Such a relatable comparison!!! Doesn’t everyone buy a Cessna? :D
Funny story, if you talk to my bosses wife then the plane she misses the most is the "little" Cessna they had. I rode with him for awhile when he had his Dassault Falcon (below dropping someone of in Pisa, Italy), now he's upgraded to a Gulfstream (I think its a G500)

Flying around the world in that thing was an eye-opening experience I will never forget!
Here we are passing over Mt. Fuji in Japan.

New car day... 2022 Subaru Crosstrek sport.
IMG_4271.jpeg

I'm not a car guy, never have been. Feels like my ass is gonna drag the ground in cars. I like big trucks but things in life have changed since the first of the year and I'm now driving about 750 miles a week. It just doesn't make sense to drive my ol bucket of bolts Duramax that much with fuel prices being what they are. Stop and go traffic in the truck ain't fun. The go part is fine but the stopping part ain't. I'll use the truck when I need it but the car will work 98% of the time.

I was looking at used ones but they were all selling for more than the price of new. I looked at pretty much every dealers website in SoCal and called a bunch but only Irvine Subaru had one unspoken for coming in. Paid a grand over sticker price but had a loyalty coupon from Subaru for 500 bucks to soften that blow. Wrote a company check for the down payment and figure the fuel savings alone will more than make the payments. Heck it was a horrendous 2.5 hour drive home thru crappy LA traffic and the little "Silver Bullet" still got 37.4 mpg. It'll be nice not to have to swipe the credit card twice just to fill up the tank.

Nice! My brother has the exact same model and color, he loves it!

I keep trying to tell myself I should order one of those instead of the Jeep, since you can get the Crosstrek in manual. Cheaper to buy, cheaper to operate, cheaper to maintain...

But I just don't think it will make me happy.

But that 37 mpg is about what my motorcycle gets

I totally get it. This one is the sport model with an extra 20hp and it doesn’t set the world on fire in the go department. The rubber band CVT is very weird to me but the car will probably last a million miles since the engine never spins over 3k on the tach. Hell it cruises under 2k. I’d buy what puts a smile on your face while you can still buy a gasoline powered vehicle in this state.

Just don’t service the car at Irvine Subaru.

their service manager tried to tell me that my brand new car wasn’t burning oil, but rather the oil was compressing.

I asked him how brakes worked, and reported the incident to Subie HQ.

The way they check for oil consumption is to fill the oil to the line, and send you out for 1000 miles. They then top it off again. If you burned less than a quart, they say the engine is in spec. The first time we did this, they showed .5 quarts. But it kept going so I made them try again. This time, I checked the dipstick before leaving. They had put an extra .7 quarts in. Needless to say the senior mechanic was just a little embarrassed.

I got my new engine, which has been fine for 100k. But no way am I ever stepping foot in that dealership again.

I guess I got a little triggered….

I have the same vehicle in a 2018. I've been very happy with it. Just coming up on 60K miles and never had a single issue. It's been up and down the roads to every TH in Hurricane multiple times as up to Whistler....and going back in July :D

Nice business write-off!

This is what I am trying to talk my better half into getting. EVERYONE I know who has one LOVES it!

Everyone here speeds up in the passing zones . With a fairly low-powered truck like mine, it's much like cycling; come up quick in their draft and try to have a big speed advantage by the time they realize what's going on. My other two cars don't need a plan; just do it. Well, stopping and steering may need a plan...

I was looking at used Crosstreks and Foresters several years ago and the power rating is what turned me off of the 'trek. I couldn't find a Forester that wasn't really expensive or in need of head gaskets either. My first choice was a Baja; same problems aside from being hard to find.

I believe the Crosstrek has a manual option? Subaru’s automatics are terrible. Worst part of our long-term experience with the Outback has been how long the powertrain takes to recognize that you put your foot down a few seconds ago, and now you’re in the opposite lane with a semi coming at you.

They come with CVTs these days (or a stick, if offered per model). I have not heard good things about Subaru CVTs. Seems like they need further refining. That's one of the reasons I chose my CRV. It has the best CVT available as far as working in unison with the motor.

The two lowest models of the Crosstrek have an optional manual, good luck funding one.

The CVT in my GF's Honda is real smooth though, I will say.

That said, I ordered a two door Jeep Rubicon with a manual. While I don't care about the fancy interior options (stereo, power windows, etc), I did want the axles, gearing, lockers, and Tcase. And of course, the required manual transmission. Hopefully I will see it by early July (before I drive across country). Scheduled for production two days ago, which doesn't mean a lot.

FCA recently updated their tracking system. Now you can do it online:

Yep, that's how I know I am "scheduled". I have been lurking on one of the Wrangler forums (which is where I learned about the 2% below invoice deal).

Super nervous. Never spent this kind of money, and never imagined I would. It'll be nice to be able to buy myself what I want and have a fresh start. No question marks of what maintenance was skipped, how hard was it abused, etc. And probably my last chance (personally) to buy a new internal combustion manual transmission vehicle.

A good call! Plus a keeper of a vehicle, not a commuter you're going to toss after using up.

Gonna go against the grain here......I think it's a terrible time to buy any vehicle if you don't HAVE to. Also fuel efficiency should be top of mind considering now and the future. My 2 cents
Nobody ever needs a car. It is always a want for everyone.

It will get better gas mileage and burn cheaper fuel than my 10,000 pound ambulance that I drive now. That is, when I am not commuting on my bicycle.

It is a "weekend car", more a toy than anything.

And I am getting it below invoice, only slightly more than I would have paid pre pandemic, so when is the right time to buy?

With a below MSRP in tandem with a good financing rate... why not!
Especially if you want ICE with a manual transmission... there are only going to be fewer of those going forward.
