD in MGM
2013 VW Jetta in Platinum grey metallic

It’s a great color, and keeps clean for a long time.

OK Here we go:
'71 Monte Carlo - Gold with black vinyl roof
'70 Volvo Wagon - White (with rust)
'78 Ford Fiesta - White
'87 Nissan King Cab 4x4 (4 cyl) - Red
'91 Nissan King Cab 4x4 (6 cyl) - White
'91 Nissan Pathfinder - Blue
'96 Nissan Pathfinder - Red
'00 Nissan X Terra - Yellow
'04 Porsche Cayenne S - Green
'06 Nissan X Terra - "Night Armor" (aka gray)
'04 Audi Allroad - Blue
'10 Audi Q5 - White
'18 Audi Q5 - Blue

Final score on my side (not counting wife's) 4 white, 3 blue, 2 red 3 other
Throw in wife's cars and oh wow - she's had a lot since we've been married. Stand by...
Gray, red, green, blue, white, black, blue, gray, blue, blue, white, white = 4 blue, 3 white, 2 gray, 3 other
Total = 7 blue, 7 white, 3 red, 3 gray, 2 green 1 black 1 gold, 1 yellow

Fascinating topic! I have already established that I prefer colorful bikes - even though 87.65% of mt bikes are black or gray.

Yes, list time again! Copied and pasted from before, now with colors:

87 VW Scirocco 16v - Black
1990 Eagle Talon TSI AWD - Red
1995 Honda Accord EX (had this car for 9 years - it was a dark time) - Gold (with the god-awful gold badges)
2006 Scion TC (first new car - my last manual transmission) - Black Cherry Pearl
2010 Subaru Outback 2.5 - Sky Blue Metallic
2015 Subaru Outback 3.6 - Twilight Blue Pearl
2016 Audi SQ5 - Sepang Blue Pearl (bright)
2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Offroad - Silver
2019 Audi e-tron - Typhoon Grey Metallic (graphite)
2021 Audi SQ5 - Ultra Blue Metallic (brighter - as the name implies)
2021 Audi S4 - Mythos Black Metallic

Bright blue is my favorite color for most cars, and Audi does killer blues. For my next car, if I can some how finagle an employee deal on a special order with Audi Exclusive paint it will be Nogaro Blue.

Agreed that Nardo Grey is getting a bit played out, but I think it looks great on Audis, primarily because it's only available on the special (RS) ones. Audi Did create a very similar called Quantum Grey that's available on the S cars. We had it on my wife's SQ5 with red seats, and I thought it looked killer.

Talking about colours, heres maybe a somewhat amusing story. When I bought my GT6 it had been handpainted with a brush by a previous owner in the original Tahiti blue. It was a terrible job, clearly no care taken as it was full of brush strokes. I had always wanted a gulf racing blue car (Le Mans GT40 era) so that was my criteria. The painter told me I had to come up with a paint code so I did some research, turns out the original "gulf racing blue" is actually a legit Triumph colour (powder blue) its not quite period correct for my GT6 but damn it looks good and thats about all that matters. Pretty much any car looks good in that colour but I am somewhat biased.

I do actually have some history of painting cars with brushes, the owner of the bike shop I used to work for back in NZ bought a cheap hack to use for shop promotion and shuttling duties except this fine example of Fix Or Repair Daily automotive memorabilia was in dire need of new paint. A mate of his duly procured (stole) some paint from the local docks (interislander ferry white) and we took the car out the back of the shop to give it a coat of paint with some brushes and a couple of rollers. No problem with this except next to us was one of the more renown collision repair companies in our city and their customer lounge had windows that overlooked the bike shop back yard. Apparently there was quite some consternation that day that their beloved motors were receiving paint jobs courtesy of brushes from a bunch of ill-kempt youths.

'89 Ford Escort(first car).......White
'89 Nissan Hardbody 4x4.......Dark Metallic Grey
'96 Ford Thunderbird........Red
'98 Jeep Cherokee.......Black
'04 Nissan Titan.......White
'15 Ram 1500 Big Horn.......Silver
'22 Ram 1500 Rebel.......White

Suz....since we got together.
'94 Jeep Wrangler......Dark Green
'98 Jeep Cherokee......Chilli Pepper Red
'00 Ford Mustang.......Blue
'04 Jeep Wrangler.......Red
'07 Nissan X-Terra......Brown'ish Metallic
'14 VW Jetta TDI.......Black
'15 VW Jetta Wagon TDI......Champagne
'15 VW Passat TDI.......White
'16 Mazda CX-5.......Titanium Mica
'15 Ram 1500 Big Horn.......Silver

I'm partial to White.....always have been. Same goes with my bikes.

Also not too keen on metallic colors.

The thought of going with some bold color sounds great in theory....but I'm afraid I'd burn out on it quickly.

Also I hate chrome on vehicles......at least on modern vehicles. Seems to be well done on cars from the 40's-50's. It seems nowadays you get chrome on the lower trims to make you feel like you are getting a higher trimmed vehicle.....and you have to pay more for color matched trim.

Slowly blacking out all the chrome (plastic) trim on our cars. The cars are all grey.

New Defenders are pretty sweet! Not $200k worth of sweet, but pretty nice!

the pictures don’t do it justice, it’s full custom, it has guide lines on the roof to the hood, a part of the hood is diamond plated to stand on it. The lights are just insane. It’s way more capable than the pavement princess you posted. You can’t really compare the two, they were built for two different purposes.

It's called silver. ;)

Since I live in the desert and park in the sun, I try to get vehicles in white if I can (and I like white on most vehicles). Since I always buy used, that is...not very often unless I change the color.

1965 Mustang - Wimbledon White with Guardsman Blue racing stripes (had it done).
1968 Mustang - Might be Guardsman Blue. Not sure. Will eventually be a Wimbledon White variation of the Terlingua Mustangs.
1972 Pinto - Lime Green Metallic. Paint code is 4F so I know it didn't see 'Nam.
1984 Mustang SVO - Black like nearly half of all SVOs produced.
1984 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe - That ugly metallic red.
1989 Mustang GT - Oxford White
1991 Honda Civic hatchback - Red.
1994 Toyota pickup - Ugly metallic red.
1996 Corolla - Dark metallic green.
2000 Tacoma PreRunner- Black Sand Metallic.
2000 Frontier - Red.
2004 Tacoma - Silver like every other car in the lot at work.
